Bold, Beautiful and Damned

The world of 1980s fashion illustrator
Tony Viramontes
Dean Rhys-Morgan

When Tony Viramontes work appeared in the late

1970s, his hard and direct style of drawing was a
marked contrast to the prevailing soft-pastel school
of fashion illustration. He scored immediate success,
rapidly acquiring the kind of prestigious editorial
commissions normally given to photographers, from
Lei, Per Lui in Italy, Vogue in the USA, The Face in
Britain, and Le Monde and Le Figaro in France.
This beautiful hardcover book brings together
an extensive collection of his work, featuring
striking images of smoldering and smoky-eyed men
and women who vibrate with New Wave energy.
Viramontes worked with some of the most celebrated
names in fashion including Yves Saint Laurent,
Valentino, Chanel, Claude Montana, and Christian
Dior.
After completing a degree in costume design at the Wimbledon
College of Art, UK, Dean Rhys Morgan worked alongside Isabella
Blow at Tatler magazine. Contributing regularly to The Telegraph
and The Sunday Times, he worked as a fashion and interiors
journalist before establishing an online gallery specializing in midcentury fashion and interior illustration.
Retrospective of the artists work, with never-before-seen
images from his familys private collection
Viramontes worked for many top fashion houses, including
Versace, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent

Walk the Line

The Art of Drawing
Marc Valli and Ana Ibarra

Drawing has always been a fundamental skill and

good drawing skills allowed artists to grasp the
reality around them. At the turn of the millennium,
however, the general impression was that with the wide
availability of computers, scanners, digital cameras
and image software, drawing would dwindle into a
marginal activity. In fact, the opposite happened: the
enthusiasm for digital imagery died down and the
ability to draw has become a treasured skill.
In the art world, attitudes to drawing have also
changed. Drawing became a way of making a
statement as an artist, of showing masterly skill
something that up to then had been most commonly
associated with painting. After centuries in the shadow
of its more illustrious fine art relatives, drawing started
to be appreciated for its own sake, as an art discipline,
an end in itself, an art form.
Walk the Line: The Art of Drawing includes
interviews with the international selection of artists, as
well as examples of their work. It will appeal to anyone
interested in contemporary art and illustration.
Marc Valli is the co-founder of retail and book-selling company
Magma in the UK, and of visual art magazines Graphic and
Elephant. He is the author of RGB (Reviewing Graphics in Britain)
and co-author of Microworlds (Laurence King).
Ana Ibarra graduated in Philosophy in Spain, where she was born.
She came to London to study Product Design. She is currently one of
the editors of Elephant magazine.

Modern pattern cutting developed with the industrialisation

of sewing and the development of mechanical processes.
From the start of the Industrial Revolution technology defined
the way the clothing industry developed. Crafts men and
women invented labour-saving devices to increase production.
As the cultural trend towards uniformity gathered pace,
the demand for standardised clothing began to outstrip
supply. Replication was needed and templates (patterns) for
gentlemens clothes began to be produced. Initial attempts
resulted in poorly fitting garments; the sizing of patterns would
take considerable experimentation before a recognised sizing
system was achieved through the use of the newly conceived
1-yard measurement tape. Laid out in inches, this gave tailors
a regulated tool to record human dimensions. From these
observations a mathematical drafting system was conceived,
which was based on the principles of geometry and
anatomical proportions.
In the first half of the nineteenth century numerous technical
publications appeared to support the new drafting technique:
The Improved Tailors Art by J. Jacksons (1829) Science
Completed in the Art of Cutting by W. Walker (1839) and
A Practical Guide for the Tailors Cutting-Room by J. Coutts.
It was during this period, particularly in France, that technical

10

training was established; Elisa Lemonnier opened one of the

first professional schools in Paris to offer cutting and tailoring
among its courses. Along with the demand for cheaper
clothing, in 1860 the first mail order fashion catalogues to
publish paper patterns appeared; the latest styles could be
bought by the middle and working classes throughout Europe
and the US, bringing the ability to produce cheaper clothing
to a wider audience and creating a forerunner of the ready-towear genre.
At the beginning of the twentieth century the craft of tailoring
began to divide into specialisms designer, pattern cutter
and seamstress. It is a working model that has survived to the
present day, replicated in fashion houses and garment factories
all over the world. Mass production brought duplication and
the development of standard sizes but fit was still of crucial
importance throughout the first half of the last century.
Although clothing was pre-constructed, the discerning
gentleman would have it adapted to the sartorial fashions of
his day. Alterations were made and silhouettes tailored through
subtle changes to the cut, line or proportion of the garment.
The process of standardisation was then speeded up by the
onset of the two World Wars, when standardised patterns

and size charts were needed to produce military uniforms for

both officers and infantry alike. Clothing the army gave the
garment industry an opportunity to review its procedures and
attitudes towards sizing and construction, and this resulted in
the formation of national registered organisations to regulate
clothing production.
Away from the austerity of war, social hierarchy still demanded
that a gentlemans wardrobe should have multiple dress
options, even though a new era was dawning as the genderrole ideologies of the pre-war period were vanquished and
modernism was embraced. The 1950s brought a new approach
to male dress, championed by a younger generation who
rebelled against the constraints of tradition. With the growing
influence of American youth cultures, formal attire with its stiff
silhouettes began to lose its appeal. New modes of informal
dressing appeared throughout towns and cities across Europe
and America. Menswear producers responded to the growth in
consumerism and this new attitude by importing or recreating
foreign styles associated with music, film or leisure activities
(Italian tailoring, US varsity, German sportswear). Relaxed
attitudes towards life brought a new direction for mens fashion
assisted by technological advances in textiles and the uses of
synthetic materials to create easy-wear, functional clothing.

ReFashioned
Cutting-Edge Clothing
from Upcycled Materials
Sass Brown

The area of recycling and upcycling is a rich and

growing source of innovative design in the fashion and
accessories industries.
In a fast-fashion world of throw-away clothing, it is
the ultimate expression of the slow-fashion movement,
with each piece individually conceived and crafted
from scratch, using different materials each time.
ReFashioned features 46 international designers who
work with recycled materials and discarded garments,
reinvigorating them with new life and value. The result
is beautiful and desirable clothing and accessories that
also make an important statement to the fashion world
about its wasteful and exploitative practices.
Sass Brown is the Assistant Dean of the School of Art and Design
at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, and the former
Resident Director of its study abroad program in Florence, Italy.
As a designer, researcher, writer, journalist and blogger, her area
of expertise is eco fashion in all of its various expressions. She is
the New York editor for Coco Eco Magazine and writes for a range
of other magazines and websites. Her first book, Eco Fashion, was
published by Laurence King in 2010.
The only book to look at recycling and upcycling in the
fashion industry
Illustrated with exciting fashion images showing stylish
upcycled clothing, plus behind-the-scenes shots of discarded
materials being reworked
Shows designers what can be done with pre- and postconsumer waste materials
Features innovative designs from around the world

Draping
The Complete Course
Karolyn Kiisel

Draping is the art of using cotton muslin to create

a fashion design directly on a mannequin. It is an
essential skill for fashion designers. In this book,
Karolyn Kiisel presents a series of step-by-step
projects, creating real garments in classic styles, that
are designed to develop skills from the most basic to
more advanced techniques.
Starting with the basics of choosing and preparing
the dress form for draping, the book advances through
pinning, trimming, and clipping, and creating shape
using darts and tucks, to adding volume using pleats
and gathers, and handling complex curves. Advanced
skills include how to use support elements such as
shoulder pads, under layers, and petticoats, and how
to handle bias draping. The book culminates with a
chapter on improvisational skills.
Each skill and technique throughout the book is
explained through specially commissioned step-bystep photographs and line drawings that bring the art
of creating womenswear in three dimensions to life.
Karolyn Kiisel is a professor in the Fashion Design department at
Woodbury University in Burbank, California, and has also taught at
Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Her fashion designs
have been sold internationally, and her costume work has appeared
widely on screen and stage.
Draping is the technical term for using fabric to create a
garment directly on a dress form, an essential skill for all
fashion designers
Uses case studies and step-by-step projects to build
knowledge
Examines draping in a range of key garments classic,
contemporary, historical, and costume
Includes a DVD of 32 short videos in which the author
demonstrates essential techniques

Clothing for Everyday Wear
Yoshiko Tsukiori

Stylish Dress Book features a selection of beautiful

clothes that you can wear every day. Using simple
shapes and individual details, this book shows you
how to craft a stylish collection of garments to your

in cheap fabrics, this book offers a fabulous homemade
alternative. As every sewist knows, DIY fashion is the
best way to be stylish.
What makes these Japanese sewing books different
from other guides on the market is the simplicity of
the projects. The instructions come through a series

construction is easy to follow. The book also includes
four actual-size patterns. Choose from 26 different
garments and then set to work to make your own

Strategic Thinking for

Advertising Creatives
Alice Kavounas Taylor

Strategic thinking is central to creating a successful

advertising campaign, yet it is rarely taught
systematically. This book enables advertising creatives
to formulate a clear brief and to think strategically.
Structured according to the 11 essential elements
of a classic advertising brief, it offers a simple, clear,
universal template against which the student or young
creative can map his or her current project, and learn
to understand the key elements that make up a strong
brief. At the end of each chapter, the reader uses the
knowledge they have just gained on a hypothetical
project, so that by the end of the book, they have
employed each of the 11 essential elements and formed
their own creative brief.
Featuring international examples of current and
classic campaigns, Strategic Thinking for Advertising
Creatives is a primer in classic advertising techniques
and shows how these core principles are being adapted
online.
Alice Kavounas Taylor has enjoyed an award-winning, international
advertising career in London and New York. She was formerly
Senior Lecturer on the MA in Creative Advertising at University
College Falmouth, U.K., a course she originated, led and on which
she taught studio practice for 15 years.
Accessible, step-by-step approach takes the reader through
the 11 key stages of the classic creative brief

STRATEGIC THINKING FOR ADVERTISING CREATIVES

INTRODUCTION

A strong strategy
is the key

Consider the ad Still or sparkling?. The award-winning campaign for

The Economist has always stood out for its clarity, wit and simplicity; for achieving
its objective with the minimum of words. This particular ad ran on the inside back
cover of the Hardens guide to London restaurants in 2006. Its timeless. It makes
you think, Yes I want to be sparkling. In fact, I must be sparkling, or I might
not get promoted! I had better start reading The Economist this week. David
Abbott, writer and one of the founders of London agency Abbott Mead Vickers
BBDO, and art director Ron Brown, created this long-running campaign, which
launched in 1988 with the now-famous poster: I never read The Economist.
Management trainee. Aged 42. The approach looks simple enough in hindsight
but then dont most great ideas?

The message behind this

ad for The Economist takes a few

seconds to sink in. Seemingly
negative in tone, it was a bold,
but successful ad that arose out
of a larger strategy created by

Advertising based on a strong, flexible strategy will always help a brand to stand
out and make it sparkle, whatever the medium. The illustrious weekly publication
The Economist challenged the non-reader to try it.

Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO for

the publication.
2
This ad for The Economist
ran on the inside back cover of
Hardens 2006 guide to London
restaurants. Part of a longrunning, wider campaign, the
strong strategy ensured that
each ad could be written to fit its
location while building the brand.

Understanding strategy
helps to sell your idea

Strong strategic thinking lies

behind these ads by M&C Saatchi
for Dixons, out of which came
the award-winning slogan
The last place you want to go.

M&C Saatchi created the memorable campaign line, The last place you want to
go, for Dixons, a high street retailer of audio-visual technology in the UK. On the
face of it the line sounds fairly unpromising. Imagine yourself as the client,
hearing that line proposed to you at a meeting. (After all, a proposition is just
that an offer that will in some way benefit you.) Without a creative brief, even
an agency with a track record as impressive as M&C Saatchis would have a
devilishly hard time selling it. The strategy, and its resulting proposition, both need
the narrative of the whole brief to make it clear to a client why that strategy and
that proposition have the potential to lead to convincing, galvanizing creative work.

At the time, it was a risky strategy to begin with this bold, negative statement. It
takes you a moment to process the implication: that this person should be reading
The Economist. The tone is both subtle and in your face. Yet it manages to be
quick to take in as a poster has to be. And it didnt alienate existing, loyal
readers. After all, if you put off your current market in an attempt to extend it,
you could easily be left with no one.
What was the initial insight behind this work? What kind of research led to the
strategy that gave this campaign the springboard for such consistent creativity,
enabling it to run for a quarter of a century in a changing financial and business
world, yet remain fresh, effective, distinctive?

Key Interiors Since 1900

Graeme Brooker

This book defines the history of modern interior

design through the reuse of existing buildings. This
approach allows the history of the interior to be
viewed as separate from the history of architecture
and instead enables the interior to develop its own
historical narrative.
Following a brief introduction, the book is
organized in six chapters on the following themes:
home, work, retail, display, leisure, and culture.
Each chapter comprises a selection of case studies
in chronological order. 52 key examples dating from
1900 to the present are explored in terms of context,
concept, organization, and detail and are illustrated
with photographs, plans, sections, concept drawings,
and sketches.
This unique history will be invaluable for students
of interior architecture and design seeking a survey
tailored especially for them, as well as appealing to
interested general readers.
Graeme Brooker is The Head of the School of Fashion and Interiors
at Middlesex University, London. He is interested in the cultural,
historical, and philosophical dimensions of the interior and the
implications of reusing existing buildings. He has written numerous
books on the interior including the highly acclaimed Rereadings
(2004).
A new approach specifically tailored for interior design
students
Wide range of illustrations, including specially drawn
explanatory sketches

Innovative Houses
Concepts for Sustainable Living
Avi Friedman

Housing is rapidly having to adapt to the global

changes of the twenty first century. These include the
transformation of the family and the rise of the nontraditional household, increases in construction costs,
and concerns over climate change and the depletion of
natural resources. Designing residential environments
that address these issues is an urgent priority.
This book examines the latest residential design
trends that have arisen in response to these challenges.
Divided into four broad areas, tightly focused thematic
chapters look at twenty discrete topics, such as live/
work; adaptable housing; prefabrication; water
efficiency; green roofs; innovative landscaping. Each
chapter includes an essay that lays out principles,
methods, and practices.
Using text, drawings, and photos from a variety
of contemporary international practices, the book
demonstrates how these ideas can be applied by
architects. It offers a comprehensive collection of
strategies and examples that will inspire a much
needed housing revolution.
Avi Friedman began his architectural studies at the Politecnico
di Milano in Italy, receiving his doctorate from the University
of Montreal, Canada. He is a professor at the McGill School
of Architecture, Quebec, and has published extensively about
architecture in both academic and trade publications.
Covers all the latest trends and research on sustainable
housing design
Filled with clear diagrams and drawings as well as
photographs
20 chapters explain key points of sustainable design, while
over 35 recent housing projects illustrate these being put

Twentieth-Century Type
and Beyond
Mini Edition
Lewis Blackwell

This substantially revised edition of Lewis Blackwells

classic study provides an up-to-date, decade-by-decade
analysis of the issues that have shaped the history and
development of typographic design. The book provides
an informed and accessible guide to the typography of
the twentieth century and the key questions that are
shaping contemporary graphic practice.
Subjects include the arrival of mass production,
the development of the grid, the arrival of new media
forms, and the role the launch of the Macintosh played
in fostering a new generation of designers enfranchised
by digital technology. Beyond the twentieth century,
the digital sphere has grown exponentially, placing
typographic decisions in the hands of ever more users
of computers, smartphones, e-readers, and tablets.
Blackwell discusses the strains this has placed on type,
the fresh questions it has asked, and the way the forms
of letters are evolving in response.
Lewis Blackwell is Chief Creative Officer of Evolve Images and the
author of several critically acclaimed books. He was formerly the
worldwide creative head of Getty Images and publisher and editor of
Creative Review.
Provides a decade-by-decade analysis of the issues that have
shaped the history of typographic and graphic design

Research Methods
for Product Design
Alex Milton and Paul Rodgers

This book provides the reader with a comprehensive,

relevant, and visually rich insight into the world
of research methods specifically aimed at product
designers. It includes practical case studies and
tutorials that will inform, inspire, and help you to
conduct product design research better.
Product designers need a comprehensive
understanding of research methods as their day-to-day
work routinely involves them observing people, asking
questions, searching for information, making and
testing ideas, and ultimately generating solutions to
problems. Manifest in the design process is the act of
research. Huge technological advances in information,
computing, and manufacturing processes also offer
enormous opportunities to product designers such
as the development of intelligent products and
services, but at the same time raise important research
questions that need to be dealt with. Product designers
are, in many ways, best placed to address these
challenges because of the manner in which they apply
their design thinking to problems.
Paul Rodgers is Professor of Design Thinking in the School of
Design at Northumbria University, UK.
Alex Milton is Professor of Design and Head of the Faculty of
Design at the National College of Art and Design, Ireland.
In-depth coverage of traditional and new research methods

Structural Engineering
for Architects
A Handbook
Pete Silver, Will McLean, and Peter Evans

This book gives students of architecture an

understanding of the fundamental theories and
practice behind the creation of architectural
structures, helping them to develop an intuitive
understanding of structural engineering.
The book is divided into four sections: Structures in
nature looks at structural principles found in natural
objects. Theory covers general structural theory
as well as explaining the main forces encountered
in engineering. Structural prototypes includes
examples of modelmaking and load testing that can
be carried out by students. The fourth section, Case
studies, presents a diverse range of examples from
around the world actual buildings that apply the
theories and testing described in the previous sections.
The straightforward, informative text is illustrated
with specially drawn diagrams, historical examples,
models, CAD visualizations, construction details,
and photographs of completed buildings. As well as
providing a valuable reference and sourcebook, the
book will give students and newly qualified architects
the technical confidence to collaborate with structural
engineers.
Pete Silver and Will McLean teach at the School of Architecture at

General theory of structures

2.1.4
Material properties

2.1.4.2
Strain

Types of strain

When a sample of material is placed under load it will

undergo some deformation. This deformation will be
either via elongation, compression or shearing
depending on how the load is applied. Strain is a
measurement of the ratio of the extent of deformation
under load against the original dimension of a sample
of material. There are several different types of strain
including linear, volumetric and shear. Linear strain is
the ratio of the elongation under axial load against the
original length. This is written as:
Strain,
where

= dl / l
dl = extension, and
l = original length

When they are loaded, most materials exhibit elastic

behaviour in accordance with Hookes Law. As load is
applied materials deform and when the load is
removed they return to their original dimensions.
Plotting the strain against the stress in a material as it
is loaded produces the graph illustrated on the
opposite page. This example is based on a mild steel
sample. The straight line area indicates the linearly
elastic region. In this area the material adheres to
Hookes Law and returns to its original size as load is
released. The ratio of stress divided by strain in this
region is a constant value known as the elastic
modulus. For tensile forces that induce tensile
stresses and strains, this is more commonly known as
Youngs modulus. Other elastic moduli include the
shear modulus, volumetric modulus and Poissons
ratio, all of which are briefly explained in the
diagrams opposite.
Youngs modulus, E = linear stress/linear strain
=/
This value, combined with other sectional properties,
is used to calculate the stiffness of structural
members using the formula:
Stiffness

K = EI/L

Where

I = second moment of area

(see section 2.1.5.1)
L = length of member

material is behaving plastically and is represented

by the plastic range indicated on the graph opposite.

L = original dimension
dL = extension
W = force
Tensile strain

Shear strain

As load, and therefore stress, is increased

incrementally the material will eventually reach its
ultimate stress capacity, at which point it will break.
Both mild steel grade S275 and Aluminium 6061-T6
have very similar stress capacities of around 275
Newtons per square millimetre, meaning that they
will be able to support very similar loads prior to
reaching their yield strengths. Aluminium 6061-T6,
however, has a Youngs modulus of 68,900 Newtons
per square millimetre, which is approximately three
times smaller than that of mild steel at 205,000
Newtons per square millimetre; hence an aluminium
beam will deflect three times more than an identicalsized mild-steel beam under the same loads. In this
example the steel beam can be said to have a flexural
stiffness three times greater than an aluminium
beam as the geometrical properties I and L are
constant.
The extent of deformation that a material is able to
undergo before failure occurs determines whether it
is classified as brittle or ductile. Materials that fail
before strain reaches 5 per cent are classified as
brittle. These include concrete, timber, glass and
ceramics. Brittle materials tend to fail suddenly and
without warning. Materials such as mild steel and
aluminium are classified as ductile, as they can
exhibit a significant degree of deformation prior to
failure. This can often be seen as a change to the
cross-section of an element in tension, or high
deflection of beams in bending.

Parametric Design in Architecture

Wassim Jabi

Architects use computer-aided tools to help them

visualize their ideas and build models of their designs.
However, the majority of these models are built in
such a way that it makes them difficult to modify
interactively. Parametric design software addresses this
problem by allowing architects to specify relationships
among various parameters of their design model. The
advantage is that a designer can then change a few
parameters and the remainder of the model will react
and update accordingly and in a consistent manner
based on the pre-set associative rules.
Through a detailed description of various
parametric, generative, and algorithmic techniques,
this book provides a practical guide to generating
geometric and topological solutions for various
situations, including explicit step-by-step tutorials
that will enable the reader to understand both general
concepts and specific computational algorithms. While
the techniques and algorithms can be generalized
to suit to any parametric environment, the book
illustrates its concepts using the scripting languages
of one of the most powerful 3D visualization and
animation design software systems (Autodesk 3ds Max
MAXScript), one of the most popular open-source
Java-based scripting environments (Processing),
and a brand new language specifically tailored
for parametric and generative design (Autodesk
DesignScript).
This clear, accessible book will have a wide appeal
to students who would like to experiment more
with parametric techniques but lack the skills and
knowledge to do so.
Wassim Jabi is Senior Lecturer at the Welsh School of Architecture,
Cardiff University. He has a PhD in Architecture from the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Jabi is a past-president
of the Association for Computer-Aided Design In Architecture
(ACADIA) and a member of the Editorial Board of the International
Journal of Architectural Computing (IJAC) and the International

numerous papers in the area of computer-supported collaborative
design, computer-aided visualization, parametric design, and digital
fabrication.
