SUGGESTED FIRST STEPS Music Workshop and Group Beginning Instruction, or Individual Instruction and Fundamentals of Music, and Large Ensembles and Specialized Small Ensembles

Individual and Group Beginning Instruction

FINANCIAL AID IS AVAILABLE. Individual Instruction Individual instruction is offered at all levels in piano and organ, all string, brass, woodwind, percussion, fingerboard instruments, composition and music theory. Settlement requires students to have an instrument for study and, in limited circumstances, may be able to assist students in acquiring instruments on loan. Many local vendors offer instrument rentals at reasonable rates. Settlement maintains and distributes a list of vendors at each branch for the information of students, but not as an endorsement. Individual voice instruction is offered to students age 14 and older. The Gleeksman-Kohn Childrens Choir is recommended for children ages 8-14 who wish to develop their singing skills. PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES Workshops: Given by individual lesson teachers for four to six students. Workshops provide a valuable opportunity for performance, supplementary instruction and discussion with peers. They may replace a regular lesson, or be used as a make-up or rescheduled lesson. Performance Hours: An informal recital for a walk-in audience. Open to all students at any level

with teachers permission. Schedules are posted at each branch. Student Recitals: Held periodically at each branch. Students appear at the recommendation of a teacher and with approval of a Branch Director. Parents and friends are encouraged to attend. Schedules are posted at each branch, or visit www.smsmusic.org. Concerts and Master Classes: Given by faculty and guest artists and take place at all locations throughout the year. They are free to all students. Concert schedules are available at all locations, or visit www.smsmusic.org. Attendance at these performances is an important adjunct to a complete music education.

CERTIFICATION Students may be recommended by their teacher for Certification at the appropriate level of achievement, according to the Schools curriculum and by audition before the Branch Director. Certification culminates in a special concert and awarding of certificates at each branch. Students receiving financial assistance are required to participate. LIBRARY Libraries at each branch maintain collections of music from the curriculum, reference materials and listening facilities. Students, parents and friends are welcome to visit and are encouraged to enjoy the resources the libraries offer.
