Organized and Conducted by: Graz University of Technology (www.tugraz.at/) Graz, Austria Instructor: Prof. M. R. Riazi www.RiaziM.com

Venue:
Graz, Austria

Date: June 11-14, 2012

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Characterization of reservoir fluids and crude oil. Characterization is a technique that shows how one can use available laboratory data on a petroleum fraction, crude oil or a reservoir fluid to obtain various thermo-physical properties needed for process design, process simulation, reservoir simulation, design and operation of equipments related to production, transportation, refining and processing of these petroleum fluids.

Application of characterization methods in estimation of thermodynamic and physical properties related to production and processing of crude oil and natural gas as well as those related to quality, safety and environment of petroleum industry will be discussed with computer calculations.

Methods of prediction of solid formation such as asphaltene, wax and hydrate formation. Their impact in petroleum production and processing as well as their prevention and control.

The other objective of this course is to provide the participants a guideline to select a right characterization technique and property estimation method available in various process and reservoir simulators.

The course is particularly useful for:

o Chemical engineers o Petroleum engineers o Reservoir engineers o Mechanical engineers o Process engineers o Scientists (chemists, physicists and mathematicians) o Petroleum geologists o Operators o Computer engineers a

who are working in petroleum processing and production as well as process modeling and simulation of related industries. Participants should have at least a BSc degree in one of above engineering or science fields.

On the Importance of Characterization Methods and Properties Calculations for Petroleum Fluids
Methods of petroleum characterization and property estimation methods have important effects on optimum design and operation of processing units in petroleum refineries as well as reservoir and process modeling and simulation.

In this course we tell you theories of formation of oil and gas and the nature and types of petroleum fluids how to determine composition of various petroleum fluids from basic laboratory data importance of characterization methods selection of a characterization method in a process or reservoir simulator what data is needed for characterization techniques and what is the minimum data how to characterize a crude oil, petroleum fraction and a reservoir fluid how to check measured / reported data how to predict / estimate data not available how to determine crude oil/reservoir fluid quality how to develop your own characterization program Various distribution models for property distribution of reservoir fluids Calculation of input parameters for various property predictive methods Minimum data on a petroleum fluid for property calculations How to estimate properties related to safety and environmental issues such as vapor pressure, flash point, volatility index, V/L ratio and distillation data.

How to estimate properties related to fluid flow such as pour point, cloud point, freezing point and wax appearance temperature.

Phase behavior of reservoir fluids and solid precipitation (asphaltene, wax and hydrate formation and their control methods).

How to estimate transport properties (viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusivity and surface tension)

effects of porous media on transport properties how to measure transport properties for reservoir fluids Solubility of gases in oils and water Use of speed of sound data to determine properties of petroleum fluids

Daily Time Table and Dates:

The course duration is 4 days from Monday June 11th through Thursday June 14th, 2012. Each day there are three sessions and each session is two hours with breaks between the sessions. Total number of lectures will be 24 hours.
