-- could say that the slings and
arrows fired at Junior’s crew chief
(and first cousin), Tony Eury Jr.,
are functional because they aren’t
blaming Earnhardt himself.
But Earnhardt isn’t a cynic or a
marketer. He’s as honest as anyone
in NASCAR, which means that,
when he’s asked about how honest
he is, he replies by saying he’s
pretty honest.
“I always try to be honest, and
I’ve never really tried to
intentionally lie to somebody,
especially when it comes to the
media,” he said at Las Vegas
Motor Speedway. “But I have
never said I was always right about
everything.”

things to get all the criticism and
give him a break, which is fine
with me.”

April Fools’ Burger and Fries
Surprise
This April Fools’ Day “Burger
and Fries” is such a surprise that no
one will believe their eyes. Make
this whimsical treat that looks like
hamburgers and French fries but is
actually a yummy dessert. While
you’re in the spirit of the day,
make another favorite April Fools’
activity, “Fake Spills.” Watch my

In the meantime, prepare this
“Burger and Fries” recipe for an
April 1st caper or for a birthday
party any time of year. Kids and
adults will love the treat.
For 10 servings, you’ll need:
--10 clean, small tuna or pineapple
cans, greased and with labels
removed. (Be sure there are no
sharp edges on the cans.)
--1 box standard yellow-cake mix
--1 standard brownie mix baked to
1-inch thickness on a rimmed
cookie sheet
--2 tablespoons corn syrup
--red and yellow frosting
--sesame seeds
--2 kiwis, peeled and sliced
--sugar-cookie dough (homemade
or prepared mix from the
refrigerated section of your grocery
store)
BURGERS
Prepare and spoon cake batter
into cans, filling each can half-full.
Bake according to cupcake
directions on the box, adding a few
minutes to baking time. (Use any

When slightly cool, ease cake out
of cans and cool completely. Slice
open each “bun”; brush the tops of
the “buns” with corn syrup, then
sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Use one of the cans as a cookie
cutter to cut round “burgers” out of
the baked brownies. Set each
cutout on the bottom half of the
“buns.” Drizzle some red and
yellow frosting on the brownie to
look like ketchup and mustard.
Place sliced kiwi alongside to
resemble pickles.
FRENCH FRIES
Make 1-inch accordion folds on a
sheet of heavy aluminum foil and
set on a cookie sheet with folds
slightly spread apart. Slice and
mold cookie dough into 2-inch
strips to resemble French fries. Set
each strip in a groove on the foil.
Bake according to recipe directions
until golden. Cool slightly on
cooling rack, then remove from
foil while still warm for best
results.
Serve with red frosting “ketchup”
on a platter with the “burgers.”

• On March 29, 1806, the Great National Pike, also known as the -Lillian Hellman -Victor Borge
Cumberland Road, becomes the first highway funded by the national *** ***
treasury. The initial appropriation of $30,000 was made by congressional
act and covered the first leg from Cumberland, Md., through the
Appalachian Mountains to Wheeling in western Virginia on the Ohio

• On March 28, 1915, the first American is killed in the eight-month-old

European conflict that would become known as the First World War.
Leon Thrasher, a 31-year-old mining engineer and native of
Massachusetts, drowned when a German submarine torpedoed the
cargo-passenger ship Falaba, on its way from Liverpool to West Africa,
off the coast of England.

• On March 25, 1933, President Herbert Hoover accepts the newly

commissioned USS Sequoia as the official presidential yacht. Before it
was commissioned as the presidential yacht, the Department of
Commerce used the Sequoia as a decoy to catch Prohibition law-
breakers.

• On March 24, 1958, Elvis Presley is inducted into the U.S. Army.
Although he had been drafted the previous December, the Army granted
him a deferral so he could finish shooting the film “King Creole.”

• On March 27, 1964, the strongest earthquake in U.S. history,

measuring 8.4 on the Richter scale, slams southern Alaska, creating a
deadly tsunami. Some 125 people were killed and thousands injured.
The tidal wave, which measured over 100 feet at points, devastated
towns along the Gulf of Alaska and caused carnage in British Columbia,
Canada; Hawaii; and the West Coast of the United States.

• On March 26, 1970, the classic documentary “Woodstock,” showing

the August 1969 concert that drew half a million people to a dairy farm
in New York, premieres. The film won an Oscar for Best Documentary.

• On March 23, 1999, author Thomas Harris delivers his 600-page

manuscript for his new novel, “Hannibal,” to Delacorte press. He had
promised the follow-up to “The Silence of the Lambs” more than 10
years earlier as part of a two-book contract that paid him a $5.2 million

Although colorectal cancer is considered the second-leading
cause of cancer death in the country, it is among the more
preventable diseases if people would get regular screenings
before it’s too late.
“With proper screening starting at age 50 as the primary
method, people can greatly reduce their chance of getting
colorectal cancer,” says Eyad Al-Hattab, M.D., medical director
of Oncology/Hematology at Bradford Regional Medical Center’s
Cancer Care Center, a regional clinical network member of
Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
“It’s recommended to have a colonoscopy done at age 50 for
both men or women,” he notes.

“But there are definitely more people who can and should get
screenings,” Dr. Al-Hattab says.
“People should undergo the procedure when there are no
symptoms and they are feeling fine. If they wait for symptoms

Between 5 and 10 percent of pre-cancerous colorectal polyps
will become cancer if not removed, according to National
Cancer Institute experts. Removing these polyps reduces
colorectal cancer risk.
“Polyps are a point where we can intervene to prevent
colorectal cancer,” says Dr. Al-Hattab. “Among the best
screening methods is a colonoscopy.” This is a procedure which
looks inside the colon or rectum for polyps, abnormal areas or
