Knowledge management (KM) system is a phrase that is used to describe the creatio n of knowledge repositories, improvement of knowledge access

and sharing as well as communication through collaboration, enhancing the knowledge environment and managing knowledge as an asset for an organization. CMS stands for Content Management System, which is usually a way for you to upda te the content within your web site. Allowing you to add, update, and delete page s from your site, including images, multimedia etc... Document Management is similar, yet different, because it isn't maintaining your web site, but a bunch of documents you may have for download on your web site. Think of it like a library of files on your site, and you allow the user to sear ch them, bookmark them etc... but it isn't the actual site content itself. All of your paper, electronic forms, files, e-mails and faxes are documents. It does not matter whether they are contracts, leases, vendor communications, or even a thank you letter from a customer. These are all documents. Your busine ss documents are what document your daily business activities. When we think about records, they are the final, unalterable and legal recording of an event or a transaction. Many documents do become records. For example, a final, signed contract becomes a legal business record. However when you thin k about contracts, they don t spring into existence without creation, revisions, c ollaboration and reviews. Iterations of a contract until it is finalized are no t individual records. They don t reflect the transaction. At the most basic level, document management is the storage and retrieval of doc uments. However, records management is not the storage and retrieval of records , at its base level, it is the administration of the record retention schedule.
