Control Logical Channels
BCCH (DL) Broadcast Control Channel System control information [Cell identity, uplink interference level] PCCH (DL) Paging Control Channel Paging information [CN originated call location of cell unknown] CCCH (UL, DL) Common Control Channel Control information [initial access (RRC connection request), cell update] DCCH (UL, DL) Dedicated Control Channel Control information RRC exists [RAB, MR, and HO]
Transport Channels
Common Transport Channels
BCH (DL) Broadcast Channel Carry: BCCH, No user information. Transmission: Entire cell. Power: High power. Bit Rate: low, fixed. PCH (DL) Paging Channel Carry: PCCH, No user information. Transmission: Entire Cell. FACH (DL) Forward Access Channel Carry: Control information (initial access) [BCCH-CCCH-DCCH] Short user packets [CTCH-DTCH]. Transmission: Entire cell or part of it (beam-forming antenna). Properties: Open loop power control (slow power control). RACH (UL) Random Access Channel Carry: Control information (initial access) [CCCH-DCCH] Short user packets [DTCH]. Transmission: Entire cell. Properties: Limited size data field, collision risk, and Open loop power control (slow power control). When UL RACH DL FACH. DSCH (DL) Downlink Shared Channel Carry: Dedicated control information [DCCH] Dedicated short user packets [DTCH]. Properties: Shared by several users, and always has an associated DCH to provide power control. CPCH (UL) Common Packet Channel Carry: Long user data packets [DCCH] Long control packets [DTCH]. Properties: Contention based RACH, always associated with a dedicated channel on the downlink for power control.
Properties: Fast rate change (frame-by-frame basis), fast power control, use of beam forming, and support of SHO.
Physical Channels
Not Associated with Transport Channels
CPICH (DL) Common Pilot Channel Transmits pre-defined bit sequence in the downlink with 30kbps (SF=256).It allows UEs to measure the cell power. PICH (DL) Paging Indicator Channel This is associated with S-CCPCH to which a PCH channel is mapped. It carries paging indicator that inform UEs that they need to decode the information of the PCH channel. P-SCH & S-SCH (DL) Primary & Secondary Synchronization Channel Used for cell search and is the first channel that UE needs to know. Allow synchronization at frame and code sequence of P-CCPCH. Just after the switch is on, the UE can decode only the P-SCH and S-SCH if it is on a covered area. The UE synchronize itself at the slot on the P-SCH and at the frame level on the S-SCH and retrieves a group of 8 Scrambling codes. Then, the UE tests the 8 scrambling codes on the CPICH to find the SC of the cell. Next, to read the system information, the UE decodes the BCH channel. Finally, the UE selects the best cell. AICH (DL) Acquisition Indicator Channel It is used for PRACH response.

HS-PDSCH (DL) High Speed-Physical Downlink Shared Channel R99: PDSCH Data information with fixed SF=16 (up to 15 per UE) Supports QPSK modulation and 16-QAM in option
HS-SCCH (DL) High Speed-Shared Control Channel Control information for only one UE with fixed SF=128 3GPP specifies a maximum of 4 HS-SCCH/cell, then up to 4 UEs/TTI HS-DPCCH (UL) High Speed-Dedicated Physical Control Channel Control information (ACK/NACK and CQI) with fixed SF=256

Scheduling Channels
E-AGCH (DL) E-DCH Absolute Grant Channel E-AGCH carries E-DCH absolute grant. It indicates to the E-DCH UE (either individually or per group) what their resources (absolute UL resources limitation) are. E-RGCH (DL) E-DCH Relative Grant Channel E-RGCH carries E-DCH relative grants. It is a dedicated channel for the Node B involved in the EDCH active set. This channel allows each node B dealing with E-DPDCH to reduce the UE emitted power in order to avoid radio interferences.
