CITY NEWSLETTER
n the Mayor's offce, we are
focused in April on "Serving
our Seniors! We have been
discussing for some time now,
how we will invite our senior
residents to become more in-
volved in Promise South Salt
Lake, Community Connection,
our South Salt Lake Neigh-
borhood Centers, activities,
events, and programs. We
have been busily planning the
Diamond Senior Ball at the Co-
lumbus Center on April 19. My
mother had hip replacement
surgery this past month and is
recovering well. This event brought new awareness and apprecia-
tion for the contributions that my mother makes to my son's lives.
am especially grateful for her insight on the needs of older city
residents and for her essential support for my kids and the way she
supports my offce in a multitude of ways.
Salt Lake County Aging Services Transportation Coordinator, Ja-
net Frick, has just been published in the nternational Journal on
Aging and Society: Towards Age Friendly and Sustainable Com-
munities. Janet eloquently points out our need for socialization,
safety, and domestic economics. She particularly looks at aging
in place and cohousing. Senior housing planning is now a vital
component of our SSL Housing Plan, for as our population ages
we want to be ready with appropriate, beautiful spaces to keep our
seniors in South Salt Lake. She also promotes a new wave of se-
nior employment opportunities that stem from the development of
technology. Janet is supporting my "Serving our Seniors initiative
as she helps us better identify our residents needs.
We are grateful for Salt Lake County Aging Services programs, in-
cluding the Senior Center located in the Columbus Center. Penny
White does a great job, and encourage all of us to stop by to
see how we can be involved or lend a hand. We are advocating
for more programs on the ground here in South Salt Lake. We
are creating new recreation offerings, such as yoga, Zumba, and
others, and working on organizing clubs, such as the HAM Radio
Club that meets the frst Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Fire
Station at 3265 South 900 West.
urge everyone in the community to reach out to neighbors of
every age. We recognize and honor the perspective, expertise,
experience, and personal histories of South Salt Lake residents.
We celebrate our Seasoned Citizens!

n its third year, South Salt Lake Urban Livability

Department's Community Connection is a nationally
recognized strategic initiative that targets a specifc
South Salt Lake neighborhood to focus resources and
volunteers. The Community Connection neighborhood to
be served in 2013 is the area surrounding Helm Avenue
(pictured at left). Neighborhoods are selected because
they have a disproportionate need of city resources. The
project will run from April through October 2013.

"The Community Connection Helm Avenue Project aims
to improve the safety, look, and feel of the neighborhood
to stabilize the housing stock, and support Promise South
Salt Lake efforts to strengthen education and youth
outcomes, says Urban Livability Department Director
Glenn Smith. "The goal of the project is to improve
community safety by designing and implementing
effective, comprehensive approaches to addressing crime
within the neighborhood as part of a broader strategy to
advance neighborhood revitalization through cross-sector
community-based partnerships.
Community Connection involves many partners, including
K2 Church, RAN Foundation, United Way of Salt Lake,
South Salt Lake residents, the City of South Salt Lake
employees, Salt Lake County Community Development
Block Grant, Code Enforcement, South Salt Lake
Police Department, Granite School District, Community
Development Corporation of Utah (CDC), Assist, Zion's
Bank, SL County Refugee Services, Latinos in Action, and
AmeriCorps.

Making Street Crossings Easier
WalkScore.com ranked
South Salt Lake as the #1
most walkable city in the
State of Utah last year,
based on the number of
jobs, shopping, transit and
homes within easy walking
distance. Urban Design Di-
rector Sharen Hauri says,
"What really makes a com-
munity walkable is the sidewalks, streets and crosswalks.
"Crossing the street may seem like a simple task, but think back
to when you were younger and how many years it took before
your parents let you cross the street alone, says Hauri. "You not
only had to be physically able and quick, but you had to watch
and listen closely and use good judgment. Crossing the street
can be dangerous both to anyone whose sight, hearing, walking
or decision-making is even slightly impaired as well as drivers and
bicyclist crossing their paths.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (known as ADA), a federal law,
requires that street crossings be highly visible, safe, and easy to
move though. South Salt Lake requires that all new sidewalks,
curbs and crossings meet ADA standards. The South Salt Lake
Public Works Department is on a schedule to replace all sidewalks,
ramps and crossings that do not meet these standards.
n 2012, the South Salt Lake Public Works Department removed

The AvaIon Theatre is Reborn as
The Childrens Theatre
Michael Andrew and Alice
Tripelas Siouris built and opened
the Apollo Theatre on New Years
Eve 1946 at 3065 S. State Street
with the movie "San Antonio
starring Errol Flynn and Alexis
Smith. Ticket prices were 45
cents for adults, 14 cents for
children. Art Proctor reopened
the Apollo as the Avalon Theater
in 1963. n 1980, Art added
a video rental business, also
specializing in classical movies.
Then in 1993, he added a stage
and the theatre began to feature
a hypnotist. The theatre struggled
for about a decade, and after
serving as a concert venue and
church, was largely vacant and
for sale by 2006.

n 2011, the Children's Theatre, a

owned by Joanne and James

covered the Avalon. They reno-
vated the 185-seat auditorium
with art-deco period fxtures, light-

April Health Tips
1. Drink water! f you choose to drink water instead of things like
juice, soda, or sweetened drinks, you will see your energy level go
up and your weight go down. Cut out sugary drinks entirely!
2. For lunch and dinner, fll half of your plate with fruits and veg-
etables. A quarter of your plate should be protein (things like meat,
fsh, or eggs), and a quarter for grains or starch (like corn, pota-
toes, rice, pasta, or bread). Filling up on healthy fruits and veggies
is very good for your body and helps you eat fewer calories.
3. f you are hungry between meals, have a small snack that has
both protein and carbohydrates. You can do this by eating a piece
of fruit (such as a banana or apple), 3 cups of air-popped popcorn
(no butter!), a serving of light (non-fat) yogurt, 1 cup of baby carrots
with 2 Tbsp. of hummus, 14 almonds; there are many healthy and
delicious options.
South Salt Lake offers many thanks to The K2 Church and South
Salt Lake Police Athletics/Activities League (PAL) for an amaz-
ing service day of service on Saturday, March 9, 2013; the halls
of the Central Park Community Center were brightened with the
paint brushes and spirits of this wonderful group! nternationally

300 trip hazards, installed 1,085 linear feet (nearly 2 miles) of new
sidewalk, and installed 42 new ramps from the sidewalk to the
curb. This city department also accepts requests from the public
for traffc calming to slow down speeds on residential streets. To
make a traffc-calming request,

Salt Lake Police Athletics/Activities League (PAL) for an amaz-

paint brushes and spirits of this wonderful group! nternationally
renowned motivational speaker Nick Vujicic stopped by for a visit
to encourage and inspire the group; special thanks to Eric Winter
for arranging this incredible meeting!

On September 29, 2013, the
City of South Salt Lake will turn
75 years old!
As a third generation South Salt
Lake resident, I have so many
wonderful memories of grow-
ing up on Burton Avenue, rid-
ing my bike to Freeway Market,
and moving into my frst home
on Cordelia Ave. I have fond
memories of the One Golden
Summer celebration to com-
memorate the citys 50th an-
niversary. I cant believe that
25 years have fown by and
this year we will be celebrating
our beloved Citys 75th birthdayour Diamond Anniversary!
All year, at our city events, we will be interweaving themes
from 1938 to the present. For example, if you are attending
the Daddy Daughter Dance on February 8th, youll notice that
our princess theme gives a nod to Walt Disneys Snow White,
which was produced in 1937 and had its theatrical release
on February 4, 1938. Youll also see a focus on some real-
life princesses, this years Miss Teen Utah, Jessica Coombes,
and an emphasis on assuring that all of our modern-day South
Salt Lake princesses are college bound.
From our very literal roots as a farming community and
early industrial development area, our citys residents have
witnessed World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War,
Persian Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom and the Iraqi
War, and peace. Weve experienced recession and prosper-
ity, hard times and good times. We have neighbors who have
lived in South Salt Lake all their lives, those who are new to
our area, and some who are brand new to our country. Each
brings a unique skill set, education, or life experience that
adds to the remarkable favor of our community.
I am proud that South Salt Lake is being nationally recognized
for the way we are working together to make our city a safe,
clean, and beautiful place to live! Promise South Salt Lake,
Community Connection, new transit and trails are coming to
life this anniversary year, and as we forge our way into the
future, together we create a legacy of community, progress,
and hope.
Congratulations to all who live,
learn, work, and worship in
South Salt Lake! Best wishes
for our Diamond Anniversary!

The Parley's Rails, Trails and

501(c)(3) organization.
OUR MISSION
To assist city, county, state and
federal agencies and other
public and private partners in
completing a multi-use trail along
-80 via Parley's Creek Corridor
and the Sugar House Rail Spur to
connect the Bonneville Shoreline
Trail with the Provo-Jordan River
Parkway.
Parleys Trail is funded through
Proposition 1 from the November 2012
election. Approximately $4 million will be
spent in South Salt Lake, building the
trail from 500 East to 900 West. Five
million dollars will be spent in Salt Lake
City to complete their sections. The frst
section to be completed will be adjacent
to the streetcar, from 1050 East to State
Street, and will open in December 2013,
when the streetcar opens. The 12 wide
paved trail is made for walking and biking
and will have safe crossings at all major
streets, thanks to the new streetcar
crossings. A greenway is also proposed in
the corridor, with landscaping, lighting and
artwork. This will be built in Salt Lake City
immediately, with city funding. South Salt
Lake will be partnering with developers to
put these improvements in place as the
buildings around the streetcar corridor
develop. The overall trail funding comes
from Salt Lake County, which will level a
property tax of approximately $5.75 per
household annually to pay for 7 parks and
trail projects around the county.
Parleys Trail: Coming Soon to South Salt Lake
The Public Works Department encourages all South
Salt Lake Residents to become familiar with the City
Ordinances pertaining to snow removal. When there
is snow on the road, residents are required to remove
their vehicles from the street and remove snow from
the sidewalks and gutters in front of their homes. If
there is an issue with snowplowing on your street or if
you have questions about ordinances call Public Works
Director, Dennis Pay, at 801.483.6038.

South Salt Lake Snow Removal
Mayor Cherie Wood and the Promise South Salt Lake Team formulated our goals, or promises, based on very specic research and
models of other high achieving communities. Our promises were created with South Salt Lake children, families, residents, and seniors
in mind. Promise South Salt Lake is about working with each other and in partnership with United Way of Salt Lake and other
organizations to coordinate, collaborate, and to pool resources to make real, measurable progress toward dened goals that will
improve our young peoples futures and enhance the overall quality of life for everyone in our community.
Three Promises:
1. Every child has the opportunity to attend and graduate from college
2. Everyone has a safe, clean home and neighborhood
3.Everyone has the opportunity to prosper
Promise South Salt Lake Motto:
What we wish for ourselves and for our families, we wish for everyone in our community.
