Introduce vocabulary (community).

3. Teacher reads aloud p. 54-57 while students follow along, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE. 4. Ask questions listed in the margin of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding. Focus on these questions: What is a community? Why are helpers important to a community?

5. Ask additional questions not listed in the TE such as: How do you help at home? How do you help at school? Do any of your parents work as a community helper? What jobs help keep us safe? What jobs make our community a nice place to live?

6. Activity - Do the Reading Skill Activity on the bottom of page 54. When students have completed the worksheet, have them discuss their answers with their shoulder partner. Teacher will then complete the same chart on butcher paper using responses from the students and asking them to explain why they chose to put the job in the category that they did. F. CLOSURE: Have students discuss with their shoulder partner one thing they learned about community helpers today. G. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Students will write in their journals about their favorite community helper and how he/she keeps the community safe and healthy or helps to make it a nice place to live. They will draw a picture to go with their writing. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must Identify and describe occupations in the community that help people, i.e., police officers, fire fighters, and nurses. Writing about and drawing a picture of their favorite community helper will demonstrate that students understand the concepts taught in this lesson.

H. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the reading and discussion questions will be the easiest to teach. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the Reading Skill Activity will be the most challenging because students might think that all community helpers would fall into the category of makes the community a nice place to live. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension to this lesson, I would use Extend Lesson 4 (p. 58-59) about Fire Chief Rosemary Cloud. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont understand the concepts in this lesson, I would use the Reteach Mini Lesson on p. 57 and together do a graphic organizer about community places and community helpers. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I dont think any part of this lesson needs to be changed. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was deciding on the assessment. I thought the study/guide homework in the TE was too easy, so I chose the journal entry because I think it would assess understanding better.
