Marks Define the term Gear Train & explain any two types of gear train by supporting with clean sketches [05] [11]

(a)

(b) An Epicyclic gear train consists of a sun wheel S, a stationary internal gear E and three identical planet wheels P carried on a starship planet carrier C. The size of different toothed wheels is such that the planet carrier C rotates at 1/5th of the speed of the sun wheel S. The minimum number of teeth on any wheel is 16. The driving torque on the sun wheel is 100 N-m. Determine: 01. Number of teeth on different wheels of the train, and 02. Torque necessary to keep the internal gear stationary. 02 (a) Define the terms: Fluctuation of Energy, Co-efficient of fluctuation of Energy & Co-efficient of fluctuation of Speed (b) The Turning Moment Curve for an engine is represented by the equation, T = (20,000 + 9500 Sin2 5700 Cos 2) N-m, where is the angle moved by the crank from inner dead center. If the resisting torque is constant, find: 01. Power developed by the Engine, 02. Moment of Inertia of the fly wheel in kg-m, if the total fluctuation of speed is not the exceed 1% of mean speed which is 180 rpm. 03 (a) Why helical gears are preferred over spur gears? Also define the terms: helix angle and normal and transverse circular pitch. (b) In order to reduce the noise in gear drive, two 08 pitch spur gears with 20 and 40 teeth are to be replaced with helical gears. The new set of gears must have the same velocity ratio and the distance. Specify two helical gears which will be formed on a hob to accomplish the task. 04 (a) Define the terms: Pressure angle, Pitch circle diameter and Module. (b) A pair of gears is powered by an electric motor and is used to drive the spindle of lathe at 200 r.p.m. The 1 h.p. motor will be replaced by more efficient but higher speed motor, rated at 600 r.p.m. To accomplish this alteration, a new set of gears must be selected that will maintain the spindle speed at 200 r.p.m. However, the gears are mounted in an elaborated housing that cannot be modified; therefore, the centre distance between the gears must remain 7.5 inches. Specify a set of gears that can be used.

A Cam operating a knife-edged follower has the following data: a) Follower moves outward through 50mm during 60 of cam rotation b) Follower dwells for the next 45 c) Follower returns to its original position during next 90. d) Follower dwells for the rest of the rotation. The displacement of the follower is to take place with simple harmonic motion during both the inward & outward strokes. The least radius of the cam is 50mm. Draw the profile of the cam when the axis of the follower passes through the axis of the cam. If the cam rotates at 300rpm, determine maximum velocity and acceleration of the follower during outward & the return strokes. The shaft carries four masses A, B, C and D of magnitude 200kg, 300kg, 400kg and 200kg respectively and revolving at radii 80mm, 70mm, 60mm and 80mm in planes measured from A at 300mm, 400mm and 700mm. The angles between the cranks measured anticlockwise are A to B is 45, B to C is 70 and C to D is 120. The balancing masses are to be placed in X and Y planes. The distance between A and X is 100mm, X and Y is 400mm and between Y and D is 200mm. If the balancing masses revolve at a radius of 100mm, find their magnitudes and angular positions. In a four cylinder vertical engine has cranks 150mm long. The planes of rotation of the first, second and fourth cranks are 400mm, 200mm and 200mm respectively from the third crank and their reciprocating masses are 50kg, 60kg and 50kg respectively. Find the mass of the reciprocating parts for the third cylinder and the relative angular positions of the cranks in order that the engine may be in complete balance. Write short notes on the following: (i) Fly wheel as an Energy Storage Device. (ii) Epicyclic gear train with Bevel gears. (iii) Follower and its classification. ----------------- THE END ------------------
