Summary - Declan ODwyer is an Irish, drug and alcohol brain damaged, former rock musician whose chemical abuse has left him in a heavy fog every morning as he struggles to get through his days. His only child, the lively Brid who lived most of her life in Dublin with her deceased mother but now living outside Chicago, has taken him in and she never lets him forget his past life and the neglect of her and her mother in her own colorful and amusing fashion. Declan daily banters with his AA friends and his grandson Michael idolizes him. Michael begs him every day to take him to Ireland. Brid and Michael are invited to her cousin's wedding in the small village Declan is from. This is their last relative there and so they plan to go and Declan is scheduled to stay with friends for the two weeks. Then Brid injures a leg in an accident. Reluctantly she allows Declan to accompany Michael to Ireland. It is only to fulfill the promise to her son that she allows this. Declan struggles to remember at first but with Michael's help he gets by and meets a young father, Pat McCahill who lost two of his three children to illness and the two become friends. Declan agrees to go with Pat to the Marian Shrine at Knock to pray for Pat's third remaining child who is very sick. Michael goes missing the night before and after a frantic search Declan finds him by the ocean waiting for him to find him. The final scene is Pat and Declan having tea in Pat's home. It is their last night and Michael joins them as Pat and Declan pay a slow reel together to the dancing shadows behind them.
