Thomas Raat - An Inquiry Into Meaning And Truth And More... Onomatopee 2012 ISBN 9789078454984 Acqn 22324 Pb 20x30cm 40pp 27col ills 21.50 Reminiscent of the cover designs of popular academic and similarly intellectually oriented paperbacks and periodicals that appeared between the 1940s and '70s, Dutch artist Thomas Raat's work repurposes this bold, colourful and abstract imagery, blurring the lines between art and design. According to the accompanying critical essay by John C. Welchman, Raat operates at the technical interface between abstract painting and visual construction. Implicit in his work is a critique on the industrial appropriation of abstract forms the fervent anti-pictorial agenda of the time as a more or less empty decorative language. The artworks therefore question both signifiers and intentions.

It portrays surfing in a broad context, delving into the water sports relation with art, photography, science, philosophy and poetry. Because its singular horizon sometimes feels limiting, it chronicles the many discoveries to be made by looking further afield: inspiring places, musings, images, or even new concepts that have to do with the idea of surfing.

With his own subjective imagery and pictorial language, illustrator and artist Luca Schenardi links human impact to the decline of nature. Using birds as an indication of our materialistic way of life, the book demystifies and clearly demonstrates the present condition in Western Europe and beyond. Schenardis artistic expression is characterised by biting social criticism and cynicism mixed with offbeat humour and irony, yet avoids the prevalent cultural pessimism.

Jackson Slattery Surfaces Erm Books 2012 ISBN 9780975196298 Acqn 22339 Hb 17x23cm 32pp 28col ills 19 Comprising recent and never-before-seen works, 'Surfaces' counterpoints the romantic against the absurd and the evocative against the surreal, forging a thread of potential narrative, formal and symbolic strands and motifs. Tracing the Melbourne-born artist's exploration of photorealist watercolour, the book muses on both the physical and allegorical implications of its title. Slattery's paintings are striking for both their technical acumen and elusive subject matter. The medium of watercolour may be one of the most inflexible, yet here he proves it to be malleable and enigmatic in equal measure.

Riley Payne - Mad Deep Thoughts Perimeter Editions 2012 ISBN 9780987353009 Acqn 22340 Pb 17x24cm 28pp 31col ills 19 Tracing the Melbourne artists photorealist graphite renderings of fruit, foliage and figure, Mad Deep Thoughts captures Riley Paynes technical acumen and offbeat humour to equal effect. Art history and the absurd are juxtaposed in drawings that might be considered in terms of collage a neon hot dog, for instance, perched in front of Antonio Canovas Sleeping Nymph. The works are reflections on our hilarious and slightly disturbing state of affairs as much as they are flippant one-liners and gags. Payne captures the vaguely biographical images, texts and details we not only release, but also actively flaunt, in the increasingly pervasive public domain.

Made In Mind - Myths And Realities Of The Contemporary Artists Art And Theory Publishing 2013 ISBN 9789197998567 Acqn 22355 Pb 17x23cm 304pp 60ills 50col 37 Genius, bohemian, social rebel, moral provocateur, charismatic visionary... The artist has always been surrounded by enchanting myths. Today, in a globalized world, images and information are easily visible and accessible, which in part has undermined and transformed the existing notions of the artist and the public. This new relationship between the artist and the art market is especially interesting and complex as it oscillates between celebration and indifference, affirmation and refusal of the market and its opportunities. Briefly but inspiringly, Marta Gnyp analyses the fascinating phenomena that has influenced and shaped the context in which contemporary artists produce their artworks and present them to the public and collectors. In exclusive and personal interviews several important, international contemporary artists reflect on the idea of being an artist today, talking about their private motivations and ambitions, about art in general and their art in particular, and about their experiences of the ungraspable transformations that are shaping the world today. Participating artists: Ai Weiwei, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Matthew Day Jackson, Elmgreen & Dragset, Valrie Favre, Urs Fischer, Subodh Gupta, Terence Koh, Michael Kunze, Gabriel Lester, Eoin McHugh, Boris Mikhailov, Matthew Monahan, Robin Rhode, Andrei Roiter, Willem de Rooij, Stefan Ruitenbeek, Thomas Schtte, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Ulay, Artur Zmijewski and the scientist Robbert Dijkgraaf.

Serge Onnen - The Lost cent Onomatopee 2013 ISBN 9789078454892 Acqn 22305 Pb 14x20cm 368pp 174col ills 21.50 The cent is the least popular coin in any monetary world, a valueless being that circulates with difficulty. Its economic worthlessness liberates it from responsibility. This collection of ink drawings by Amsterdam-based artist Serge Onnen is penetrated literally by the one-cent coin glued to its cover. A coin-sized hole is bored through the books pages, becoming the focal point of each artwork, a missing void. With this gesture, Onnen offers commentary on currency, its unstable value and meaning, and how something such as a cent is filtered by todays conventions. Included are a short story by Charles Baudelaire, The Counterfeited Coin, and a conversation with Olav Velthuis.

Almost Nothing With Luc Ferrari Errant Bodies 2012 ISBN 9780982743911 Acqn 20958 Hb 15x23cm 174pp 8ills 17 Text by Jacqueline Caux, Luc Ferrari. Interview by Jacqueline Caux, Franois Delalande, Daniel Terrugi, Evelyne Gayou. Translated by Jrme Hansen. Perhaps the only postwar classical composer to invest avant-garde music with overt eroticism, Luc Ferrari (19292005) was one of Frances leading composers of the twentieth century, relentlessly experimental while always preserving his keen sense of humor. Ferrari was a firstgeneration exponent of musique concrte, and made brilliant use of field recordings to develop sensual, proto-ambient narrative that he termed anecdotal music or cinema for the ear. Perhaps the most notorious instance of this approach was Danses Organiques (1973), for which Ferrari recorded the meeting and sexual encounter of two young women, cut with other ambient and music sound. In his final decades Ferrari was championed by David Grubbs (of Gastr del Sol), who brought his music to a postrock audience. Almost Nothing is the first publication on this composer. It alternates Jacqueline Cauxs interviews with 14 imaginary autobiographies by the composer, offering a lively account of new musics most revolutionary era.
