Assistive Technology Implementation Plan

Joel XXXX is a Regional Center Client who is enrolled in the Right to Work Program, a disability rights program that assists adult Regional Center clients in finding and maintaining employment in the community. PhotoLab is a privately owned business which has contracted with the Right to Work Program to provide training and jobs for adults with developmental delays. As part of the contract PhotoLab employs Right to Work clients to work alongside their traditional employees, and the PhotoLab Manager is required to meet with the AT consultant and learn how to provide support for the successful inclusion of the Right To Work Client. Joels photography interest and skills in photography make PhotoLab a good fit for him. However, his weak written language skills are interfering with his ability to successfully complete his tasks as a PhotoLab employee in two areas: 1) His ability to successfully read the directions to use the photo processing equipment. 2) His ability to leave notes specifying details on customers orders. The AT Consultant suggests that both problems can be solved by using a simple assistive technology device called a pulse smart pen. The problem of Joel not being able to read the complex directions of the photo processing equipment can be solved by using the smart pen to make a visual guide that has the recorded directions to the equipment attached as audio files, which are stored in the pen. The visual guide could be as simples as the numbers 1-10, with the appropriate directions to each step attached to the numbers. When using the equipment Joel can hold the visual guide and tap each number in order with the pen to hear the directions for each step of the process. The problem of Joel not being able to leave legible notes can also be solved with the use of the smart pen. Joel can take notes for the orders using the smart pen, creating an audio file of the specific details that is attached to the notes. He can then download the notes and the audio file by simply placing the pen in the recharging cradle. Then his co-workers can access the notes and the attached audio files on the computer.
