SPIRITUAL SPONSORSHIP The unborn baby you have been praying for is already 3 weeks in the womb. The tiny heart begins to beat at 21 days. Your babys mother is just now wondering if she might be with child. This is a frightening time for her. Pray for her, too, that no matter what the difficulties, she will trust in the Lords provision for her and her child. The Lord has known and loved this child from all eternity, and calls him/her by name.
Spring 3-In-1 Appeal will be taken up this weekend in all our parishes. Please be as generous as possible, using the envelope you received in the mail. If you forgot your envelope, please bring it next weekend. Thank you for your financial support.

I love Spring. I feel like weve been waiting extra long for Spring this year. Spring is a time of new life and growth. This is especially true for both the Universal Church and our local Archdiocese. Each day I hear something about Pope Francis that seems to astound and impress me. He teaches and lives out the dignity of the human person in a truly remarkable way. And, each time people believe they can easily categorize his thoughts in purely political categories, he reminds us that he is Christs representative on earth and was sent to call all people to repentance and forgiveness. One moment hes washing and kissing the feet of a Muslim woman and next he is reminding us that there is no salvation outside of the church. For our Archdiocese, we are in a period called interregnum awaiting the installation of our new Archbishop. Yet, we are also saying goodbye to a faithful servant in Archbishop Jerome Hanus. Archbishop Hanus has been a great leader for the last two decades of this Archdiocese. He is a remarkably kind, intelligent, and spiritual person. Im glad that hes getting the rest that he deserves. One of the nicest things that Ive ever heard about Archbishop Hanus comes from one of the monks from his monastery at Conception Abbey. He said Archbishop Hanus does not make disciples of himself. He knows that its his job to make Disciples of Christ. Speaking of being Disciples of Christ, recently the pastoral leaders of the Archdiocese got together to talk about the New Evangelization. The first presenter was Kevin Feyen, the Director of Adolescent & Young Adult Faith Formation. His presentation really stuck out in my mind for two reasons. First, he very dynamically presented the challenges that we face. He showed the audience an advertisement for a national hotel chain. The point of the advertisement was that people choose what is best for them. So they would have some words like choose your art floating over a museum or a priceless painting. When the advertisement was finished, Kevin asked if we noticed what was incongruous. He then showed us the statement, choose your faith which was placed over a baseball field. It wasnt a mosque or a church or a synagogue. It was a baseball field. The writers of the advertisement decided that people associate nature or sports with prayer more than a church or another place of worship. Needless to say, I was astounded. But, the second part of Kevins talk was to ponder what we need to do to challenge that perception. We need to be better at reaching out to those who are distanced from the church to invite them back. But, we also need to make sure that, if they do come back, the quality of what they experience is such that theyll want to come back again the next week. I know there have been times when my preparation for mass hasnt been as good as it could have been. Ive heard people say things that seem to imply that good enough for church means something that you throw together at the last minute or something you would have replaced in your homes 10-15 years before. We can do better. Im going to rely on the members of the Cluster Pastoral Council and the Cluster Stewardship Committee to bring forth ideas of what we need to do better. Spring is also the time for endings. This week will bring an end to the year of faith formation for our students at an outdoor mass at Three Fingers Campground. I have thoroughly enjoyed the special sacraments that weve celebrated during this Easter season that are also, in a sense, ends. Congratulations to the members of the RCIA who entered the church at our Easter Vigil celebrations. I hope this last year was a time of growth and learning for you. And thank you to Jody Smith for all the hard work you did with them. The first communion celebrations are always such a joy for me. Its so exciting to watch the children come forth to receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. I always chuckle at the one or two who forget to say Amen when they receive the Precious Body and make a face after they receive the Precious Blood. Nonetheless, you can see the grace of the sacrament already at work in these young people. Thank you to all the catechists who prepared them so well. And, lastly, I want to commend the newly confirmed students for their dedication and openness to learn. I look forward to your greater involvement in our parish as leaders with a vision for the needs of the future. We need to listen and learn from you as to what we can do to be better at communicating the faith to the next generation. Thank you to the catechists who prepared them for this great sacrament. As you can see, there have been and will continue to be a lot of transitions for our church, our cluster, our parishes, and ourselves. Perhaps it is a good time to reflect on Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens. 2 A time to give birth, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.
