About the Chamber

rom its historical roots as a Native American gathering spot, Camdenton has grown into a vibrant, connected, educated and talent-driven community. Nestled on the Big and Little Niangua arms of the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks, Camdenton is a great place to live, work and to vacation. Camdenton is the county seat of Camden County. The French are responsible for the naming of the region "AuxArcs," pronounced, "Ozark." Early white settlement began in 1827 and the County of Old Kinderhook, later renamed Camden County, was established in 1841. The Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is now located in the historic Willmore Lodge, the largest visitors center at the Lake, just northwest of Bagnell Dam. About the Chamber

The Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is managed by a Board of Directors, elected by its approximately 550 members, and is comprised of 15 volunteer business members from throughout the community. The Executive Director is responsible for day-today operations and reports directly to the Board. The benefits of Chamber membership are numerous. Some benefits will be more important to you that others. The main benefits though are universal. Chamber membership conveys credibility and stability to your customers. About the Chamber

The Lake of the Ozarks West Chamber of Commerce represents the Westside of the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks along highway 5. The cities of Laurie, Sunrise Beach, Gravois Mills and the Greenview area are represented by the Lake of the Ozarks West Chamber of Commerce, though we have over 450 members from all around the Lake, state and region representing businesses of all types. The Westside is a wonderful place to visit or to live as it is growing at a rapid rate, but still maintains that small town feel and slower pace of life so you can enjoy your time on the Westside. Many infrastructure improvements are happening now with many more planned for the near future. Come for a vacation or join all the people who have already decided to live here on the Westside. The Lake of the Ozarks West Chamber of Commerce represents over 450 members, managed by a Board of Directors comprised of twelve area leaders who volunteer their time and talent. The Lake Area A Captivating History
It's a great place to live, work and play

In 1912, when a Kansas City businessman first suggested damming the Osage River, he probably did not realize that his original idea would be the spark that would, over the next 100 years, turn the area into the Midwests premier vacation destination. Although that Kansas City businessman never realized his dream in 1929 Union Electric, St. Louis, purchased the project and construction began on a water-powered electric generating station that would in time be known as Bagnell Dam. The largest project of its kind in the United States, at that time, it employed nearly 20,000 men at a time when the rest of the country was suffering through the Great Depression. The dam holds back 600 billion gallons of water is one-half mile long and rises 148 feet high from the bedrock on which it sits. The dam houses eight generators capable of producing more than 500 million kilowatt hours of electricity and carries an 18-foot wide two-lane highway on its top. The Lake is 92 miles long, has 1,150 miles of shoreline and is more than 100 feet deep at its deepest point. When at full pool the surface water level stands at approximately 660-feet above sea level.

The Lake Area - A Premier Playground

Although the original dam is still in operation and is used to generate electricity on a daily basis, it was the huge lake behind the dam that proved to be the biggest economic boon for mid-Missouri. The area quickly became a favorite vacation spot for vacationers and in the 1960s
One of the oldest mountain ranges on earth, the Ozark Mountains are actually made up of two mountain ranges, the St. Francis and the Ouachita Mountains, and the highland plateau that surrounds them. The Ozark range lies mainly in Missouri with a smaller section that takes in the northern most counties of Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. The Lake of the Ozarks region has elevations from 689 feet above sea level at Lake Ozark to nearly 1,100 feet above sea level at Camdenton. The birdlife in the Lake Area is amazing with the thousands of ruby-throated hummingbirds that summer in the area and the hundreds of American bald eagles that winter near Bagnell Dam being especially popular. Where the Lake Begins

Although business was underway directly west of Bagnell Dam even before construction of the hydroelectric plant was complete, Lake Ozark did not officially become a city until the 1960s. Today, Lake Ozark is a small bustling city that is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds. The recent opening of a large shopping center featuring national retailers as well as the availability of prime retail space along a two-mile extension of the Horseshoe Bend Parkway (Missouri Highway 242) promises an even brighter future for the small town.

The Hub City

Built in the 1920s for the specific purpose of serving as the county seat of Camden County, the city of Camdenton was the result of a brainstorm by two local men. Because of its location and designation as the county seat, Camdenton grew quickly and by the mid-30s was the site of more than 60 homes and 30 businesses as well as a couple of churches and a school and the new city even had water, sewer and electric service. Today, the city is governed by a mayor and Board of Aldermen and has a full staff of employees including police, fire, airport, park, utility and street departments.

The City of Laurie, Missouri began in 1937 when a man named William Laurie bought an old building along Missouri Highway 5 to operate as a grocery store and filling station. In 1961, Laurie became an incorporated city and has remained a premier shopping and business district for Westsiders ever since. Today Laurie is a small city governed by a Mayor and Board of Aldermen. The city is divided into two wards with two aldermen elected from each ward.

One of the few towns in the Lake Area that existed before Bagnell Dam was built, Linn Creek was a major port on the Osage River. But, when Union Electric made the decision to build a hydroelectric plant and flood hundreds of miles of Ozark valleys, Linn Creeks days were numbered. The Heart of the Lake of the Ozarks

Built near the site of the former town of Zebra, Osage Beach spans both sides of the Grand Glaize Arm of Lake of the Ozarks. In 1935, residents of the area petitioned to have the name of the post office changed from Zebra to Osage Beach, but no official boundaries for the town were formulated. Then in a special election in 1965, voters approved a final incorporation of the area into the City of Osage Beach. Built along one of the best boating and fishing arms of the Lake and with the states largest state park bumping up against the city limits, Osage Beach is the most populous of the Lake Area towns. Governed by a mayor and board of aldermen, today Osage Beach offers citywide sewer and water services as well as a police department, ambulance service, two airports, two public parks, a fullyequipped hospital and medical center, dozens of national retailers, lodging facilities and numerous locally owned businesses.

Like many of the cities in the Lake Area, Sunrise Beach began as nothing more than a general store used by the residents of the surrounding countryside. Built along Missouri Highway 5, the City of Sunrise Beach was the brainchild of a Springfield-based development company who decided to build a few roads and plat lots and acreages just north of the future site of the Hurricane Deck Bridge Soon other businesses and homes were being built in the area and in 1932 the U.S. Postal Service built a post office on the site. In 1954, the town was incorporated and a Board of Trustees was appointed. Today, Sunrise Beach is a growing community of businesses, civic organizations, shops, schools, churches and other amenities governed by a Board of Trustees.

Village of Four Seasons

Started as homes within the realm of the Four Seasons Development Company, the Village of Four Seasons was one of the last towns in the Lake Area to become incorporated, in 1987. Like the rest of the Lake Area the Village of Four Seasons grew by leaps and bounds throughout the 1980s and 90s and today one of the most attractive towns in the area. Governed by a Board of Trustees, the city is funded by a two-cent sales tax charged at businesses within the village the city offers a wide range of amenities to its residents.

Morgan County
Morgan County was formed from a part of Cooper County in 1833. It encompasses 597.63 square miles dotted by farms and small towns and was named for Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War general. The first courthouse was a log building that was later replaced by a rectangular, two-story brick building, then in 1887 the voters agreed to have a new more dignified building built and that courthouse is still in use today.

Camden County
Camden County encompasses 655.2 square miles, or 419,330 acres, of wooded hills and deep valleys dotted with small towns. Originally formed as the County of Kinderhook in 1841, the area was renamed Camden County just two years later. The county was originally named after Whig Party candidate Martin Van Buren who was called by the nickname Old Kinderhook during his 1836 campaign, however after Van Buren fell out of favor, residents of the county petitioned the state legislature for permission to rename the county after Englands Earl of Camden. The most prosperous county in the Lake Area, Camden County is made up of small towns that thrive primarily on a tourist-based industry. Camden County also is the location of more than onehalf of the 40,000 summer homes owned by Midwesterners at Lake of the Ozarks. Several multi-million dollar resorts and hotels are located in the county as are several upscale shoreline residential developments.

Miller County
Miller County was first settled in 1807 by pioneers from Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. It became an official county in 1837 and was named for Missouri Governor John Miller. Miller County covers some 592.6 square miles with the county seat at Tuscumbia. A land of steep hills and wide valleys, Miller County is dotted with small towns and the tourist-oriented cities that border the Lake of the Ozarks. Miller County is primarily agriculturally-based and is well known for its turkey farms. In fact, Miller County is home to more turkey farms than any other single county in the country.

In 2012, U.S. News and World Report gave the Camdenton R-III district a bronze medal for excellence as one of the Best Top High Schools in the Nation. This year the district was recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in America by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. The district has also received the Distinction in Performance Award from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for the past 17 years. Camdenton is the Lakes largest and most diverse district in academics, athletics and extracurricular offerings. Its enrollment continues to climb with a Sept. 2012 total enrollment of 4,309 students in nine separate buildings and the district has 677 employees. In September 2012 Superintendent Brent Depe convened a community panel to formulate an updated vision and mission statement for School of the Osage District to raise expectations to a higher standard and to commit the district to raising current and future generations of students to experience success. The vision was given the title, All in! All Osage! The panel also updated its mission statement to serve as a framework for the entire district and to act as a filter and review tools for planning, funding, program development and deployment. Improvements to the curriculum have also been made to include a high school honors program with the addition of weighted courses starting with the freshman class. The additional grade point rewards students who pursue more rigorous coursework and allows them to stand out on college applications. The School of the Osage R-II is classified as Accredited with Distinction in PerformanceHigh Level. Lake-area residents and visitors can count on Lake Regional Health System for comprehensive medical care. From its state-of-the-art hospital to its network of medical clinics, cardiac and rehab therapy sites, home health care and three retail pharmacies, Lake Regional Health System offers a range of services to meet your health care needs. Since it was built in the 1930s, residents and visitors have given Lake of the Ozarks many nicknames. In the beginning it was known as The Great Osage Project, then because of its serpentine shape it was called The Magic Dragon. Today, as the second busiest tourist destination in the state it is often simply referred to as The Lake. But no matter what you call it, the Lake of the Ozarks is a Midwestern Mecca of vacation and recreational opportunities. In fact, the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau Annual Conversion Study showcases just how popular it is. According to the most recent study, the top 10 reasons visitors come to the Lake are: first shopping then boating, fishing, two state parks, events, mini-golf, group meetings, go-karts, caves and local parks, respectively. So no matter what you call it, Lake of the Ozarks is a haven of recreational and tourism opportunities. In the Lake Area, there are 6,700-plus lodging accommodations including family-oriented resorts, nationally known hotel and motel chains, condominiums, detached rental houses, bed and breakfasts, RV parks and campgrounds, cabins, houseboat rentals and apartments. And, there is a variety of culinary experiences available including 200-plus restaurants, with 50 or more on the shoreline for accessibility for the boating public. Seventy-three percent of all visitors come to the Lake just to shop the 300-plus retail outlets and 50-plus antique and consignment shops and art galleries in the area. There are large shopping centers offering name-brand items at discount prices, such as Osage Beach Premium Outlets, and smaller shopping centers like The Landing on Main Street and the Bagnell Dam Strip. Of course, one of main reasons visitors come to the Lake is the water itself. At 40-percent, boating is the second most popular activity. The marine dealers offer all types of watercraft from yachts to canoes. There are a plethora of watercraft rental businesses and several cruise lines. Fishermen have 1,150 miles of shoreline and 54,000-acres of water surface to access year-round. Fish species include largemouth bass, spotted bass, black and white crappie, blue catfish, channel catfish, flathead catfish, white bass, hybrid stripers, paddlefish, walleye, bluegill and smallmouth bass.
