Presidents Message

Time is flying by. It is March already, and we will be getting our rolling stock cleaned and polished for the Memorial Day parade in Parsippany. All are welcome to join, either riding in a truck or walking and handing out our show flyers for June 9th. I'm glad to see a response to our request for more email address. Of the $15.00 dues we spend over $5.00 a year on postage alone. Again, I thank all who have updated their info. Don't forget, this month we are doing the mailing for the Automatic Switch show. The response I have gotten with the new flyers is great. I'm out already and need more. I'm

asking all our members to post 5 flyers in locations that we haven't been in before. This can bring an additional 1,000 people to our show. I know that each year my wife and I start looking at the show calendar and choosing which we will be attending. We have additional events that we hear about like the Parsippany Rescue and Recovery Show and Pine Island. Both shows last year were the first time large trucks were there, and they want us back. Enjoy old friends, make new friends, and enjoy the hobby! Arnold Block President

Report of the February 28, 2013 Business Meeting

President Arnold Block opened the 294th meeting of the Metro Jersey chapter on Thursday, February 28th at 7:48 p.m., with a salute to the American flag followed by a moment of silence for our troops and deceased friends. Minutes of the January 2013 meeting were approved as distributed in Stack Talk. Treasurers report: Jan. 31 bank balance $5462.09 Income 50/50 $57.00 & Dues $465.00 Expenses Years Rent for meetings $800.00 thru Jan 2014. ATHS brick from the club $500.00, show flyers $887.00 Feb 28 balance $3793.09

Bill reported the trailer has been registered and Tom has the NJ Certificate. The group made introductions around the room as we had new attendees. Presidents report: Arnold explained that when a spouse passes, the club sends a donation to the Zoe James Library in that persons honor. He explained Bill Wagner lost his partner of several years, who was very active in the club (but was not Bills wife), so the hat was passed and $150.00 was collected. Later the winner of the 50/50 added $22.00 to the hat and Bill rounded the balance up to $200.00 even. A $150.00 brick for the sign will be purchased with her name and the remaining balance donated to the library. Bill thanked the group for their support. Arnold asked all members to vote in the national ATHS election. The ballot is with the latest Wheels of Time. Arnold discussed the use of email again. Some members expressed feeling guilty about this being continually brought up. Again it was explained that only if you can receive emails to please allow us to send your copy of Stacktalk that way. We are not asking others to get a computer and mess up their lives like the rest of us. A get well card was circulated for Ray Griffith. Flyers for the show were made available, and Arnold asked for help in getting them distributed around the area. Gas pumps, convenience stores, etc. The Parsippany parade is Memorial Day, May 27th. Arnold needs head count and names of people planning to take a vehicle. Stan Chciuk discussed a possible convoy in September to Landisville NJ at Battleline Towing where they have a large towing demonstration while towers get recertified. It is usually the weekend after Labor Day. More information will follow in later months. Arnold is attempting to get the information on the Pine Island show. We would not convoy, but instead go as individuals to this show. The Parsippany Rescue and Recovery show at Lanidex Plaza over the summer is also waiting details.

Report of the February 28, 2013 Business Meeting

(Continued from Page 2)

Arnold would like to increase our club membership 10 percent this year and get over 200 vehicles at our June 9th show. Tim Day reported membership is at 206 as of February 28th. Show communication: Tom has sent press releases to several spots. We are now going to get coverage in the Our Town Morris County edition, a great local paper. Several people also noted the new county music station on 94.7 FM and asked Tom to see if he could contact them. The April meeting will be at Beyers Bros. Ford on Ridgedale Ave. We can bring antique vehicles, and a guest speaker from Ford will be there. (April 25, 2013.) Shirt order was discussed; Arnold is looking for shirt sizes of our members. It didnt look like many smalls would be needed. They will sell for around $17.00 It was suggested we have a meeting sign-in sheet. Arnold will make one up by the next meeting. We are looking for additional vendors for the truck show, either as a vendor or flea market space. The 50/50 was won by John Suckoe and was donated to the Doris Fund. Thanks John. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM so we could look at the models and pictures. Minutes submitted by Bill Wagner, Secretary

Winter Board Meeting Notes:

George Petrask attended the winter board meeting March 1 through March 3 in Kansas City, MO. Aside from lots of snow, George reported that the meeting was productive. Here are some items that were discussed: Goodie bags have been discontinued for now; they will be revisited at a later date. Future Conventions: 2013 Yakima, Washington 2014 Springfield, Missouri 2015 York Fairgrounds, York, Pennsylvania 2016 Salem, Oregon 2017 Central U.S. 2018 East Coast Brick sales for the landscaping project for under and around the restored CF Motor Cargo sign are just for that; they are not for building maintenance and not for salaries. Each chapter is urged to purchase a brick in their chapters name. Individual bricks can be purchased for a family, loved one, lost pet, or old truck that was sold (and that you wish you still had). The recent dues increase was to keep up with inflation. Back in 1971, dues were $15.00. In 2013, dues are $45.00, which is equal to $15.00 in 1971. It was brought to the boards attention that several members have been having trouble getting insurance on additional trucks. The board would like to hear from any member who has had trouble, find out who the company was, what year and make the truck was, and what state the member is from. Including your name is optional. Please contact the insurance chairman, George Petrask, at oldirongarage@embarqmail.com.

The photos above were taken by George Petrask. This sign stood on I-83 in York, Pennsylvania for years, and now, after its restoration, stands in front of Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. The photos show each side of the sign. -4-

Over the Road

By Dave Read Chapter Historian
The picture that you see above is of a brand spanking new 1958 Diamond T model 923B Diesel truck pulling for Beverage Transport of York, Pennsylvania. It is a very special occasion when a truck driver goes to work for the first day in a brand new truck. Inside the cab the smells of new paint, leather, and rubber are exciting enough, but crawling behind the wheel provides sights that are even better. Then the sounds of starting up the brand new Cummins Diesel engine are even more so. Finding out how smoothly the truck rides, and runs and shifts are all thrills of the new experience. As the truck is driven for the first week or two, the smells of the new paint burning off of the engine and exhaust system are a pleasant reminder of the change from an old truck to a new one. I took this picture on Route 1 in Newark, just across from the airport in 1958. The lucky driver of the new Diamond T had just put on a load of Budweiser beer at the AnheuserBusch brewery, and had pulled it out onto US 1, and parked it in front of the old southbound Scotty's Truck Stop and gone in for a cup of coffee. The truck stop is directly behind me. The Diamond T has the front axle set back, which provides the attractive long nose snoot that we liked so much, and under that hood is a recently introduced Cummins NH-180, putting out 180 HP at 2100 RPM's, backed up by a 10 speed Fuller Roadranger Transmission, that provided ten speeds of single stick shifting. The inside of the cab was two-tone green with a dark metallic green steering wheel, and I can assure you that the sight out over that long nose was an exciting one. I would consider this the prettiest truck picture I ever took except for the damn lightpole right in the middle of it. But I'd definitely vote for the Diamond T in any beauty contest. -5-
