DEAD POETS SOCIETY (1989)

REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. What two pedagogical approaches do you see reflected in the introductory part of the movie? What learning/teaching theories do you see implicit in each of these approaches? How do you think the teacher and the students felt with each different type of pedagogical experience? Which approach or approaches- any-do you remember seeing applied in your school day? Do you remember how you and your classmates felt with your teachers approaches? 5. Looking forward, how important do you think theory is for your teaching practice? DEVELOPMENT 1. We saw two types of pedagogical approaches, the older teacher taught by repetition I mean he believe in behaviorism that teacher reflected the positivist school. He belongs to the old paradigm. He thinks if you repeat and repeat students will learn. He believes in mechanical pedagogy. He teaches to memorize this is a bad method. Mr. Keating belongs to the new paradigm. The approach is cognitive psychology. Being that it approach says students have to develop their formal thinking (formal thought) I mean students have to think and make decisions they have to develop their thinking and as we saw Mr. keating did it. He make them think by themselves he stimulates them to think and analyze new points of views, new things and he motivated them to think. Mr. keating also depart from the previous knowledge of their students. This paradigm says teachers come to the class not to teach they come to help students to learn. Learning is a process. It does not occur in an instant. Teachers have to create a friendly atmosphere in order learners feel comfortable and confident. Teachers have to differ from one situation and other; they have to see the context they are. 2. I mentioned two approaches: the positivist school and the cognitive psychology The approach of the positivist school belongs to educational psychology theory and the approach of cognitive psychology belongs to educational psychology theory too. 3. Older teachers class: - I think with the older teacher students felt boring, uncomfortable, conformist, dismotivated, lazy, and inactive for the next reasons: Boring. - The teacher talked and talked and he did everything. Uncomfortable.- Being that the teacher repeated a nd repeated students did not learn anything so they feel uncomfortable because they are afraid teacher ask a question. Conformist.- the teacher is not demanding so they become conformist. Inactive.- Teacher did almost everything in the class. He has to make them to think.

-On the other hand the older teacher felt the best in the classroom. He thinks students do not know and he thinks he has to do everything in the class in order they learn. Mr. keatings class: -Mr. keatings students felt confident, motivated, interested, happy, active, comfortable. Being that Mr. keating created a friendly atmosphere and he also created the conditions to have an active, interesting and active class. -I think Mr. keating felt very happy to see his students participate in all the class. 4. When I was at school my teachers belonged to the old paradigm, behaviourism. I remember boring classes, my teachers just talked and said exam the next class or sometimes you had to give a speech about the class and I felt dismotivated and I just gave the speech to do out bit the homework. 5. Theory is very important for my teaching practice because I need a framework to know how to help my students to learn. Theory is useful to improve each day on the way I teach. Theory makes me see my weak points and good points in order to get better. Teachers intentions and actions, learning process itself, individual personalities of the students and their context, culture, the learning environment and other aspects. The theory help teachers to connections between these different aspects I have just said in order to make good decisions about how to help students to learn. Obviously everything from a framework.
