Assistive Technology Implementation Plan

The first step to helping Linda fulfill her dream of becoming a digital artist/painter is to find her robust digital art software. By robust, I mean software that can be used to create both simple and complex images, one that has multiple levels and can be used in a variety of ways. Software with a simple enough interface that as a beginning artist Linda will be successful, yet at the same time software that will be able to continue meet Lindas needs that as she expands her artistic ability. Logotrons Revelation Natural Art (RNA) software looks like a perfect solution. Advertised as quite the most natural way to paint on the computer RNA allows students to create beautiful digital art from day one. Students start painting and drawing with an initial simple interface that can be learned in one session. Upon mastery of the simple interface they can choose to go up a level to the intermediate interface, and from there they can move on thru two levels of advanced interfaces. http://www.r-e-m.co.uk/logo/?comp=rna The next step toward helping Linda successfully achieve her artist goals is to provide her with a tool for of interfacing with the computer that she can use given her physical limitations. The RNA software does offer keyboard short-cuts but there are quite a lot of them, and really using them to navigate the entire computer experience does not look fun. However, the software is designed to be used with a mouse or some other form of pointer, and so giving Linda a trackball to control her input seems a relatively simple accommodation. If we were to go this route I would suggest something like this big track ball by Achievement Products. http://www.achievementproducts.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?product=904&category=123&CategorySearch=&Brand=&Pric e Still with limited use of her upper extremities, even a track ball might prove to be frustrating for Linda when trying to draw and paint. However, the world of AT has a solution even for this: eye tracking devices such as the Tobii PCEye. As they tell us on th Tobii PCEye site eye control is the most effective way to indicate a position on the screen, just like you do with a mouse, simply because the eyes are very fast, rarely get tired and are always looking at what you want to click on anyway. Voice control, switches or a keyboard on the other hand are often effective to initiate a command. If you are able to use another input method, a combination may be most effective. If you are not, the Tobii PCEye offers full access to your computer, using only your eyes Since Linda does have some control of her upper extremities I suggest that we combine the technologies and give her a big track ball for inputing simple one click commands, and a TobiiPCEye device to allow her to use her eyes to control her pencils and paintbrushes within the RNA program.
