6). SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITIES WITH RESPONSIBILITIES BLOCKWORKS A) Cleaning & Treatment Clean the surfaces of the area where to start laying blocks and sprinkle with water and removing of all loose concrete and shall be free from deleterious materials, projecting nails, splits and other defects. Chipping the face of the columns/RC wall where the block works are along the way for fixing . B) Fixing Only approved materials shall be used in Block works as per specifications and O/E requirements. Surveyor will give the coordinates and levels where will be the locations and limits of block works. Surveyor shall be responsible for setting out, layout, lines and other dimensional requirement in accordance with the approved drawing. Submerge/soak the concrete blocks before construction. Damp-proof courses shall be laid on and bedded in a bed of 1:4 cement mortar in as long lengths as practicable. Where joints have to be made, they must be lapped at least 20 cm in the runs and for full width on corners and the meeting surfaces, sealed with an adequate application of black bituminous water-proofing paste. At ground floor levels, the damp proof course for a wall shall extend to the full width on top of first row of blocks. Exposed DPC shall be protected from direct sun. The vertical damp proof course at reveals shall extend the full width of the return. Approved Damp proof material shall be placed at any wetted areas like kitchen, toilets and around the perimeter wall of the building. Approved G.I. metal lathe bedding and G.I. Dove tail flat metal shall be provided for 1 st layer and every 2nd layer of concrete blocks. All the joints shall have 300mm overlapping. Mortar for block work shall be cement mortar in the proportions 1 : 3 to 1 : 4 (Cement to sand). All materials shall be screened before mixing to remove lumps. Mortar, whether with or without plasticizer, shall be mixed only in sufficient quantity for the work immediately in hand and no partly set mortar shall be used. Mortar joints in block work have to be racked out to a depth of at least 15mm. All the openings related to services / Door / Windows / Ventilator will be made as per the approved drawings. All mortars shall be mixed by Mechanical Mixer. Pre-fabricated wooden box of pre-determined volume shall be used to measure the volume in sand in proportion with 1 bag of cement. The box/es shall measure 33cm X 33cm X 33cm which constitutes 3 or 4 times the volume of 1 bag cement as per specification. Therefore the proportions to be followed on the site shall be 1 bag

of cement to 3 or 4 boxes of sand as per specification. Only clean potable water shall be used to mix the mortar to the desired consistency. Cement and sand shall be from approved source. Concrete blocks shall be cut by the cutting machine so as to obtain sharp corners and to fit to adjoining works neatly. Chipped and broken blocks shall be removed. Verticality of block walls must be checked and monitored using plum bob and level bar (spirit level). The horizontal alignment must be verified using aluminum tube with straight edge. Block works more than 3 m in height shall be reinforced with reinforced concrete stiffening frame work comprising of 200 x 300 mm verticals at 4.00 meter c/c and 200 x 300 mm horizontals at mid-height or at every 3.00 meters in case wall height is bigger than 6.00 meters. Solid block works shall be provided wherever service pipes, cables, etc. are passing in wall (e.g. auxiliary electrical rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.) Block work under the ground slab, retaining walls and around foundations shall be solid block at least 200 mm thick and made by SRC or MSRC (type-II) cement according to underground soil conditions. Block work partitions less than 200 mm in thickness shall be solid block. Reinforced concrete frames of at least 200 mm width and the same thickness of the wall strengthen all opening through the block walls.

C) Inspection and Testing Before block work to be started and after concrete block has been laid, O/E shall be notified through inspection request. O/E comments on work shall be rectified and notified for re-inspection, if any. Approved block work materials shall be tested to laboratory for verification to meet the standard specifications and requirements. Tests shall be conducted for every 200 m2 of walls/each consignment of block brought to site. All concrete blocks shall comply with BS 6073. The compressive strength of the blocks shall comply with the following: o Concrete hollow blocks: Average of 10 blocks 7.0 N/sq. mm Lowest individual block 5.5 N/sq. mm o Concrete solid blocks: Average of 10 blocks 13 N/sq. mm Lowest individual block 8.0 N/sq. mm Curing Water curing shall be done until 7days as per specifications and O/E requirements.
