In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and Sisters, I have good news! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! The good news this morning is the same as last weekand we will celebrate this same good news overthe next six Sundaysuntil Pentecost. During Easter we celebrate the good news that, through the resurrection of Christ, God has created a new heaven and new earth. We live in the Easter promisebut one look around and this promise may very well ring hollow and leave space for doubt. One look around the world and we see countries in the throes of war, people suffering from natural disasters, andcontinued incompetent government leadership. We are left wondering, Where is this newness God promised? The same question might linger when we examine our own lives. Despiteour confidence in Gods promise, westill have to work so hard to hold our families together, we still wait anxiously for a job offer, we still suffer from illness, orwe stillstrugglejust to make it through the day. This Easter promise might ring hollow for many of us, and that can lead to doubtkind of like Thomas in the gospel lesson this morning. Thomas is famous for doubting the resurrection for questioning whether it really happened and he gets a bad rap. But if you think about it, can we really fault him for doubting? The disciples continue to liveunder persecutionthey lock themselves in their rooms out of fear. They hope that the leaders dont show up to their doors, because if they do, they will likely be crucified, too, just like Jesus.

Who can blame Thomas for doubting? In fact, one theologian considers Thomas a realist. Rather than doubting, hes just being realistic about his situation. His world, like ours today, doesnt seem so new. Evidence is lacking. In his world, how can you blame him? Thomas doubts, sure, but by doing so, he is simply being a realist. He demands proof. He says to his friends,Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. A week later, Thomas has an encounter with Jesus, who offers Thomas proof. Thomas is left with a simple proclamation, My Lord, and my God! Sometimes doubt leads to deeper faith. Thomas proclaims his faith and Jesus responds with familiar words: Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. Jesus words might not be a rebuke of Thomas, as many of us have been taught. Rather, Jesus might simplybe blessing all those who believe without seeing. Jesus might be blessing His disciples, and all the Christian communities for generations to come. He might simply be blessing us. After all, in the face of everything we know to be true of the world and in our liveswe still believe without seeing. Just because we believe doesnt mean that we dont doubt. But instead of pushing aside our doubts, Id like to invite us to claim the ones we have. In many ways, these doubts are seeds of faith. In the benches you will find small pieces of paper. Id like you to take a few moments to think about what doubts you have in your lifefor this worldmaybe even about God, given this audacious promise of a new heaven and a new earth and write them down. So, go ahead, write them down Hold onto these doubts. Dont try to push them aside. Dont be ashamed of them. Write them down, take them home, think about them, roll them around a bit in your mind. And see what happens, when theyre out in the open, even if theyre only out in the open to you. Doubts, just like they did for Thomas, can lead to deeper faith. And when you doubt, remember that you are blessed, because even though you have not seen, you have believed. And thanks be to Godforthat. Amen.

Hermanos y hermanas, tengo buenas noticias! Cristo ha resucitado! l de verdad ha resucitado! La buena nueva esta maana es la misma que la semana pasada... y vamos a celebrar esta misma buena nueva en los prximos seis domingos... hasta Pentecosts. Durante la Pascua se celebra la buena noticia de que, a travs de la resurreccin de Cristo, Dios ha creado un nuevo cielo y una nueva tierra. Vivimos en la promesa de Pascua...pero uno mira alrededor y esta promesa puede bien sonar vaca y dejar un espacio para la duda. Uno mira alrededor del mundo y vemos a los pases en la agona de la guerra, las personas que sufren de desastres naturales, y contina el liderazgo del gobierno incompetente. Nos quedamos preguntndonos: "Dnde est la novedad que Dios prometi?" La misma pregunta podra persistir cuando examinamos nuestras propias vidas. A pesar de nuestra confianza en la promesa de Dios, todava tenemos que trabajar muy duro para mantener a nuestras familias unidas, todava esperamos ansiosos una oferta de trabajo, todava sufrimos de enfermedades, o luchamos... solo para pasar el da. Esta promesa de Pascua podra sonar vaca para muchos de nosotros, y puede dar lugar a la duda... un poco como Thomas en la leccin del Evangelio de esta maana. Thomas es famoso por poner en duda la resurreccin... por cuestionar si esto realmente sucedi... y l tiene una mala reputacin. Pero si se piensa en ello, podemos realmente culparlo por dudar? Los discpulos siguen viviendo bajo la persecucin... ellos se encierran en sus habitaciones por miedo. Tienen la esperanza de que los lderes no se presenten a sus puertas, porque si lo hacen, es probable que sean crucificados, tambin, como Jess. Quin puede culpar a Thomas por dudar? De hecho, un telogo considera a Thomas un realista. En vez de dudar, el solo est siendo realista acerca de su situacin. Su mundo, como el nuestro hoy, no parece tan nuevo. La evidencia es insuficiente. En su mundo, cmo puedes culparlo? Thomas duda, claro, pero al hacerlo, simplemente est siendo realista. l exige la prueba. l le dice a sus amigos: Si no veo las marcas de los clavos en sus manos y no meto mi dedo donde los clavos estaban y no meto mi mano en su costado, no creer."

Una semana ms tarde, Thomas tiene un encuentro con Jess, que ofrece pruebas a Thomas. Thomas se queda con una simple proclamacin: "Seor mo, y Dios mo!" A veces dudar lleva a una fe ms profunda. Thomas proclama su fe y Jess responde con palabras familiares: Porque t me has visto, has credo; bienaventurados los que no vieron, y creyeron. Las palabras de Jess podran no ser una reprensin deThomas, como a muchos de nosotros nos han enseado. Ms bien, Jess simplemente podra bendecir a todos los que creen sin haber visto. Jess puede estar bendiciendo a sus discpulos, y todas las comunidades cristianas para las generaciones venideras. l podra simplemente estar bendicindonos. Despus de todo, en la faz de todo lo que sabemos para ser verdad del mundo y en nuestras vidas...todava creemos sin ver. El hecho de que creamos queno quiere decir que no nos queda duda. Pero en lugar de echar a un lado las dudas, me gustara invitarlos a reclamar las que tenemos. En muchos aspectos, estas dudas son las semillas de la fe. En los bancos se encuentran trozos de papel. Me gustara tomar un momento para pensar acerca de las dudas que tengan en su vida... en este mundo... tal vez incluso sobre Dios, dada esta promesa audaz de un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva... y que las anoten. As que, adelante, anotarlas... Apyense enestas dudas. No traten de dejarlas a un lado. No seavergencen de ellas. Escrbanlas, llvenlas a casa, piensen en ellas, rodenlas un poco en su mente. Y a ver qu pasa, cuando salgan a la luz, incluso si slo estn fuera al aire libre para ti. Dudas, al igual que lo hizo Thomas, pueden conducir a una fe ms profunda. Y cuando dudes, recuerda que estas bendecido, porque a pesar de que no has visto, has credo. Y gracias a Dios por eso. Amen.
