ALOR STAR: Eleven pupils were injured when a schoolbus they were travelling in collided with an express bus

at Km16.8 of the North-South Highway near Jitra here today.

1/4 The bus driver, Mohd Borhan Shariat, 42, suffered serious bodily injuries, including broken ribs. He was ferrying 40 pupils from Sekolah Rendah Al-Azhar, a private Islamic religious school here, when the accident occurred at 3.30pm. He is in stable condition at Jitra Hospital. Borhan was about to enter the highway when the front right side of his school bus grazed the left front side of the Shah Alam-bound express bus. The driver of the express bus and all its 44 passengers were unhurt. One of the pupils, Zihni Ilman Zairi, nine, was seriously injured with broken hands and legs after he was thrown out of the bus on impact. He is being treated at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar, Perlis. Ten other pupils who were also injured received outpatient treatment at Jitra Hospital. One of the pupils, Muhammad Aisar Hamzah, 11, said he was asleep when the collision took place. "I was suddenly awakened by cries of pain and for help. "I then realised that something had happened," said the Standard Five pupil who was seated at the back of the bus at the time of the accident. District Fire Department chief Hasbullah Md Isa said four men in one engine arrived at the scene at 4.17pm. "We spent about 30 minutes using the jaws of life to remove Mohd Borhan who was pinned under the steering wheel," he said.

IPOH: A student was killed after the motorcycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a car in Gerik, about 100 km north of here, last night, police said today.
Perak Traffic Police chief DSP Mohamad Roy Suhaimi said Mohamad Asnawi Ahmad, 16, died while being rushed to Gerik Hospital following the accident at Batu 6, Kampung Bandariang, at 9.15 pm. The student was riding to his home in the village when the accident happened, he said, adding that the driver of the car was unhurt. -BERNAMA

Four abandon car after accident

BESUT: Four men abandoned a luxury car and fled after the vehicle was involved in an accident here early today, police said.
Besut Police chief Supt Kamaruddin Zakaria said they left the car at Km0.5 of Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Jerteh at Kampung Mak Sara after the accident at 5.30 am. The car crashed onto a lamp post on the road divider when it tried to overtake another vehicle and landed in a ditch beside the opposite lane, he said. Kamaruddin said police found several metal cutters and machetes in the car. He appealed to eye-witnesses of the accident to contact the police. -- BERNAMA
