Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul (1 Samuel 18:3).

There is an old story (probably not true) that is told of Abraham Lincoln, during the Civil War. According to the story, the President was visiting some of the troops that were close to the battle front. A soldier called, Mr. President, pray that the Lord will be on our side. To which Mr. Lincoln responded, I would rather pray that we be on His side. Whether the story is true not, it has power. What really matters is that we be on His side; faithful, loyal, and true. Over the years, I have had many kind things said to me, and many words of encouragement. Among some of the most valuable are a few words stated in the midst of a difficult conversation. The person who said them may not even remember, but I do. The person said, There is no question, I will be on your side. That kind of loyal commitment inspires the best that anyone has to offer. In spite of the problems between David and King Saul, there was a strong bond between the young shepherd and the kings son, Jonathan. Think of how difficult Davids life would have been if Jonathan had joined his father in trying to exterminate his potential rival. Instead of seeking the throne for himself, the royal heir also faced the wrath of his father to support his friend. His character rose far above the ordinary. With His statement, I will be with you always, Jesus sets the standard for loyalty and commitment. Such loyalty seems to be rare, and must be precious. Amid the many things that are needed in the life of the church, very few will exist for long without the great character quality of loyalty. Loyalty to God, His Son, the Word, and even the local family bring out the best in us all. Russ
