Figure 1: Type MVTR relay withdrawn from case

Application
The type MVTR relay is a 3 phase single shot, delayed auto-reclosing design for use with all types of feeder protection where self-reset tripping is employed.

Description
The relay is housed in a standard MIDOS case. Connections between external equipment and the relay are made via a relay-mounted plug and a case mounted socket, the latter carrying a terminal block. Two solid state timer elements are employed, one for reclose timing, the second for reclaim timing. The closing pulse is terminated by a circuit breaker auxiliary contact. Typical diagrams of connections are shown in Figures 2 & 3. The type MVTR may be fitted with a cumulative operation counter if required.

MVTR 01 Auto-reclosing is initiated by tripping relay contact 86T2. This can only occur if contacts 52a2 and LAP are closed. Thus auto-reclose cannot take place if the circuit breaker is open. Contact LAP is usually fitted only to air blast breakers and is only closed when air pressure is high enough to allow the breaker to perform an autoreclose sequence. Upon initiation, relay P picks up during the tripping time of the circuit breaker. It is sealed in through its own contact P1 and the normally closed contacts of other, as yet un-energised relay elements. As relay P is energised, time delay element starts to time. This is the reclose timer and after its set time delay, contacts TD1 and TD3 close and TD2 opens. When contacts TD1 and TD3 close, the reclaim timer TL starts and relay LO is picked up, sealing in via contacts E1, LO 3 and TL1. If a synchronism check is required, two contacts on relay P can be used to

connect the two voltage signals to a check synchronising relay, the output contact, (SYN), of which will prevent the continuation of the auto-reclose sequence until it closes. Closing relay, C, is energised via contact SYN, TD3 and LO4 and these seal-in through contact C2, energising the circuit breaker coil and incrementing the closing counter if fitted. Relay P and the reclose timer TD reset when contact C1 opens. If dead line charging is required, the dead line contact replaces the check synchronising contact. If neither dead line charging nor check synchronising is required then a link replaces the contact. In this case, the auto-reclose sequence will continue regardless of line conditions. When the circuit breaker closes, auxiliary contact 52b1 opens and resets relay C. If the reclosure is successful, contact TL1 opens at the expiry of the set time of reclaim timer TL, and resets relay LO which in turn, resets the complete relay.

The reclaim timer starts when contact TD1 closes. A reset pulse is applied through contact TD2 or link LkB. If the link is closed, the reset pulse is applied at the same moment the timer is initiated and has no effect on the operation of the auto-reclose sequence. If the link is open, then contact TD2 opens as TD1 closes and the reset input to the timer is not energised. If the closing relay C fails to operate, for instance if the SYN contact does not close, then the reclaim timer will time out and either reset or lock out the relay, depending on the position of LkA. If relay C does operate, then contact C1 opens to de-energise P and TD, so that contact TD2 closes, energising the reset input and resetting the time to zero. The timer continues to time, as it is still energised through contact LO 3, but the full reclaim time will now elapse from the operation of relay C before the auto-reclose sequence ends by either resetting or locking out the relay.

If a second fault occurs within the reclaim time contact LO1 will be open and relay P will not pick up, preventing initiation of the reclose timer. Thus a reclosure sequence will not commence. In these circumstances the circuit breaker is open and, if link LkA is open, the relay will reset at the end of the reclaim time, because relay LO is de-energised when contact RL1 opens. If link LkA is closed then contact TL3 operates the hand-reset lock-out relay E and contact TL2 closes, maintaining relay LO energised while the lock-out relay E picks up. Auxiliary contacts Auxiliary contacts are provided to block instantaneous protection or to cancel Zone 1 extension on distance relays during the reclaim time. Autoreclose in progress and lockout indication contacts are also provided.

Auto-reclose lockout Auto-reclose lockout can be carried out where, for example, Zone 2 operation on a distance relay has occurred, by energising relay E on the first trip of the fault sequence, via contacts 96 and 86T3 as shown in Figure 2. Relay E is hand reset. MVTR 02 The operation of the MVTR 02 is identical to that of MVTR 01 except that the MVTR 02 version contains a self reset lockout relay which seals in through contact E4 when initiated by an auto-reclose cycle ending in lockout or by the auto-reclose lockout contact closing (see Figure 3). Link LkA is always closed and is not adjustable. If the dc supply to terminal 16 is removed, for example by the supervisory reset contact opening or the circuit breaker being closed manually, the relay E will reset from a lockout state.

Maintenance alarm and lockout Terminals are provided for interconnection with a maintenance alarm and lockout relay type MVTC 01 as described in Publication R 6016. Contact C4 sends a pulse to the counter stepping circuit. Terminal 21 provides a dc supply to the alarm and lockout relays in the MVTC, which is interrupted by contact LO 2, which opens before relay C can operate and remains open to the end of the reclaim time. Hence neither the alarm nor lockout relays can operate until the end of an auto-reclose sequence. The auto-reclose lockout signal from the MVTC operates the relay E in the MVTR via terminal 18.
