The Technology Module Concept

Today, setting machines up at the press of a button is no longer a utopian idea. Modern machines must be able to produce economically even with small production runs and frequent changeover of batches. This means that setting up the machine for different products must be carried out easily and with less time. Technology Modules with intelligent servo drive technology make this possible. This can take the place of mechanical components that consume a great deal of time and effort to design and manufacture. Their disadvantages are numerous: If the product to be manufactured is changed, the machine setter is faced with the laborious and lengthy task of manually resetting the machine using wrenches and other tools. This can result in relatively long machine down times and increased costs. Baumller's Technology Modules with their modern servo drive technology offer a high level of flexibility due to the elimination of mechanical components offering numerous benefits; ! a high level of flexibility ! great scope for saving costs ! increasing production quantities. Basic concepts for all the Technology Modules Baumller presents a growing library of software modules known as "Technology Modules". These gather together all of Baumller's experience with highly productive machines from a wide variety of industry sectors.

Each Technology Module is matched and perfectly adapted to carrying out machine functions of fundamental importance. Each Technology Module is used to acquire and evaluate all the local encoders and sensors and to carry out complete control of the desired function. To connect several Technology modules together, Baumller offers the CANsync synchronised field bus system. Using this field bus allows you to replace mechanical line shafts with a synchronous field bus system benefiting the user with improved cost and performance. Virtual Master as the Advantage of all Technology Modules In machines that are driven decentrally without a mechanical line shaft, the individual drives are synchronised to a virtual master. The result is that the relative movements are carried out with greater precision than with a real master. The virtual master generates set-point values that do not deviate at all from the theoretical ideal form. The undesirable speed variations that always occur with every real master reference axis no longer exist. When operating with a virtual master, the master uses a clock signal to synchronise all the slaves at the same time. This synchronisation avoids transient errors that would otherwise occur resulting in drives operating at incorrect set-point values at the same time. Fine Interpolation for Perfectly smooth Motion Control The system transfers set-point

values via the CANsync at a synchronisation interval of between 1 and 8 ms, dependent on the user requirement and the length of the field-bus cable. The servo drive unit (V-controller ) with its cycle time of only 62.5 s, is one of the fastest on the market. This means that in the case of a 1 ms change in setpoint value, the servo drive unit can generate 16 finely graduated intermediate setpoint values by means of fine interpolation. This significantly improves the uniformity of motion and dramatically reduces the following error. Cam Profile Technology Module The Cam Profile Technology Module replaces the cam transmission and mechanical cam disks, which are still present in many machines, with powerful electronic servo drives.

Mechanical Cam Profile

How it works The electronic cam disk is controlled via a master axis. Every point in the electronic cam profile's memory has its equivalent point in the master axis position. The profile memory contains the position interpolation points of the cam profile in table form.

Elektronic Cam Profile

Cam Profile with real or virtual Master axis The cam profile can be controlled via a mechanical master axis. Various encoder types are available for acquiring the master axis position. The encoder is then coupled mechanically to the master axis. The system acquires the encoder position via an encoder input on the Technology Module. Every master axis position is related to a position of the cam follower or slave axis. The slave axis follows the master axis with the profile that is stored in the profile memory. The resulting transmission corresponds to that of two machine modules mechanically coupled with one shaft. The cam profile can also be controlled by a virtual master. The system transfers the position of the virtual master axis via the CANsync field bus system. Generating Profiles on the PC You can easily and conveniently generate the cam profile on your PC under Windows. The profile of the cam disk is generated graphically using WinBASS . You only need to enter a few points of the curve on which the system carries out spline or linear interpolation. Activation of a digital input starts the movement with the stored profile and processes it at the defined speed.This function is typically used in cases where a drive has to execute a complex motion profile as a result of an event, e.g. when a light barrier gives a start signal. Feedback systems The system supports the following feedback systems for the motor position and for the real master axis: incremental encoders, resolvers or highresolution Sincos encoders. With Sincos encoders, the maximum precision that can be achieved is 2,097,152 increments per revolution. Changing the cam profile online Experience gathered from production is used to continuously optimise electronic cam profiles. This obviates the need for timeconsuming testing using mechanical cam disks. You can simply carry out changes

Cam-operated switch The software cam-switch technology function is available on the cam profiler. When the cam profile has reached a specific position, it is possible to start an action. This can be the start of a welding procedure, for example. Once a specific position has been left, the system ends the action again. Users can use WinBASS to freely define the point at which this is to take place and can change it at any time. Users can parameterise up to 32 cam-switches. Electronic Clutch In some applications, it can be of benefit not to start the cam profile until a user-defined master axis angle is reached this is known as clutching-in. Cam profile with registration control In the case of processing stations that are distributed along a web, the register controller ensures high-

precision positioning of the drives to the printing image. The register controller enables all axis to be in registration and to guarantee for example that the printing images are in register. The determined compensation is updated in the period and affects the transmission ratio of an electronic transmission. Networking using CAN You can easily integrate the cam disk technology module into a group of interconnected machines using the CANsync field bus system. CANsync is based on the CAN standard. An additional hardware signal makes possible a real-time synchronisation capability of 1-8 ms with a transient jitter of 1 us. In this way, the cycle time does not depend on the number of axes. Applications The Cam Profile Technology Module can be used for many applications in which simple positioning using a drive is no longer sufficient. The cam

profile is synchronised to the master axis. That means the system can always carry out the product processing, such as punching or piercing at exactly the same position regardless of the speed of the master axis. The Cam Profile Technology Module software is intended for the Omega Driveline hardware. This is a userprogrammable closed-loop control card with IEC 1131-3 PLC functionality. It can be installed with the servo drive in the standard controller mounting space provided on all Baumller power units or power modules of the BMS System.
