    The Sumerians developed one of the world's first writing systems called cuneiform. They established independent city-states and traded extensively by land and sea. Sumerian society was governed by a priestly class and citizens devotedly worshipped gods like Anu, Bel, Sin, and Shamash. Later, the Akkadians conquered the region under King Sargon and centralized political power. The Babylonians then rose to power under King Hammurabi, who is renowned for establishing one of history's first legal codes. A series of powerful empires like the Assyrians and Persians later dominated Mesopotamia.

    SUMERIAN (SOME)

    The Sumerian society was agriculturally based and they had the foundations for a written language called cuneiform.

    CUNEIFORM WRITING

    SUMERIAN

    Because of this the Sumerians developed extensive trade and commerce both by land and sea. They were not rich in natural resources like the Egyptians who did not leave Egypt.

    Because of this trade orientation they created items to meet their needs. Cylinder Seals were used to create a packing slip. Seals can be either flat (a stamp) or round a Cylinder Seal.

    SUMERIAN
    Sumerians built substantial city-states, which were self ruled through a limited democracy. The Sumerian society was governed by a priestly class. Sumerian citizens were among the most devoutly religious anywhere in the ancient world. They were polytheistic they worshipped many gods, each city-state placed a greater emphasis one or another of the gods.

    Anu god of the sky Bel creator and ruler of earth Sin the moon god Shamash the sun god Ishtar goddess of love, fertility and later associated with battle.

    It takes its nickname from a fragment with a gruesome scene of vultures carrying off the severed heads and arms of the defeated enemy soldiers.

    AKKADIAN (APPLES)
    The Sumerians were basically peaceful, but there were belligerent people from a neighboring city-state known as the Akkadians. The Akkadian period began when the city-state of Akkad came under the rule of Sargon. Sargon wanted power and he introduced the idea of royal power. His son and grandson followed in his food steps. His grandson, Naram-Sin was the bossiest of all!

    Large- 66 At the top, he is greeted by two gods, presumably Shamash, the sun god and either Sin, god of the moon or Ishtar, now exercising her roll as goddess of war and battle. Naram-Sin is the largest person on the work, this is known as Hierarchy of scale largest person is most important

    BABYLONIAN (BANANAS)
    Babylon was just one of many similar towns with a gene pool mix of old Sumerian stock. They remained completely autonomous until the rise of an uncommonly good administrator, Hammurabi.

    STELE OF HAMMURABI

    Hammurabi was Babylons most powerful king. He is best know today for his law code. The code is inscribed in cuneiform on the stele

    ASSYRIAN (AND)

    Assyrians were warriors and very powerful. The ruler was Sargon II.

    LAMASSU

    LAMASSU

    This was a guardian for palaces or citadels. It is a winged human-headed bull. The purpose was to show power of the king and frighten enemies.

    PERSIAN (PEACHES)
    The Persians conquered the Babylonians The Persian Empire was the largest in the world. The Persians are now modern day Iran.
