Materials: Piggie Pie by: Margie Palatini; Print out of pigs on pink paper (one for each student); scissors; glue; cotton balls; pencils Procedure: 1. Instruct students to find a seat on the rug where they will be able to see me 2. So today class I am going to read Piggie Pie by Margie Palatini (show class the cover). I am going to read this book because Margie Palatini is coming to our school to visit us soon! Listen carefully to what happens in the story because it will help you understand what we are going to do later. Also, I think that everyone is going to enjoy this book! 3. Read aloud book only stopping to make sure the students are understanding why the pigs are disguising themselves as other animals 4. When I am done reading I will tell children about the hallway that the other Rider interns and I will be decorating for the authors visit. 5. So boys and girls we need your help with some of the decorations! You will each be disguising a pig. Each third grade class has been assigned an animal to disguise the pigs. I am very excited to say that we are going to disguise our pigs as sheep! So on your desks you will find a picture of a pig and some cotton balls. (Show students a picture of the pig). You will also find in the middle of your tables are glue and scissors. Now I am going to give you some directions and tips for disguising your pigs so it is very important that you all listen.

a. You are going to cut out your pig. There are not enough scissors for everyone, so you will have to be patient and wait. Once you finish cutting out your pig, hand your scissors to someone else at your table, and then throw out your scraps. Then it is very important that you turn your pig over and put your name and Mr. Jones on the back in pencil. b. Then you can start disguising your pig using the cotton balls. If you would like to use crayons, you can do that as well. You do not have to use all of the cotton balls at your desk, but here is a trick for the cotton balls. If you gently pull the cotton ball it will become wider and cover the pig. (Model this to students) c. Another trick that I hope you all use is that you do not put too much glue on the pig. Just a small amount will hold the cotton ball. If you put too much glue on your pig, it will likely rip. d. When you are finished, clean up your area and leave your pig on your desk. I will collect the pigs while you are at lunch. 6. Dismiss students by birth month back to their seats. 7. Walk around the classroom to check in with students. 8. Remind students how much time they have left. 9. When students are done, thank them for helping make decorations for the hallway 10. When students are at lunch and recess, collect the pigs and place them in a bin until I need them to decorate the hallway. Assessment: Students follow instructions and successfully disguise their pig as a sheep using the given materials Management Issues/Transitions: Dismiss students back to their seats by birth month While I read the story have fellow Rider intern (Chelsea) put the materials on the students desks Differentiation: Not needed
