School Board approves contract renewals with staff

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Germantown School Board approved teacher contracts for the 2013-14 school year April 22. Cynthia Coley, director of human resources, said there are 288 staff with a full-time equivalency of 281.55 positions. The district will offer contracts renewals to 282 returning staff with a full-time equivalency of 276.15 positions. Coley said the lower amount for contracts offered are due to retirements, resignations and limited term contracts. Coley added as that vacancies occur those positions will come to the district for consideration. Those positions are filled with a limited term contracts but will be open in the fall. Coley said there are 80 fewer students projected at the elementary level. However, that comes out to approximately one less student per classroom, which shouldn't affect how many teachers are needed at those grade levels. At Kennedy Middle School, a decrease of 25 students is projected but the staffing is estimated to be the same for next year. The board also approved contracts for 10 professional and technical staff. Simulated accident part of Every 15 Minutes program at high school

A mock accident scene outside Germantown High School April 25 was part a two-day presentation at the high school designed to drive home the dangers of driving while intoxicated. The mock accident is part of the "Every 15 Minutes" program that has been held at area high schools in late April for several years. "This programs purpose is to dramatically instill in teenagers the potentially dangerous consequences of drinking alcohol; not only for them, but for others they impact by that choice," Germantown High School Principal Joel Farren stated in a March 25 letter to media. "Aimed at preventing alcohol-related traffic injuries and fatalities, the educational program also challenges students to think about drinking, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions. Our version in 2010 also included the dangers of prescription medication abuse (Oxycontin) and the dangers of text messaging while driving." Farren explained that the "every 15 minutes" reference is to national statistics which at one time showed that every 15 minutes someone in the United States is killed in an alcohol-related crash. He said that figure has recently been revised to one death every 31 minutes. The simulated scene outside Germantown High School involved students portraying individuals involved in an accident. The Germantown Police Department, Germantown Fire Department and the Washington County Medical Examiner were part of the event. The Every 15 Minutes program is a national event that was first proposed to the Washington County Injury Prevention Coalition and West Bend High Schools, where it was done in 2006. The Every 15 Minutes program was held in Germantown in 2007, at Hartford in 2008, at West Bend in 2009, in Germantown and Kewaskum in 2010, at West Bend in 2011 and Slinger last year. Besides the mock accident, an all-school assembly was scheduled for April 26 which was to feature Mike Knetzger, a Green Bay Police officer whose daughter died in an accident where another driver was intoxicated and drag racing. "The organizers of this event are hoping that this program prevents alcohol related tragedy, but also addresses the consequences for making poor choices.," Farren said. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

CHUB CHUB

A rub a dub dub will be good for Chub Chub! Initially impounded to WCHS, Chub Chub is a special kitty to everyone here. Chub Chub was adopted then returned due to a, now treated and resolved, medical issue. This very striking white cat has more of a quiet demeanor but his yellow eyes speak volumes asking for some loving. Chub Chub does like to chat with you and can be a rather active, silly boy! Scratching behind the ears will literally put Chub Chub's head in the palm of your hand. Chub Chub has had a rough past but is now no worse for the wear and doing wonderfully. He would enjoy a home with young, playful male cats, dogs, and children over 8 years of age. He will need regular brushing to keep his coat looking beautiful. Stop in to see this wonderful boy! We are very sure that you will LUB LUB our Chub Chub!

Willow Creek Road improvements added to village 2014 plans

The reconstruction of Willow Creek Road has been added to the list of road projects to be undertaken by the village in 2014. During the April 16 Village Board meeting, Village Engineer Brionne Bischke said the village "has been receiving a lot of calls from residents" regarding why the road isn't part of the upcoming road program. "The road is rapidly deteriorating," Bischke said. Bischke said Willow Creek is a high use road and because of its high use, Bischke said the road is a priority. In the Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating system (PASER), the road is at a 3 on a 1-10 scale, with 1 being failing while 10 is pavement in excellent condition. Bischke said there are drainage and sight distance issues that will need to be addressed as part of the road reconstruction. Bischke said he would want have those items dealt with over the summer. The estimated cost of a whole recon-

Tip of the Week: Always brush in the direction of your cats coat. Going against the grain can irritate her skin and
make her want to flee the scene when she sees you pulling out the grooming supplies. Also, to make cleanup easy, slip a piece of old pantyhose over the head of a brush before grooming. The bristles will poke through, and all you have to do is pull up on the pantyhose to discard the hair. License Number #266935-DS

OFFICIAL NOTICE TO GERMANTOWN WATER UTILITY CUSTOMERS

The Germantown Water Utility will be performing its annual water main flushing on April 22 through May 24, 2013. The flushing process will be executed during the day between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The water main flushing will remove most of the naturally occurring minerals which are harmless, but at the same time may discolor the water. Should you observe Water Utility personnel working in your neighborhood, please limit your usage of the water for 30 to 45 minutes after the flushing has occurred, to insure the water is clear of discoloration before it is drawn into your water system. Should you find discoloration in your water system, please do not wash clothes until the water has cleared. Your help and cooperation in this program will benefit all of the water utility customers.

Couple promoting organ donation

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
Each day an average of 79 people receive organ transplants and someone is added to the national waiting list of more than 80,000 individuals every 10 minutes, according to organdonor.gov. Town of Delafield husband and father Ron Muehlbauer is one of those people, and now his wife, Jane, is working overtime to not only find a kidney for her husband of 36 years, but to emphasize the importance of organ donation. My ultimate goal is raising awareness, she said. Its frustrating because the list is so long and the average wait is four years. Described as thoughtful, analytical and very outgoing, Ron has faced more than the average persons share of trials in his 58 years. I feel very beat down for my age and I know that a transplant would change all of that because I had one once before, he said. When I think about my current situation, I become very depressed. As a child, Ron was diagnosed with Alport Syndrome, a genetic disorder that often results in endstage kidney disease. Quite ill as a youth, Ron missed a couple years of school and had to be homeschooled, his wife explained. In 1996, when faced with kidney failure, Jane was able to give him one of her kidneys; however, about four years ago, the kidney stopped working, and since 2008 Ron has been on dialysiswhich has not been the ideal life for the couple. Having to do dialysis keeps me alive, but it also affects my lifestyle, said Ron. A buyer at Standard Electric Supply Company in Milwaukee for 30 years, Ron had to give that up because I lost my stamina and endurance. For three years Ron spent five hours per day three days each week on dialysis at a local clinic and since last July he has done the dialysis at home four hours each day five days per week. With much of his time spent hooked up to a machine, the avid anything Wisconsin sport fan and nature lover is too often defined by a struggle he did not choose. Five days a week, I am on the machine between 5 and 9 p.m. and can not enjoy outside activities, said Ron. When out of town on vacation, I have to use a clinic three times a week and that cuts into my vacation about half a day each time. Also, the dialysis, while keeping Rons kidneys functioning, takes a toll on the body in other ways. For example, Ron needed a heart valve replacement a year ago. The longer you are on dialysis, the more problems you develop that could stand in the way of a transplant, he said. The number one cause of death for those on dialysis is heart disease. That is why the sooner I get (a kidney), the better. On the waiting list through Froedtert Health for a year now, Ron does not have the option of turning to family for an organ this time. The Muehlbauers two childrenRenee, 35, and Ryan, 32also have Alport Syndrome, and the members of Rons extended family share his genetic profile. He has even lost his brother and sister to the disease. Besides, noted Jane, although the advances in medicine have made the procedure easier than it was when she donated 17 years ago, there are still risks. It takes a special person, she said. And a lot of people are looking for kidneys, so its difficult to get one. A deceased-donor transplantation is a possibility although not ideal, Jane said, so the familys big hope is that someone will step forward to donate, and if that person is not a match with Ron, maybe they can help someone else. They would begin by filling out a questionnaire and some paperwork and then a team reviews all the information, said Jane. That starts the process. And even if they are not a match with Ron and still choose to donate, that moves Ron up on the list. Considered the mentor of the family, Ron is known for being the glue that keeps (the lines of) communication open, using his articulate and logical approach not only with loved ones but with fellow patients as well. When I was going to the clinic, I tried to help the other patients with understanding their medical plans, he said. I also listened to their needs and advocated for them to the social worker. I miss that. Yet in spite of his challenges, Ron does everything he can to keep alive his spirit of fun, engaging in activities like playing with his grand-dog, enjoying barbecues on the deck and exploring the state. Once a year, we take a vacation to northern Wisconsin where I look forward to soaking a line once in a while, he said. Each fall, we take a ride up the Mississippi to enjoy the fall colors. We take short rides in nice weather to various parks in the area. The family remains hopeful, but until someone willing to donate appears or a miracle comes through, there is only one option. Now we just wait, said Jane. Anyone interested in learning whether they are a match with Ron can call the Muehlbauer family at (262) 691-2048.

charged with overseeing the search for a new superintendent recently reviewed priorities for a new superintendent as stated by staff, community, administrators and through a community survey, board member Lester Spies stated. Spies said the committee came up with a list of seven priorities for a new superintendent. Spies said that during an April 29 meeting, the committee will meet in closed session with the intention of choosing six candidates for interviews during the week of May 6. School Board President Robert Soderberg added that the community survey results were to be posted on the district web site. "We do have a very healthy candidate pool of those who are interested in coming to Germantown," Soderberg said. The new superintendent will replace Susan Borden, who is leaving for the same position in the DeForest district. Board officers finalized The meeting was the first for new board member Brian Medved, who was elected to the board in the April 2 election. The board also elected officers, with Soderberg select-

ed as board president, Sarah Larson vice president, Michael Loth treasurer and Spies as clerk. Spies was also selected as the board representative to the Cooperative Educational Services Agency #1. Medical matters Dirk Steinert, who has served as the district medical advisor, will continue to serve in that role for the coming school year. School nurse Cynthia Dieringer has been designated as the custodian of patient health care records. Donations accepted The board accepted a donation of $3,000 from the Nancy Sellars Foundation to go toward the Every 15 Minutes program which was scheduled to be held April 25-26 at the high school. The program seeks to drive home the message of the dangers of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The board also accepted a $1,000 donation from the Mark Stoffel family to be used toward technology improvements at Amy Belle Elementary School and the donation of $300 from Bob Kopfmann of the Kopfmann Company to Kennedy Middle School for the blue office copy room.

... The worst road in Germantown

From page 4
struction of the road is $780,000. A Richfield resident said that Willow Creek near Amy Belle Road was so bad this past winter drivers were veering into the other lane to avoid potholes. While the potholes are filled, they are now coming apart. "I would say it is the worst road in Germantown," the Richfield resident said. She added that Willow Creek was in poor condition the previous year as well. President Dean Wolter explained that Willow Creek was originally on the list of road projects but was removed once due to the cost of a full replacement Bischke said village staff is also pushing to complete the second phase of the Forest Heights subdivision, which includes work on Elm Lane. For your convenience the Village Public Works Department is scheduling a Spring brush pick-up starting the second Monday in May (May 13, 2013). Although this process will take approximately 2 weeks to complete, we will not be extending the pick-up, or picking up brush that is put out after Sunday, May 12, 2013. Limbs shall be no more than 6 foot in length and placed at the curb with the trunk facing the street for easier handling. Please tie branches 2 or smaller into bundles no larger than 2 feet in diameter using twine or light rope. Your cooperation with this will greatly increase the efficiency at which we can pick up the brush. Brush in containers WILL NOT be picked up as too often there is yard waste in the bottom of the container. Yard waste and leaves are not included in the pick-up. We encourage you to take your yard waste to the Recycling Center. Please be aware that raking leaves into the street area is against Village Ordinance and the Village of Germantown WILL NOT pick up such leaves. Again, we encourage you to take your leaves to the Recycling Center.
