Corinne Pennock Artifact Reflection

I have chosen this artifact for the Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge standard because it describes a competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession. The knowledge indicator that addresses this particular artifact and standard is: 4A.understands concepts used in the study of government and politics. The performance indicator that addresses this particular artifact and standard is: 4D.explains the basic concepts used in the study of government and politics (e.g., political socialization, representation, and authority). This specific standard is about knowing your content area based on central concepts, methods of inquiry, and content area literacy. Under this standard, a teacher must create an experience that is unique to students individually. Each student learns differently and these practices of teaching different students need to be based off of interactions in the midst of content area, pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice in the classroom. This artifact appropriately represents this standard in the fact that it specifically demonstrates knowledge of the content area. In this power point, I demonstrate that I know how a Roman Republic works and how it is structured. While using this artifact, I am constantly asking students questions to make sure that they are understanding and absorbing the information. This is helpful for students because it allows students to discuss the information and gives me a chance to give more details about the topic that may be missing off of the power point. This artifact demonstrates my growth and development as a teacher in that this artifact shows that I have the ability to retain and understand content and central concepts from my content area (social sciences). It shows my growth as an intellectual through my years at college and how my history classes have benefited my in learning more content that I can share with my students. It also demonstrates my development as a teacher in that I can create an unique learning experience for my students by tailoring my discussion to how they learn best. It also demonstrates that I can use technology in the classroom (this artifact was used on a Smart Board where I underlined and drew pictures on this artifact for the students) and how this can help aid my students learning of the content.
