Qualifying Criteria for the 2013 ITU World Championships

The Event
1. The Triathlon competition for the 2013 ITU World Championships will take place in London on 13th September for the Sprint Distance and 15th September for the Olympic Distance. 2. We can send up to ten male and ten female triathletes in each Age Group for both the Sprint and the Olympic Distance events. 3. Government funding will be made available for the fastest qualifier in each category, defined by age group, sex, and distance. This means the fastest male aged 40-44 at the Olympic distance, besides the fastest female aged 45-49 over sprint distance. 4. Each triathlete may receive up to 50% of the estimated total costs in advance from Government. The final amount required for each person will depend on the actual costs of transport and the standard of accommodation chosen. 5. All triathletes who represent Gibraltar must meet the qualifying and selection conditions that are set out below.

Qualifying Conditions
1. All triathletes must meet nationality, residence and other statutory requirements in order to represent Gibraltar in the 2013 ITU World Championships. 2. Competing triathletes must beat the following Qualifying Times, to be achieved in Time Trial on the GASA/Jimena Course, described below. Qualifying Times are detailed by Age Group, and must be obtained between 1st January and 28th July 2013, by triathletes wishing to qualify for either distance: Age Group 18-19 20-24 25-29 30-34 35-39 40-44 45-49 50-54 55-59 60-64 65-69 70-74 75-79 Male 2:25:00 2:14:00 2:16:00 2:19:00 2:24:00 2:25:00 2:25:00 2:31:00 2:46:00 2:49:00 2:59:00 3:14:00 3:51:00 Female 2:45:00 2:29:00 2:27:00 2:34:00 2:37:00 2:39:00 2:45:00 2:52:00 3:01:00 3:09:00 3:29:00 3:47:00 4:00:00

3. Age Group is defined by the triathletes age on 31 December 2013. 4. Competitors will be expected to attend competitive triathlons over the distance in which they will compete, in the six months preceding the Championships.

Selection Conditions
Meeting the Qualifying Conditions does not mean automatic selection. Triathletes must also satisfy the Triathlon Technical Committee with evidence of the following: a high performance standard in competitive triathlons; a willingness to compete in related disciplines, such as duathlon or running races, in order to improve as a triathlete, and not just to win prizes; a positive attitude to the sport of triathlon, and to fair competition; and a dedicated training programme, focussed on peaking in the Triathlon competition of the 2013 ITU World Championships.

The Triathlon Technical Committee reserves the right to consider other competitive performances in order to resolve selection issues.

The GASA/Jimena Course

This is the standard course that has been used to provide a comparable standard for local triathlon performances. It consists of the three parts: 1. A sea swim of standard distance, approximately 1500 metres, from the GASA to the Mediterranean Rowing Club and back, followed by a short run to a fixed point in GASA to simulate the Transition 1 of a triathlon. The clock will be stopped when the triathlete is dressed for a cycle, that is to say wearing a helmet and shirt and not a wetsuit, and has touched the object that stands in for a bicycle. This stage will normally take place on a Friday. 2. A cycle on a standard course, approximately 40 km, consisting of two lengths of a 20 km stretch of road between Jimena and Castellar. This stage will normally take place on the Sunday following the swim. Drafting will not be permitted. 3. A run on a standard distance, of approximately 10 km, immediately following the cycle, as in a standard triathlon. 4. The course time will be given by the official Timekeeper, and will consist of the total time of the swim, cycle and run. This will be compared against the Qualifying Times described above as the standard for qualification. 5. The specific courses used for swim, cycle and run may be amended to alternatives which, in the opinion of the Triathlon Technical Committee, provide a comparable level of difficulty to the courses described above. 6. The Triathlon Technical Committee will make every effort to schedule trials so as to accommodate the needs of individual triathletes, especially those who are based outside Gibraltar. All triathletes must bear their own transportation costs to and from trials. 7. Individual triathletes may attempt the course any number of times in order to secure qualification, though the Triathlon Technical Committee may consider all trials as indicators of a triathletes state of fitness.
