Celebrating the Sixth Sunday of Easter

This portion of John's Gospel comes near the end of the first of four chapters that make up Jesus' long farewell
discourse at the Last Supper. This section of chapter 14 actually sums up the themes of the opening of the discourse: the Christian's life is not shaped by Jesus' absence but by God's abiding presence; God's presence overcomes anxiety about God's absence; and the present holds in it the seeds of a fresh future shaped by love, not fear. These verses also contain a glimpse of some of the other themes of the farewell discourse: Jesus' relationship with the Father and the disciples' relationship to Jesus connect the disciples to the Father as well. Jesus promises to send an Advocate or intercessor who will remind the disciples of everything that Jesus taught them and bring them peace. Jesus is preparing his disciples in advance for his absence so that they will continue to believe in him and not feel all alone after his return to the Father. After the initial excitement of his Easter appearances, Jesus will remain with his followers in a very different way throughout the centuries. As our celebration of the Easter season is coming to an end, the liturgy reminds us that Jesus remains with us through the Holy Spirit, who teaches us everything we need to know, reminds us of all that Jesus taught, and brings us peace. Have a Special Petition for Our Lady of Lourdes?

There is a military pilgrimage leaving for Lourdes, France on the 17th of May. They will be serving wounded and disabled veterans and military families. Barbara Larson (a parishioner) will be accompanying them on this pilgrimage. She is inviting anyone that wants to send a prayer petition (to put at the feet of Our Lady of Lourdes) to place the prayer in a sealed envelope. There will be a bag on the MCCW table in the back hallway marked "Prayer Petitions for Lourdes." The prayers petitions will be carried personally by Mrs. Larson.

Holy Day of Obligation this Month

We will celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord on May 12th. This celebration is considered a Holy Day of Obligation for us Catholic. The Ascension of Our Lord, which occurred 40 days after Jesus Christ rose from the dead on Easter, is the final act of our redemption that Christ began on Good Friday. On this day, the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven (Luke 24:51; Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9 -11).

St. Michaels Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM) went bowling to the Gordon Lanes last April 21st to celebrate their monthly meeti ng. Our Youth had a lot of fun while they had the chance to show their moves not only by bowling, but also by dancing! The CYM Coor dinator Mrs. Laura Pizzi stated that Bowling day was a success again this year. We would like to thank to all the teens who partici pated, but specially to the chaperones, who donated their free time to this activity. A big thank you to St. Michaels parishioners for th eir support to parish activities, to include the Youth Ministry! The Big Wedding
By John Mulderig Catholic News Service NEW YORK (CNS) -- The faux Catholicism that pervades the vulgar romantic comedy "The Big Wedding" (Lionsgate), the flagrant erroneousness of which is only the most annoying of this picture's many defects. We're fairly warned of what we're in for in this regard, though: The very first line of dialogue compares the church, in a muddled but decidedly derogatory way, to oral sex. And just what kind of a church do we get on screen? The kind where Father Moinighan (Robin Williams) -- a straw man in a Roman collar -- breezily informs Alejandro (Ben Barnes) and Missy (Amanda Seyfried), the couple preparing for the titular nuptials, that their indulgence in premarital sex and use of birth control will land them in hell. Father doesn't seem especially troubled by this prospect, and the young 'uns are far too sophisticated to take his smug, ham-handed condemnation as anything but a joke. Alejandro -- a Harvard grad, so we're informed -- also objects to the requirement that he promise to raise his children Catholic. Well, naturally he does, he's educated, after all! But Alejandro's troubles with the faith are just beginning. In this same interview, he learns from Missy that his hyper-pious Colombian mother Madonna (Patricia Rae) -- who hasn't come to visit him in the States since she gave him up for adoption -- unexpectedly plans to attend the forthcoming ceremony. This sets up the film's "Big Problem," because Alejandro has never told Mom that his affluent adoptive parents, Don (Robert De Niro) and Ellie (Diane Keaton), are divorced. Alejandro is so worried about the effect this scandalous bit of news will have on the perpetually rosaryclutching Madonna that he asks Don and Ellie to pretend they're still married. They agree. Not surprisingly, however, the proposed arrangement leaves Don's live-in girlfriend Bebe (Susan Sarandon) fuming. As Don and Ellie's awkward charade plays out, we get to know Alejandro's sister Lyla (Katherine Heigl) -whose infertility has put her marriage on the rocks -- as well as his brother Jared (Topher Grace). Jared is that supreme freak of nature in Tinseltown's bestiary, the Adult Male Virgin. As outmoded in his thinking as Father Moinighan, Jared, it seems, is "waiting for love." Things could be worse, though; at least he's not waiting for marriage. Predictably, the arrival on the scene of yet another wedding guest, Madonna's sultry daughter Nuria (Ana Ayora), soon has Jared reconsidering his eccentric resolve. Bedroom complications -- past and present -- are all-tooamicably resolved in the lead-up to Don's payoff toast. In this oration, he compares God to the Wizard of Oz and announces that, since there's no one pulling the cosmic strings, we'd better make the most of love. Or something to that effect. Overall, the message of writer-director Justin Zackham's adaptation of the 2006 French-Swiss film "Mon Frere Se Marie" seems to be that -- in a world with no man-behind-the-curtain to pay attention to -- it's fine to be confused as long as you're not inhibited. The film contains implied atheism, anti-Catholicism, flawed moral values, strong sexual content -- including aberrant sex acts, rear nudity and a frivolous treatment of homosexuality and adultery -- a couple of uses of profanity and much rough and crude language. Chapel facility can be requested for religious activities and services within our parish. Requests need to be in written in the official form and submitted via the PLC to avoid scheduling issues. - Submit requests at least two weeks in advance. - Forms can be found for your convenience in the inbox located in the Catholic Office. - You may deposit your PO request in the PLC mailbox at anytime. - Priority for chapel usage is as follows: 1. VOLUNTEERS COORDINATOR (volunteer position)

St. Michaels Parish at Fort Gordon is looking for a dedicated, hardworking person, sensitive to the ways God calls and equips people for mission in daily life, to help the members of our congregation grow in both spirituality and in participation. Positive communication skills, including both quality listening skills and comfort with cold-calling, are a necessity! Ability to maintain open and often communication with parish volunteers. Duties will include, but are not limited to: - Establish and maintain relationships with congregation members and community organizations to assist the congregation in accomplishing its missional responsibilities. - Create and maintain databases of congregational member information such as skills and interests. Such databases may include some or all software such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Publisher. - Establish and oversee recruitment procedures to meet specific group needs for activities and functions of volunteers. - Evaluate the work of volunteers to ensure that work is of appropriate quality and that resources are used effectively. - Assist in the assimilation process of new members. Work with the Parish Life Coordinator to acknowledge, recognize, and support volunteers as well as recommend new directions for ministry. - Help connect members with existing ministries and programs within the congregation. - Report questions, comments, or concerns regularly to the Parish Life Coordinator. - Other duties as assigned by the Pastor and/or Parish Life Coordinator or as deemed necessary. Care Ministry Coordinator

We are looking for a volunteer to coordinate the Care Ministry. This ministry assists parishioners who are sick at home or hospital. The ministry coordinator is responsible for coordinating visits in consultation with the senior pastor and PLC. The coordinator will be willing to visit parishioners who request this assistance, share the Word of God and prayer with them, and offer Holy Communion at the time of visit. Pastoral Visitations
There is simply no place more appropriate than the home for pastors to interact with their parishioners in a personal manner. And this holds true whether such interaction is for the purpose of leading a person to Christ, reclaiming a lost soul, or offering support and guidance. For this reason, our Pastor, Father Joseph would like to start Pastoral Visitations to give parishioners the opportunity of meeting and knowing him. He would like to visit parishioners homes twice a week, so if you are interested in receiving the special visit of our Pastor, please contact the PLC Lola Rivera to schedule a Pastoral visitation @ (706) 791-4829, or plc@saintmichaelparishfg.org. Father Joseph is looking forward to visit your home, talk and pray with you and your family in earnestness and humility.

Confessions
Private confessions at St. Michaels are available for you before Mass on Saturdays 4pm and Sundays at 8am in the confessional box located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, but also face-to-face and by appointment at your convenience. Confessions are available in Spanish when Father Joseph celebrates mass.

Matrimony
Arrangements for marriage preparation should be made at least six months in advance of the proposed date. If there has been a prior marriage that has not been annulled by the Catholic Church, more time may be required. Participation in a marriage preparation workshop/program is required. Initially, all requests of information should be directed to the Catholic Pastor at (267) 243-5861.

Baptism
In order to receive Baptism, parent(s) must be registered and attending Mass. Dates and times of Baptism can ONLY be set after registering for Pre-Baptism class, and talking with a Priest. Baptism and preparation for Baptism must be arranged 30 days in advance. Contact the PLC if you need assistance.

Adoration on Wednesday
Join us for adoration this coming Wednesday at 6:30pm. We meet every week to spend and dedicate an hour in Eucharistic Adoration. This is a great way to increase your faith and help you with your prayer life.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

The RCIA program is the process through which interested adults and older children are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic doctrine and way of life. Contact Kelley Culver if you need assistance at rcia@saintmichaelparishfg.org .

Wedding Anniversary & Marriage Vow Renewal

Send us an email if you are celebrating your wedding anniversary next month. We also encourage you to let us know if you would like to renew your marriage vows at Mass, at least two weeks in advance. Requests can be submitted at: plc@saintmichaelparishfg.org

Writing Checks: When writing checks for our weekend collections, please make sure you write the check to CTOF (Chapel Tithes and Offering Fund) Also remember , if you write a check $250 or above, you may ask for a receipt from the chaplain assistant.

CCD Registration
CCD registration is open throughout the year. Please know that in order to receive the Holy Sacrament of First Communion or Confirmation, children need to attend Religious Education as required. Contact the RE Coordinator Adriana Gramer if you have questions.
