Identity of villages has been lost and they are denied by the city as unwanted. City underestimates the people and culture of these areas. These villages lack healthy living conditions with proper light and ventilation and growth. Villages are destroying themselves in lack of proper guidance and education. My study is concerned with exploring the role of an Urban Village in Delhi. My research is concerned about the quality of life of peoplelivinginanUrbanVillageandtheirexistenceinthecity. BACKGROUND Urban growth in India has faced an unexpected pressure and urbanization has left its impact on many sphere of our environment. Rising migration, major shifts to tertiary occupations and increasingstressonlimitedresourcesaresomeofthemanychallengeswhichwearewitnessing. This process of urbanization has left its impact on both urban and rural settlements. The nature of urban impact on rural settlements varies according to the kind of relations a village has with city and the response of its inhabitants to the surrounding developments. Broadly, three different situations of urbanimpactmaybedistinguished. Firstly, therearevillagesinwhichasizablenumberofpeoplehavesoughtemploymentfaroffcities. Insuchvillages, urbanemploymentitselfbecomesasymbolofhighersocialprestige. The villages not only lost their land but also their social and cultural bonds because of the sudden impositionofurbanenvironmentaroundthem.Thechangeinoccupationandlandusepatternwas largelyresponsibleforthesetransformationsbecausethatiswhatmadetheurbanvillagesviablein the city after their agricultural land had been acquired. Thus, from a primarily residential one, the land use changed to largely commercial or industrial or in some cases even residential for the purpose of renting out in order to generate income. Urban villages might talk to the city by forming links with their surrounding and further on with the city through development of activities that

would bring people into the village for some purpose or other. This could happen by starting small commercial or industrial enterprises that would cater to the needs of those in the surrounding areas e.g. computer market in Shakarpur, mangal bazaar in Laxmi Nagar etc, By providing rental accommodations to migrating and other people in their residences, e.g. in Shakarpur, Laxmi Nagar, Mandawali etc, By providing all the service class (i.e. peon, domestic servant, driver, security guard etc.) RELEVANCEOFTHESTUDY Theurbanvillageisarapidlytransformingunitaspressureofurbanizationhasledtorapid reproductionofanumberofalienactivitieswithinthesettlementintheabsenceofsufficient infrastructuralsupport.Thishasresultedinenvironmentaldegradationanddisorder.Asaresultthe urbanizedvillagesofDelhipresentapictureofdistress:astruggletofindanewidentityandstability intheirchangedenvironment.Thegrowthstrendstoexhibitbythemareareflectionontheneglect sufferedbythematthehandsoftheplanningauthoritiesandtheimplementingagencies. These settlements, caughtbetweenaruralandanurbanlifestyleneedspecialattentiontoharnesstheir resourcesandmanpower.Andtochannelizetheirgrowthindirectionswhichwouldbeprofitablefor thewholecity.Whiletheimpactofthecityonurbanvillageshasbeenstudiedbyvariousinstitutions and individuals, their response to this impact has not been considered important enough. Hence it hasbeenaonewayprocesswhereonlywhatthecityonurbanvillageshasdonetothevillagesis considered important .response of these settlements to this impact, its extent and nature can help to establish the role of the urban village in the city. And identify their resources so that their growth can be channelized in profitable direction. Though the urban villages form an important part of the city, their urban form and spatial characteristics have often been neglected in practice as well as in the various studies that have been conducted. The growth pressure of the city and growth within thesesettlementshasshapedthephysicalenvironmentofthesevillagesinacharacteristicsmanner. The study seeks to bring out the urban form and spatial characteristics of urban villages and to understand the role of urban villages and to understand role of internal and external factors responsible. Such commercial developments in urban villages become important determents of their urban form. Thus the scope of the study is confined to commercial activityandrentalaccommodationsinurbanvillages.
