Industrial plants are usually lighted with high bay reflectors at truss height above cranes. When cranes are in use the illumination from overhead reflectors is blocked ofi by the crane bridge and hoist motor assembly. To compensate Jor this loss of light underneath the crane, provision is made for installation of reflectors
under the catwalk or alongside the crane box structureBasic requirements for mechanical and electrical assem

Construction Features

bly are rugged construction of all fixture parts to withstand rough service and vibration inherent in crane operation. In addition, reffectom must have designs to producc highest initial and maintained oulputs as well as deep shielding of lamps to prcvcnl glare when crane
operators and floor mcn arc handling valuable products. Safe operation is enhanced by glare free, evenly dis

tributed illumination.

Three pairs of ll,lr" diameter shock absorber sleeves dampen all sidewise and vertical movement of cxANEr-rrE, thereby eliminating destructive shock and whip. The cRANELrrr is fastcned to the cranc by a 10fi" diameter, % inch thick metal plate. Wide flange construction assules solid contact with the crane. A % inch female pipe thread is plovided in thc hood for wiring from outlet box through flexiblc conduit.

When installed under the catwalk by crane manufacturers, cRANELTTE can be relamped by raising and rotating a hingcd segment of the catwalk floor. Projecting angle assemblies can be used to mount CRANELTTIT on sides of catwalk kick platcs or sidcs of crane structures.

The accompanying sketches show one method o{ mounting provided by crane manufacturers. It is advantageous to specify Holophane cRANELTTE on all crane orders.

Candlepower Distribution: "A No. 694 Dotted line: Bare 1000 W.,21,500 Lumen lamp.

Illumination Point-by-point calculations from photometric distribution curves should be used for lighting layouts.
The amount of illumination under a crane should equal the level provided by the general lighting system. In the calculations, outputs of reflectols can be based on 500, 750 or 1000 watt incandescent or 400 oi'1000 watt mercury vapor lamps.
Incandescent lamps should be operated at 120 volts. cranes are rated at higher voltages it is advisable to use auto-transformers for ac circuits and ballasts resistors for dc circuits.

If

Mercury lamps can be used on dc or ac cranes. Resistors are used for dc operation of 400 or 1000 rvatt mercury lamps. X{ercury larnp ballasts for all primary voltages are avaiiable for ac operation. Resistors and ballasts available from manufacturers of these lamp control
devices.
