Around Kelsall in 80 scarecrows
ORGANISERS of this years Kelsall Scarecrow Trail are aiming to make it the biggest and
best ever.
There will be dozens of fun, witty and downright ludicrous scarecrows displayed throughout
the village which makes for a really enjoyable walk following the trail and spotting the many
scarecrows along the way.
Dates coincide with the hugely popular Chester Folk Festival which is also based in the
village and attracts hundreds of extra visitors (Folk Festival Dates are 24-27 May)
This years theme is around the world in 80 scarecrows and for the rst time ever they are
offering local businesses based outside of Kelsall the opportunity to enter scarecrows to
boost fundraising (100% of funds raised go to Kelsall School) and grow the event.
The prize-winners are all announced at the Kelsall Primary Summer Fair Saturday 8th
June. Visit Twitter @kelsallcrows for more info

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL
NEWSLETTER
Public meeting date for
sheltered housing plans
SPECIAL Public Meeting Monday 29th April at 8pm in the main hall of the Community
Centre
The Parish Council invite local residents to come and present their views to the Councillors
about the revised planning application (Available at www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk Ref
13/01249/OUT) for the Land Rear of Trap Hill, Birch Heath Road, Tarporley.
This meeting will give residents more time to have their say than will be possible at the Open
Forum of the next Parish Council meeting. As this is in effect a new application, people need to
submit their comments to this plan, even if they commented on the previous one. These plans
are for a 35 dwelling sheltered housing scheme, with warden and communal facilities.
Parish councils annual meeting
THE Annual Meeting of the Parish Council
will be held on Monday 13th May at 7 pm
at the Community Centre, to which all
residents are invited to come and hear
the presentations of the annual report
and accounts, and an up-date about the
Tarporley Neighbourhood Plan. Please
come along.
In recognition of the recent changes in
Planning Law, and the pressure to build
more houses in Cheshire, the Parish
Council has prepared some guidelines
which it will use when considering planning
applications. The Parish Council knows
that when CWaC is deemed not to have a 5
year settlement boundary.
The Parish Council wants to inuence
developers, and preferably before a
developer submits its plans for planning
approval, so that any new development
ts the housing needs of the village; does
not damage the village infrastructure; is in
keeping with Tarporleys rural character and
brings sufcient benet to the community.
Items regarded as community benets for
example include increasing the parking
spaces in the centre of the village; trafc
lights onto the by-pass at the southern end
of the village, and improvements to the
primary school and local medical facilities.
Currently the Parish Council has 29 items
on its list. Copies of these Guidelines, an
Addendum to the Village Design Statement
and the List of Community Benet items
can be found on the Parish Council
web site www.tarporley.org.uk, under
publications, and are available from the
Clerk Tel 01829 733 496.

FINANCIAL Planning advice is about
taking care of all your financial needs
together with those of your family, but
the reality is that very few of us manage
our finances as best we might.
This is hardly surprising - the financial world is
complex and fast changing, with more and more
institutions no longer offering face to face financial
planning advice and many of the high street banks
simply referring you to a website.
Achieving a successful outcome often means
spending huge amounts of time researching the
choices and options available and yet most of us have
neither the time nor, it has to be said, the inclination
to make the most of what is on offer.
The simple way out of this dilemma is of course to
seek financial advice and sensibly many of us do just
that. The problem is that often, financial advice is too
narrow, addressing the question you have raised but
failing to see the bigger picture. For example, if you
ask for advice on investing tax-efficiently in an ISA
you will probably get it. What you dont get, however,
is a view on whether you would be better off putting
the money into your pension plan or reducing your
mortgage borrowings.
If you own or manage a business, you should expect
advice that extends seamlessly from your personal
finances to your business interests. This means, for
example, advice on the best approach to realising
the value of your ownership, both over the years
and when you come to implementing your exit
strategy. Aligned with your interests are those of your
employees so you will need someone who can also

SEEKING FINANCIAL PLANNING
I would expect my inancial adviser to be
professional, what came as a most pleasant
surprise was the personal touch and friendly
attitude I and my family received initially, and
still do in all our dealings with Carolyn. I rec-
ommend her unreservedly.

Advertorial
provide a tailored package of group benefits - ranging
from pensions to healthcare plans.
Your financial situation is unique so the core of
financial planning should be a personal service
and a long-term relationship with a chosen adviser
combining ongoing regular and comprehensive
reviews of your personal finances and a co-ordinated
or holistic plan of all aspects of your affairs. Rather
than sell you a financial product and never see
you again, a wealth manager should be on hand
throughout your life.
So where do you look? private banking services,
financial advisers, discretionary fund managers,
lawyers, tax planners and accountants all offer
facets of financial planning and wealth management
advice. In making a choice the real test is whether
your wealth manager has the necessary skills
and experience to
understand your
needs, create a bespoke
solution and provide a
high level of advice and
specialist services either
from within or outside their practice.
Whatever criteria you apply in making your choice
is of course subjective, but the key issue is ultimately
whether you feel confident that your chosen
adviser will help manage your wealth in a proactive,
professional manner.

Bunbury Parish Plan prizes
THE Bunbury Parish Plan Steering Group would like to thank everyone who participated
in answering the questionnaires and we are very pleased with the response which is
approximately 50% of the number distributed.
The data has been collated and we are working hard to extract the information that will
form the Parish Plan. We are hoping to have a display in The Pavilion on Village Day,
to give an insight of the answers we received, followed later in the year by a meeting to
discuss the results/way forward more fully.
We would like to thank the prize donors, once again, for their generosity and also
everyone who provided space in their premises for the collection boxes, which helped
us achieve such a successful result. Winners of the rafe were, Youth Questionnaire

AN artist who takes
inspiration from the many
varied surfaces to be found
in Tarporley has put her
work on display in the town.
Estella Scholes is a
contemporary artist and
printmaker based in Crewe.
Recently she has been an
informal Artist in Residence
at the new Tarporley Art
Gallery.
Now, her work is being
exhibited at the gallery until
8th May
Estella said: I am not a
landscape painter, but my
inspiration comes from
observing the colours,
surface textures and shapes
of incidental things found
within the landscape, be it
beachcombing nds, the
overgrowth on ancient hill
fort defences, or the many
and varied surfaces to be
found along Tarporley High
Street. The little things we
walk on and through, which
are an essential part of the
bigger picture!
I prefer to let my
observations linger in
the mind for a while, until
they emerge into art work
as an essence of what I
have seen. I never work
directly from photographs,
although photography
plays an important part
in this editing process.
Members of the public who
have encountered me,
camera lens inches from
the pavement, have asked
if I was from the council. A
selection of these images
has been reproduced as
greeting cards.
Tarporley is a very well
ordered, tidy place, with
many textured layers of
history on its streets and
buildings. I have chosen to
reect this by working with
simplied textural shapes
to complement small details
either painted, or hand-
printed, directly from natural
forms.
Estellas work has been
widely exhibited, and can be
found in public and private
collections as far away as
Norway.

hair removal, laser or electrolysis?
A . Laser can generally only be used on clients with fair skin and dark hair. This
is because laser targets pigment and so it will not be effective on light coloured
hair as the hairs do not have any pigment and if skin is dark then the laser may
cause loss of skin pigment. Electrolysis can be used on any hair colour or
skin colour because it targets the dermal papilla, the area from where the hair
grows, and pigment does not inuence the treatment. Sometimes laser and
electrolysis can be combined, we often have clients attend for electrolysis
treatment to remove fair or white hairs that laser has not treated.

Q. What are the best anti-
ageing ingredients to look for
in skin care creams?
A. As you will probably realise by
now, I think the best anti-ageing
ingredient is sunscreen to prevent
long term, low-level exposure
to UV rays that are present in
daylight. Vitamins A,C and E
formulated for topical application
are also highly effect. However,
scientists at University of Reading
have just discovered that peptides
(fragments of proteins) really do
work as anti-wrinkle agents in skin
care products. To nd out how
peptides work and get information
about the Dermalogica products
that contain peptides visit the

Nialls art
on show
Tarporley High School is
proud to show off this very
high standard of work by Niall
Harrison who has recently
completed this painting of
Jessica Ennis for his GCSE
Art coursework. It has taken
a grand total of 47 long hours
to complete! This painting
will be on display at the end
of school year Summer Art
Show. Niall is a member
of West Cheshire Athletics
Club and the Olympic athlete
is a big inspiration to him.
Niall recently won an award
at West Cheshires annual
presentation evening for his
hard work over the winter
training season.
Science students get industrial
Year 8 students visited the
Museum of Science and
Industry in Manchester.
Particular highlights were the
underground Manchester
exhibition where students
enjoyed sitting on antique
toilets and walking down a
life size cross section of a
Victorian sewer. In the air and
space hall pupils rode on a
simulator and studied how
technology changed the way
we travel. Without doubt the
most popular part of the day

& SIXTH FORM COLLEGE
Toe-tapping Tarporley
The school recently hosted a musical day featuring the Band, Samba, Pop choir and Music
for Life. The school band top and tailed the concert with four contrasting items displaying
some lovely improvisations. Then came the super samba in which all toes were tapping, to
be followed by three numbers from the pop choir.
80 KS3 and 4 students took part and had a tremendous day. Alastair McWilliam, director
of Music for Life led the band, but the students also benetted from the guidance of our
ute teacher (Miss Phillips), Guitar teacher (Mr Reaney), drum teacher (Mr Woodward) and
keyboard teacher (Mr Collings).
was the experiment! section,
where pupils could try a
number of hands on practical
activities, including lifting a
mini using only their hands.
Other memorable exhibitions
included an artists use of milk
teeth to make a statue, and
the Connecting Manchester
section where pupils could
view such ancient technology
as the squarial and Sega
Mega-drive!

Bad weather fails to dampen disco passion
THE Passion for Disco event held at The Barbour Institute in March raised an incredible
2208.68 for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. The numbers for the 50p sale and plant
stall were down from last year due to the bad weather but for those who did manage to get
there some great bargains were to be had.
The two Nia dance tness classes were well attended and the main hall was turned into
a school disco special thanks to David Tanswell for the loan of his disco lights and to
Graham Marsden for setting the
stalls up..
Also grateful thanks go to the Nia
Flacca ladies who ran the caf and
to everyone else who helped set
up on the day, contributed or made
cakes.

Tarporley frefghters say
thank you for your support
Fireghters, re cadets and helpers would like to thank the people of Tarporley
for their generosity following their recent successful charity car wash.
Drivers turned out in force to support The Fire Fighters Charity while reghters,
re cadets and teams of helpers with their buckets and sponges raised money
for the cause as well as handing out road safety advice at Tarporley community
re station.
Chairman of the Fire Fighters Charity and Deputy Chief Fire Ofcer Mark Cashin
said; It is testament to the support we have from the public when events such
as this show how generous people can be as a magnicent total of over 312
was raised on the day from local residents. It costs over 9 million every year
to keep The Fire Fighters Charity running, and with no government funding, it is
completely reliant on donations from the general public and re community.

TWO dogs, Jim and Jake, and the sheep,
geese and chickens who live with them on a
smallholding in Clotton are helping primary
school children with their English lessons
while they learn about life
in the countryside.
The series of six
Brookeld Books, written
by Alison Parkin and
featuring Jim, Jake
and all their friends,
are each full of colour
photographs, poems,
activities, rhymes, funny
stories and interesting
facts about animals and
the countryside. More importantly though,
the Brookeld Books work as an educational
resource and revision tool for primary school
children working their way through Key
Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 English.
The six books follow the National
Curriculum for each of the six years of
primary school education. This means that
topics like punctuation,
phonics, grammar and
spelling are introduced in
the same order as they
are in school. However,
the words and pictures
in the Brookeld Books
are so entertaining that
readers will enjoy them
whatever standard
of English they have
reached.
What is great about the
books is that they apply what is being taught
to children in the classroom to real language
describing what a real bunch of lovable
animals get up to on a real little farm, said
Alison.
The way they are written means that every
time a child picks up and enjoys reading
a Brookeld Book and
looking at the photos, they
are actually continuing
their learning, almost
without realising it.
Noel Nicholas is
responsible for capturing
the dogs, sheep, chickens
and geese on camera
and with each of the six
books.
Brookeld Books 1 and 2, which cover Key
Stage 1, are already available to buy from
the website together with a Colouring Book
featuring scenes from Brookeld which will
appeal to all ages, even adults. The four
books covering the four years of Key Stage
2 English will be available shortly.
Having lived very locally for most of their
lives, Alison and Noel bought Brookeld
together in December
2010.Since then, they
have been adding pets
and livestock on a regular
basis as well as growing
vegetables and planting
fruit trees and bushes
around the gardens and
paddocks.
Everyone can keep
up with Alisons news
and Noels photos
through the Blog
on the Brookeld Books website, www.

Whodunnit at the castle
PECKFORTON Castle is the venue for murder, mystery performances this
month.
Murder Most Foul Theatre company present Bada Bing Bada Boom! on
3rd, 4th and 24th May for three evenings of mystery, intrigue, detection and
suspense as they invite you to solve the crime and catch the killer.
The mystery is set in 1931. America is in the grip of prohibition. Even
Chicagos greatest gangster is nding it difcult to make a buck. Will he do
any better in England? Not if Ma Hennessy and her hoods have anything to do
with it.
From 7pm till late for 45, you can enjoy a beautiful silver service, three-
course meal in Peckforton Castle. Between each course the action, murder
and mystery unfolds. As detectives you can interrogate the suspects but you
must choose your questions wisely and beware, the suspects are not always
what they seem.
Clare Molyneux, Artistic Director at Molyneux and Mother Murder Mysteries
said: Our murder mystery evenings are a glamorous affair that provide an
evening of excitement, entertainment and intrigue.
Ive been to murder mysteries before. They seem to be a lot of running
about, making a show of yourself with a silly hat on whilst eating terrible food.
Ours are different. Using professional actors and award-winning

Peckforton and Beeston WI
Keith Cotton gave us a very interesting talk in April about Tower Clock
making and repairing. He was apprenticed to J B Joyce & Co. in
Whitchurch, the oldest tower clock manufacturers in the world. Clocks
were at rst probably very small but gradually got larger and were put
on church towers not originally with dials but just with a pealing bell on
the hour. Gradually dials were introduced and individual areas even had
their own time until the coming of the railways when Greenwich Mean Time was introduced so
that timetables could be made, in order to run the trains throughout the country. We also learnt
about one handed clocks, electric and automatic time altering and winding, which now saves
someone having to climb the towers so often! We next meet on 1st May when we will discuss the
Resolutions and have a talk about The King and I by Norma Walmsley, you are very welcome to
join us.
