the yard
Astilleros Canarios S.A. (Astican) is a privately owned ship repair yard whose well experienced staff and subcontractors provide the capabilities to perform repairs, maintenance and conversions on all types of vessels and/or offshore units. The yard is located in the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) just off the North West coast of Africa. Due to this special geographical situation the Canary Islands enjoy an average year round temperature of 21 C with a very low rainfall intake. This advantage makes easy the performance of our countless jobs which in Northern Europe would be difficult to accomplish on schedule considering their adverse weather conditions. The dry-docking system is a versatile Syncrolift platform with a lifting capacity for vessels up to 36.000 DWT. The yard is equipped with special workshops to cover all rigs specific requirements. It has 560 m of piers with a special location for oil rigs, with certified and tested bollards and proper drafts.
In addition to the repairs and conversions carried out in the yard to the different types of vessels, the offshore sector represents an important part of our activities. The offshore projects in the West coast of Africa keep a large number of OSVs, anchor handling vessels, research vessels and oil rigs trading in the area. Consequently, and thanks to the privileged location of the Canary Islands, the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has an important traffic of these units for bunkering operations, crew changes, spare parts delivery and repairs. Specifically regarding the offshore activity, the yard is located in the crossroads of three of the most important areas of the world; West Africa, the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. In the almost 40 years of the yards activity and our introduction to oil rig repairs as from the year 2000, from the repair point of view there have been numerous examples of extensive repairs to supply vessels of well known companies. The increase in volume and complexity of the repairs to be performed led us to improve and adequate our workshops and installations as follows: installation of overhead cranes with higher capacity in the workshops to allow the handling of heavy azimuth thrusters, dredging of the seabed to allow the mooring of semisubmersibles with protruding thrusters, laying of fibre optics for IT connections by the quai side offices, etc. From the prefabrication and fitting of structures to handling and disassembling of heavy azimuth thrusters, Astican has the means and expertise to fulfill Owners expectations. Some recent outstanding projects carried out by the yard can be found in the following pages.
