PUPILS from across the area have been doing their bit to brighten up Westminster Park. They have planted hundreds of trees as part of the park’s redevelopment. We’ve got a double page of pictures as well as more news from Westminster Park itself. In the Queen’s Park High School feature, students have been suggesting ways to improve learning at the school. There’s also a recipe courtesy of the Grosvenor Pulford, an appeal for memories of West Cheshire College and much more. We hope you enjoy the magazine and if you want us to publicise your event or if you have a story to tell, please let us know.

Pupils dig deep as park improvements take shape

CHILDREN from local schools in Overleigh and Westminster have been busy planting trees in Westminster Park.

With the help of Friends of Westminster Park and local councillors, over 35 children from six schools planted whips in an area in the park dedicated to encourage wildlife.

School children from Belgrave Primary, Lache Primary, Overleigh St Mary’s Primary, St Clare’s Primary, Queen’s Park High School, and Chester Catholic High School participated

The planting works undertaken kick starts the planting of over 1,000 trees in the park. The planting consists of native trees to encourage more wildlife and a fruit and nut orchard.

The works are part of Westminster Park Phase Two and are anticipated to be

completed this spring. Improvements include

a new BMX track, play facilities for juniors

and teenagers, a new Multi Use Games Area, footpaths, seats and bins, sculptural earth mounding and associated planting works.

Successful funding from The Big Lottery Fund and WREN Waste Recycling Environmental has enabled the £170K project to happen.

The first completed features are the new BMX track and Multi Use Games area. The BMX track is the first to be built in Chester and was designed with the help of local young BMXers.

The track provides a challenging facility that caters for both experienced and novice riders.

The plans for the park’s improvement were drawn up with input from residents and children from local primary and secondary schools. The proposals are a continuation on from the Phase One Toddlers play area which was completed two years ago.

Cllr Richard Short said: “It was wonderful to see young children working with spades to plant the trees that will form a natural backdrop to the splendid facilities in the park. I am sure they will have “ownership” of those trees and care for them over many years.”

QUEEN’S PARK HIGH

Students give the teachers

QUEEN’S Park High students have given ttheir view on ways to improve learning at the school. The ‘Students as Researchers’ programme started last year when a group of ten students

aged 13-16 took part in training to prepare them for visiting lessons to get a ‘student eye view’ of the effectiveness of lessons. Jeremy Taylor, chief executive of Cheshire County Council, visited the school recently, just weeks before the new single tier local

authorities take over.

Mr Taylor toured the

school’s recently refurbished areas, including the Library Learning Centre with its state of the art e-learning facilities opened by the Duke of Westminster last July. He also sat in on a presentation by students who had been researching aspects of learning at the school. Mr Taylor heard the feedback from the students whose suggestions to improve learning included:

The BMX track is attracting a large number of cyclists at the weekends and half term. The general verdict is that it is cool!

The Council’s planning application for a 5m high sculpture has been withdrawn following universal objections about the height and possible invasion of privacy to nearby gardens.

Following discussions with the city council the Friends of Westminster Park have modified their plans for cricket equipment for the Park. They are now going to have an all weather strip on the square that would double up as nets. The sight screens will be put on hold for the time being.

l THE Grosvenor Shopping Centre Chester is unveiling

a fresh new look to shoppers this spring.

The centre formerly known as The Mall Chester is being rebranded and relaunched. Changes are already taking place following the purchase of the centre by The Carlyle Group and Bride Hall holdings in July of last year. General manager Julie Webb said: “Customers were

enthusiastic to see the reintroduction of the Grosvenor brand and restore a valued local link”, she said. The rebrand will see the introduction of a new centre

logo and an upgrading of imagery and colour throughout the centre, while the rebranding exercise will be marked by a series of major themed events, competitions and giveaways throughout the Spring and Summer. Also receiving attention will be the shopping centre car park, previously owned by NCP; this too will receive

a makeover and will provide customers with a lighter, brighter, parking environment.

HANDBRIDGE FLOWER CLUB The group meets in St Mary’s Parish Hall on Thursday 16th April at 2pm when Michael Kemp, from Chirk, will give a demonstration entitled “The Wonder of Amateur Dramatics”. New members welcome. Visitors £4.

ARE yOUR LEGS THE SAME LENGTH?

By PETER COLHOUN

WHAT a bizarre question to ask this month! How would you answer this question? You may already know (or have a feeling) that one leg is longer than the other. Perhaps you feel that your legs are the same length, but in this article, we’re discussing a fairly common (and sometimes subtle) presentation known as a “leg length differential.”

Establishing a leg length differential

Many podiatrists - and other health professionals - have their own preferred methods of assessing leg length in patients. Some may look at their patient sitting upright and see if their heels and/or inner ankles line up equally. My preferred method is to first use a tape measure and compare the Pelvic (ASIS) to inner ankle lengths of both legs. I then measure from the sternum (breastbone) to the inner ankles on both limbs. I then verify this by laser measurement with the patient standing up.

The two sets of measurements help establish an important factor: A leg length difference from the Pelvis to the Ankle may not actually be indicative of a real or anatomical leg length variance. It may be that the leg length differential is ‘functional’ (e.g., that the pelvis is misaligned - especially if the measurements from the sternum are equal.

How do we treat a functional leg length difference?

The simple answer is that this depends on what is causing one leg to function as a longer limb. If - using the above example - it is because of a pelvic issue, then this needs to addressed first. If it is because one leg has started to ‘bow’ because of knee weakness, then that too would need topical treatment initially. A podiatric biomechanical assessment would establish what functional problems exist, and is always a great starting point in the leg length puzzle!

What’s the problem with having a longer leg?

puzzle! What’s the problem with having a longer leg? Let’s illustrate this with standing up or

Let’s illustrate this with standing up or weight bearing. If one leg is longer, the body will try to compensate for its length, typically by flattening the foot to make it a bit shorter. It may make that foot or rearfoot over-pronate (as defined in my last article). Furthermore, the shorter leg will laterally overload and raise the arch to try and compensate for the shortness.

Once you start walking with one foot pronating. and the other supinating, you cause torsion problems at the ankles, knees and reinforce functional pelvic issues which generates improper shock absorption through the ilium and sacrum, potentially causing sacroiliac joint inflammation and lower back pain.

How can I treat this?

In most cases, one of several different designs of ‘heel lifts’ can be provided. More commonly though, a heel raise can be incorporated into a bespoke orthotic insole that fits inside your footwear and corrects other foot issues. Whatever the treatment, remember not to self- diagnose! Consult a podiatrist who works with biomechanics so that your leg length can be accurately established and the right size and type of orthotic can be recommended.

Would you like a Podiatric Assessment? You can speak to Peter on 07880 702475 or 661148. Peter Colhoun, IS A HPC Registered Podiatrist.

retail outlets, warehouses and industrial premises. Upward rent reviews are a common feature of commercial property leases, providing the potential for growing income levels above deposit returns. Although recent times have shown us that the value of commercial property can fall, overall, commercial property investment also has a track record for often providing returns when other investment types may not be doing so, which can make it an important part of a diversified income strategy.

Another option is ‘fixed interest’ investments, also known as bonds or gilts, which are loans made by investors to companies or governments. The level of interest the investor receives depends on the creditworthiness of the borrowing company or government. The more risky the borrower is, the higher the interest paid out to investors, to reflect the amount of risk the investor is making with their capital.

By carefully combining the options available, people can create investments that maximise income potential, while at the same time controlling risk to capital and providing the opportunity for inflation-beating returns.

But choosing the right blend of income- generating investments is not easy, which is why many people leave this to professional wealth management specialists in order to find the right income solutions. This provides unrivalled access to investment know-how and the opportunity to invest across a range of different investment firms, with the peace of mind of knowing that money is being well looked after.

INVESTING FOR INCOME – THE CHOICES

By Simon Dangar

PEOPLE investing for income have a number of options when considering how best to make their money work harder for them. And with bank interest rates at historically low levels, those relying on interest from savings to supplement their income are increasingly recognising the need to seek out the alternatives to make up the shortfall.

Despite current stock market volatility, equities (shares) still represent the pick of the bunch when looking for long-term income-generating potential.

Investing in asset classes like property, bonds and cash all help in the drive to generate income, but history shows that equities outperform all comers over the longer term. This is due to a number of factors; the trend for dividends from company shares to increase over time, the potential for capital gains in the value of those shares and the significant boost to those gains that can be achieved by reinvesting dividends until the income tap needs to be turned on. This combination of rising income and capital growth over the medium to long-term is vital to help fight off the main threat to income – inflation.

But while in the main share values have increased over time, nothing can ever be guaranteed. So it is always essential to invest carefully and the temptation to put all the eggs in one basket should be avoided by holding a spread of investments geared towards generating income. And with people living longer, creating sufficient income for retirement to ensure you don’t ‘outlive your money’ has become a greater requirement than ever before.

So what are the options when investing for income, other than equities? One is commercial property, which offers a real opportunity to achieve capital growth and a rising income to combat the effects of inflation.

Investment in a commercial property fund provides a spread across a portfolio of offices,

Institute c1930 What are your memories of the college? THE memories of former staff and students

THE memories of former staff and students of West Cheshire College – in all its guises – are being sought for a new virtual time capsule Past Times @ West Cheshire College. As work begins on the College’s £70 million development programme, stories of College life in years gone by are needed for a ‘memories’ section on the website. Although the name ‘West Cheshire College’ only came into existence in 22 years ago, its history stretches back more than 100 years with the development of a learning institution initially for the city of Chester but eventually including parts of Cheshire and Wirral. Its origins can be traced back to the 19th Century when a number of scientific and philosophical societies, including Chester School of Art, were formed in the city. As demand for further education increased so did the College, which saw it begin to encompass engineering-based courses and construction skills for men as well as domestic and typing skills for women. In 1948 all the further education provision in Chester was amalgamated to create Chester College of Further Education By the 1950s so many courses were developed that further education was being provided across five sites in Chester – Watergate Street, Grosvenor Street, Love Street, City Grammar School and Technical Annex, and George Street School Eventually land was purchased in Eaton Road to build the first dedicated campus at Handbridge, which was built at a cost of £500,000 and formally opened in 1963. If you want to add your memories and pictures to the College’s virtual time capsule either email them to collegememories@west-cheshire.ac.uk or by post (no stamp needed) Past Times @ West Cheshire College, Freepost CS554, Ellesmere Port Campus, Ellesmere Port, CH65 5AB.

Why making a Will is so important - TODAY

W E all know we are going to die, which is a subject most people would rather not think about .When you are young you may feel it’s an issue that doesn’t need to be

considered yet. But there are two things guaranteed in life; death and taxes. Death is unavoidable but some of the tax issues are. For those who want to decide where their assets go and have their wishes honoured it is important to plan ahead. This is particularly relevant in these economically challenging times. Today there are three common areas causing concern. First the problems that result when dying without making a will (intestate), secondly inheritance tax, and thirdly the rising number of incidents where homes have to be sold to pay for long term medical care.

Dying Intestate

Making a will for what is quite a modest outlay can potentially save relatives a lot of money. When a person dies without a will, almost anyone can make a claim on all or part of that person’s estate. This often results in huge legal costs to resolve the matter which is either deducted from the value of the estate or paid by the remaining relatives or friends. Not having a will can also mean, amongst other things:

• If you die before your children reach 18

the Court will decide who brings them up as

Guardians

• If you have separated you spouse will still inherit part of your property

• If you live with your partner but are not

married he or she may get nothing at all.

• If you have no relatives everything goes to the Crown

• If you have no relatives everything goes to the Crown I nheritance Tax A potential

Inheritance Tax

A potential inheritance tax liability can be minimised or even eradicated. Inexpensive

policies are available that ensure you will pass on as much of your estate to whom you choose rather than to HM Revenue and Customs. This is particularly pertinent for unmarried couples where each estate exceeds the nil rate band.

Care Home Fees

Long term care is now often needed for the sick and elderly who cannot be looked after at home. In one 12 month period alone in recent years 70,000 homes were sold in the UK to

fund long term care. A Property Protection Trust could save someone literally thousands of pounds.

If you allow them to, local authorities will have you sell your home to pay for the cost of a

private care home even though you have paid taxes all your lives in order to have a health care system. Putting your affairs in order, to avoid leaving our loved ones in an uncertain and stressful position, is one of the most important tasks you are ever likely to undertake.

IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

STEVE Christiano has a wealth of experience having worked in the kitchen and bathroom industry for 23 years.

Steve started his career at the age of 17 as an apprentice installer for a high quality bespoke kitchen and bathroom showroom. This gave him the experience to find his true calling: design. Steve has developed a reputation for visionary designs, exceeding customer’s expectations in terms of style, functionality and space utilisation.

Steve’s ongoing pursuit of perfection for both product and service has led him to open a showroom in Malpas, South Cheshire with his wife, Nicola and her father, Ken. Their philosophy is to combine individual style with uncompromising quality and service.

As a company Christiano’s specialise in the design and installation of beautiful kitchens and bathrooms but can also provide your bedroom or home study with the same quality furniture. From the smallest en-suite to the grandest kitchen each project is as individual as their clients and they believe that function and beauty need not be separate ideals. With a full project management service this need not be daunting, they have a vast experience of functional design but to have the perfect kitchen or bathroom their client’s input is essential.

Christiano’s are fully committed to follow your whole project through from design to installation and are very lucky to have their own trusted team of tradesmen to install your room with the least possible disruption. They intend to maintain their high level of recommendation and referral and to this end feel that customer satisfaction is imperative.

Christiano’s products range from the cutting edge design of Alno German kitchens to their own traditional timber or painted range. Their bathroom products range from high performance power showers and wet rooms to luxurious baths and steam rooms.
