Subject Area: HEALTH: What is Health?

Grade Level: High School Special Education Day 1 Overview and Purpose: Students have to make choices every day about what they eat and the activities they participate in. Helping them think critically about foods, dangerous activities and physical health is important to encouraging them to have a healthy lifestyle. State Standard: Apply critical literacy/thinking skills related to personal, family and community wellness. Demonstrate behaviors that foster healthy, active lifestyles for individuals and the benefit of society. Objectives: Students will list the three aspects of overall health. The class will explain how the choices that people make can affect their health. The students will describe the factors that can be used to evaluate health. Timeframe: 1 period (60 minutes) Materials: Elmo Vocabulary Handout Photos Projector/Computer access Textbook Health Behaviors Handout Formative Assessment: I will be able to assess the students on their understanding by their final product, the health continuum model. Here it will display signs of unhealthy living, along with the aspects of living a healthy life. Detailed Procedural Steps: 1. To give me an idea of the students prior knowledge, I will ask the students what they know about health. What makes someone healthy or unhealthy? 2. I will then go into the vocabulary. I will provide the students with a vocabulary worksheet and using the Elmo we will write down the definitions. 3. Using the pictures, I will ask the students to explain how the images illustrate different aspects of health. These pictures will range from healthy eating to physically dangerous activities. 4. We will then begin discussing the section on What is Health.

5. Students will take a healthy survey, http://gln.dcccd.edu/jth_demo/Lesson1/Activity1.htm?bank 6. Once they are done with their surveys students will then design and label a health continuum. 7. After students have turned in their health continuums, they will be able to take another survey on the components to health at, http:///gln.dcccd.edu/jth_demo/JTH_ActivityBank1.swf Differentiation: Depending on the students level of learning, it will either be the vocabulary words or words and complete definitions. This will allow those that just need to focus on listening, to do that and keep classroom management going. I will also provide concrete examples of health to make it less abstract. For the students that are not able to copy the continuum model, I will provide them with a blank model and they can label accordingly. WHAT IS HEALTH?
