MVLE 40th Anniversary 2011 ANNUAL REPORT

We are proud to be celebrating our fortieth anniversary. Forty years ago, MVLE began in a church basement. Today we have multiple facilities and a budget of more than 14 million dollars. More importantly, MVLE has played a critical role in providing employment opportunities and community supports to more than a thousand individuals with disabilities. We can celebrate that throughout the past 40 years we have been in the vanguard providing employment and community services for individuals with disabilities. This year, MVLE remained in the forefront by becoming the first non-profit to be accepted in the Department of Defense, Mentor-Protg with Northrop Grumman Corporation. Through the Mentor-Protg program, MVLEs capability is growing to create more community employment options through Federal and commercial business contracts. Too many individuals with disabilities are unemployed or under employed working less than full time or earning less than a minimum wage. MVLE is focused on building business opportunities to lower that unemployment rate and allow us to support rehabilitation services and therapies for individuals with disabilities. MVLEs Working Warrior program is focusing on providing training and jobs for wounded soldiers and returning veterans who seek to enter the job force (after suffering disabling injuries) while serving our country. We are very optimistic about the groundwork we have laid to grow our scented floral product line. MVLEs scented floral products along with our growing number of Federal agencies, local and corporate business contracts and partnerships are creating the ultimate goal providing independence and autonomy through meaningful, rewarding and salaried jobs for individuals with disabilities. Experiencing a disability is a natural part of the human experience but having a disability in no way diminishes the individuals ability to enjoy selfdetermination, make choices, contribute to society, pursue meaningful careers, and enjoy full inclusion and integration in the economic and social mainstream of American Society. MVLE is proud to be on the forefront of this evolution. Based on what we have accomplished in the past forty years, and with the support of our individuals, family members, employees, volunteers and board members the next forty years will be cause for an even bigger celebration. April Pinch-Keeler, President/CEO Joe Apa, Chairman of the Board

MVLE HISTORY
In 1971 the parents of four adult individuals with disabilities established Eastern Fairfax Activities Center for Retarded Adults Inc. for their adult children with disabilities. Earlene Gray was hired as director and later Belinda Tillman joined her. Daily activities included a garden club, craft making, cooking and eld trips. Parents worked alongside the small but dedicated staff volunteering transportation, legal services, bookkeeping, and hosting annual potluck celebrations. In February 1972, the organization was incorporated as a notfor-prot organization located at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, Virginia. The purpose of the corporation was to provide an organized, meaningful program and to provide selected services and training. Joseph Hemelings was hired in 1977 as the rst president. He created our rst logo, a graphic with the name Mt. Vernon Lee Enterprises, Inc in the middle of a circle of thistles that represented the chaos in the world and the circle protecting and surrounding MVLE from the chaos. This same year, a newly established Sheltered Workshop for production provided paid employment for participants to perform bulk mail and hand assembly services for metro area businesses. The Board of Directors in 1978 changed the name to Mt. Vernon Lee Enterprise Inc. Services and enrollment expanded during the 1980s, and MVLE relocated to Calvary Presbyterian Church on School Street in Alexandria, Virginia. Transitional Job Training (TJT) was started by Nancy Richards and later expanded by Viviane Herger. TJT provided group supported employment to groups of 5 to 8 individuals accompanied by a supervisor. The group performed housekeeping, food service and banquet preparation for a paid wage. MVLE obtained its rst real corporate headquarters when it leased space on Cinderbed Road. In 1993 MVLE received our rst AbilityOne contract providing custodial services for the Bostetter Federal Courthouse in Alexandria. That contract continues to this day. When Joseph Hemelings retires a vacuum in leadership occurs that threatens to dissolve the organization or potentially require a merger with another organization. Families advocate to Fairfax County Board of Supervisor Gerry Connolly who champions MVLEs cause to remain an independent organization. When Tim Farr is hired as president in 1995, MVLE revenues total $1,683,840 and 120 individuals are receiving services with a staff of 38. MVLE programs within ve years outgrow the space at Cinderbed and MVLE moves to Boston Boulevard to have sufcient space to provide therapies and serve a bigger enrollment. In 1996 MVLE supports the initiation of a selfadvocacy group that would be later called Our Voices Count. With the beginning of 2000 and through 2011 MVLE continued to achieve multiple successes. In 2001, MVLE was CARF accredited. The number of AbilityOne contracts continue to grow. A small grant from St. Marys Episcopal Church in Arlington enabled the creation of new mission statement, tagline, and website. MVLE strategically focused on increasing community and business partnerships while Creating Futures One Person at a Time. The starsh and the starsh story are used to communicate how a difference can be made one person at a time. In later years, our starsh symbol will change to stars that represent MVLEs ve star service commitment.

You just dont know what it was like in the beginning. We didnt have anything and we had to make it work and it was fabulous.
- Earlene Gray

In 2010, MVLE became the rst nonprot to be accepted into the Department of Defense Mentor-Protg Program with Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC). In 2011 MVLE initiates a Working Warrior Transition Program to help warriors transition from the military workforce to the civilian sector. Since the early vision of its founders in 1971, MVLE can be proud of its tremendous growth and accomplishments. Today, we provide increasingly specialized training and therapies in multiple locations and we are creating greater numbers of job opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The vision of creating futures one person at a time has continued to grow through our efforts to expand community partners, increase business opportunities and obtain signicant Federal and private contracts. Quality and innovative rehabilitation and job training are allowing individuals with disabilities to succeed. Today MVLE is an internationally accredited agency providing daily work opportunities and rehabilitation services to over 594 adults with disabilities in more than 150 metro businesses and federal agencies. With an annual revenue totaling 14 million, we have forged increased sustainability while diversifying revenues through new business initiatives like Digital Stream and Ability Nation Scentsations. We are providing individuals with disabilities with employment opportunities that increase their nancial independence regardless of the severity of disability. Through the supports and services we provide, individuals are able to showcase their unique talents and abilities for community businesses. They are achieving the ultimate goal independence and autonomy through meaningful, rewarding and salaried jobs.

In the beginning corporations were very skeptical of having our people work alongside them they were very uncomfortable. But those who protested most vigorously would fall in love with our people. - Viviane Herger

COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

Community Employment Services was the third program added at MVLE. In the early 1980s business and cultural norms expanded to include job opportunities for individuals with disabilities. At rst these job opportunities were volunteer positions at a couple of hotels and hospitals. In an effort to increase sustainability those volunteer positions were replaced with paying opportunities for the approximately 40 individuals in the program. Two hotels and an apartment building became the rst employers and a large contract at the Radisson Hotel in Alexandria soon followed. This marked the beginning of MVLE establishing itself as a place where people living with disabilities could come to receive employment services and earn fair wages. MVLE offers situational assessments, training and supported group employment at integrated community-based work locations. One full-time MVLE Job Coach works alongside four to eight individuals at each job site to provided ongoing training to

develop job, social, employability and mobility skills. Indirect assistance is also offered through transportation training, employer counseling and advocacy. MVLE currently operates over 25 locations that provide jobs in food/dining services, janitorial services, housekeeping, grounds keeping, deliveries, general cleaning and serves over 140 individuals. Some of our clientele includes Guest Services Incorporated, Eurest Corporation, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chick-Fil-A, 7-Eleven, Arlington County Government, and Greenspring Village.
