Learning Objectives (2.5 points) Psychomotor Cognitive Affective Students will be able to successfully dribble the basketball down and back to the end of the basketball court using both left and right hand, and using proper cues while doing so. Students will be able to pass a written test on the proper cues for dribbling with a 70% or higher. Students will be able to demonstrate respect for classmates by respecting personal space and respect for other students.

Lesson Activities (5 points) Est. Time Activity Title Class Organization Class will be standing in a semi circle formation along the 3-point line of a basketball court. Here I will introduce the proper cues for dribbling technique of a basketball. Each student will be given a basketball and will line up on the sideline of the basketball court with an arms length between them. Students will Teaching Points Control the ball with finger tips (do not slap the ball with palm of hands) Keel dribble low and close to the body (dribble should not come up above waist) Head should be up and eyes forward (should not be looking down at the ball) Keep a controlled speed so not to lose control of the ball. Keep head up and eyes looking forward in the direction you are traveling in.

Introduction

Right/Left hand dribble

NEIU Physical Education Lesson Plan

then dribble down to the opposite end of the court using right hand, coming back to the start point using left hand Students will line up I the same formation on the sideline of the basketball court and dribble down and back. But this time instead of only dribbling with one hand, they will dribble down and back alternating hands, right, left, right, left, so on and so forth. In this activity there will be cones scattered around the basketball court. Students will spread out in a scatter formation around the gym. On the start of the game students will dribble around the gym using the right hand first and try to touch as many cones as possible in the gym in a 30 second time period. They will then repeat this activity and try to beat their own personal score. They will then switch and do so with the left hand.

Alternating dribble

Maintain a controlled speed so not to lose control of the ball. Keep head up and eyes looking forward in the direction you are traveling in. Keep dribble low and controlled while switching from right to left.

Keep head up to and eyes forward in direction of travel, to be sure not to run into other class mates. Touch each cone once, dont just stand between two cones and keep touching the same two cones.

Cone Dribble Activity

Lesson Modifications (Illness and/or Students with Disabilities) (2.5 points) Students who may have a physical disability could still dribble the ball but instead of walking/jogging up the court they could practice the dribbling in place, or while seated in a chair.

Other Considerations (2.5 points) Assessment Methods Assessment methods could be done on a check point system. The students could be observed dribbling the ball and be assessed by successfully completing a minimum cues given while dribbling.

Cones

Safety Considerations Students shoes should be tied Students should be aware of personal space while dribbling so not to run into each other. Be aware of other equipment in the gym such as, tables, chairs, soccer nets, equipment cages, etc.

Alternate Lesson/Plan B (e.g. Limited Students, Inclement Weather etc.) If there was not enough basketballs to go around for each student to have a ball, they could go in squads on the sideline and take turns doing the dribbling activities. If there is not enough cones to set up for the activity, students could then walk around the gym and give each other low fives in replacement of touching the cones.

Lesson Reflection (Pros and Cons of Activities, Teaching Performance) (5 points) I feel that the pros of this lesson are that each student is allowed to be activities with no time standing around (as long there is enough basketballs). Also in this lesson each student is able to work at their own pace while dribbling up and down the court. If they are more advanced they can walk or jog a little quicker, but if they are having trouble dribbling, they can walk and move a little slower up and down the court in order to focus better on the dribbling skill. Also I feel that there is a good progression in the lesson by first letting them just practice dribbling in a straight line up and down the court. Then once they have gotten a little practice the activity with the cones tests their ability to dribble with their head up and touch the cone while still keeping control of the basketball. Some of the cons of the lessons are that some students may still not be advanced enough even with the practice dribbling to be successful at the lead up game.
