10

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal have mercy on us.

THE COLLECT
O God, the fountain of life, to a humanity parched with thirst you offer the living water that springs from the Rock, our Saviour Jesus Christ: stir up within your people the gift of your Spirit, that we may profess our faith with freshness and announce with joy the wonder of your love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

MINISTRY OF THE WORD FIRST READING

Isaiah 55.1-13

A reading from the book of the book of the Prophet Isaiah Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David. See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a ruler and commander of the peoples. Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations you do not know will come running to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you with splendor. Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 63.1-9

Response: My soul is a-thirst for you as in a dry and thirsty land. O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; my soul is athirst for you. My flesh also faints for you, as in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. So would I gaze upon you in your holy place, that I might behold your power and your glory................R Your loving-kindness is better than life itself and so my lips shall praise you.

I will bless you as long as I live and lift up my hands in your name. My soul shall be satisfied, as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips, ...............R When I remember you upon my bed and meditate on you in the watches of the night. For you have been my helper and under the shadow of your wings will I rejoice. My soul clings to you; your right hand shall hold me fast......................................R I Corinthians 10.1-13

SECOND READING

A reading from Pauls first letter to the Corinthians For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry. We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them didand in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. We should not test Christ, as some of them didand were killed by snakes. And do not grumble, as some of them didand were killed by the destroying angel. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you dont fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Praise to you O Christ, King of eternal glory. Praise to you O Christ, King of eternal glory. Jesus began | to proclaim, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven | has come near. Praise to you O Christ, King of eternal glory.

GOSPEL
A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 13.31-35

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you. He said to them, Go and tell that fox for me, Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed away from Jerusalem. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer after Communion God of mercy and forgiveness, may we who share this sacrament live together in unity and peace, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Reflections on the Readings Jesus Mission and Death, and Our Own Sometimes-Tragic Role Throughout Lent we are preparing ourselves to experience Jesus cross. This passage calls us to do so by considering whether our lives lead appropriately to that cross. Can we make sense of our lives as a part of the establishment of Gods kingdom in our world? Or are we frightened from our mission by the threats of earthly rulers and seductive forces? Moreover, if Jesus were to speak prophetically

to us today, what would his message be? How have we resisted Gods messages and kingdom because they dont suit our purposes? Paul refers to the church as a temple, as the dwelling of Gods Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). So how have we played the tragic role of Jerusalem in destroying the prophets? On the other hand, how have we recognized Gods messages and kingdom, and how can we continue to do so and thus make a difference in the world?
