Emma has been dancing since she was twelve years old and is extremely dedicated.
Her and her four other sisters all dance Ballet at Ballet 5:8. They are a non-profit organazation that brings worship through the form of dance to the community. She is a senior this year at the studio and will be going to Pennsylvania for college in the upcoming fall. She hopes to continue dancing and take up acting while she is in school there. For this project we are to trace a photo and add as much detail as possible to make it seem realistic. Here I have photographed my friend dancing and chose this photo for the pose and the shadows and highlights. As for the process of this project, which was to take a photo and use Illustrator with the pen tool to trace a photo using shapes. Everything that is seen in the finished tracing (on page 7) and throughout the process is a shape. From the floor to the ceiling tiles to Emma herself. In the first screen shot (step 1) is the simple background. The floor is one shape and the wall is another. The ceiling is one shape with mutliple shapes ontop of it. The ceiling is made of about eleven tiles and two lights. Between the lights there is about ten different shapes to make up both lights. I began capturing the background, the ceiling, wall and floor. Then traced the ceiling tiles and the lights and shapes around the lights and the tile garter things. I then moved down the wall (step 2) and traced the shadow and highlights from the ceiling lights that are on the wall. As well as the emergency light that is in the background on the wall. And the ballet barre. I added the barre and the mounts and the shadows that are casted onto the wood by the mounts and the shadow that the wood itself casts onto

the wall. As well as the nails and the different color textures and knots that are in the wood. As for the main subject (step 3) I began tracing her legs separately and then moved up to the torso and arms and then the hands and face and hair. In her right hand there are many different areas of shadows and highlights and it was difficult with the colors that the eye dropper was pulling up so in order to correct the super darkness of the colors it using I pulled back the colors by changing the opacity to bring them down to normal shadow hues. I did the same for the right leg that has many different shadows as well as her foot as the slipper itself has many different colors too. The face and ear and eyes and neck (step 4-5) also have an extensive amount of shadow varations. The hair is all that still needs a lot more detail. I have the general color of the different areas of the hair and now it is to add more glares and brush streaks that are in the hair. The colors for some areas get corrected (step 6) as the eye dropper tool pulls some strange choices through. Then the shades and opacity is altered (step 7-8).

The Final

Step 2

The craft of this tracing project was used with adobe illustrator and then the pen tool and the eye dropper to bring the color in. I went through and started with the background and then moved from the ceiling down to the floor to the barre to Emma from the foot up and then brought in the details of shadows and highlights. The concept of the piece is that it is this woman, Emma dancing ballet. The composition is in the photograph itself and pose that she is doing. The point of the photo is to give the feeling of the gracefulness and poise.

oncept: I choose to change the color of her top half, hands and head, and made them cool colors. Although while dancing it is very flowy Emma in particular was moving a bit more stiffly a bit more slowly. The bottom half are warmer colors because the exercise was concentrating on leg movement. The movements

omposition: What my viewers should see first is Emma, in blue, her hands and head. It gives the feels of stiffness. The feeling of controlling the pose. The bottom half of warm colors are what the viewer sees second. Theyre warmer, more able to change position at any moment. The color change is light, almost looks like it hasnt changed at all but the slippers are clearly different and the shadows and highlights change.

Disembodiment-ed Feelings
raft: This was a photo that was taken a few weeks ago. I took it into to adobe Illustrator and traced it piece for piece from ceiling to floor to barre to her foot to working up to the top of her hand. I used the eye dropper to pull in the skin/shoe/wall/etc. color for each area that was different from the others. The difference in this one was the use of another effect. oncept: This one was chosen because of the disfigurement of the torso. It extends further out than the rest of the parts of her. How most of the pieces remain.

were much more different than others.

Feel the Movement

omposition:The first thing the viewer sees is the disembodied torso. It stands out more than the rest of the limbs. The second is that the viewer notices is the offset of he working leg to the foot and the wrinkles in the leotard remain where the torso once was. Third is the movement of the hair on top of the head. Also the shadows on the hands remain where they are giving a slight 3-d effect or blurred motion that was captured.

Over Grown Passion

raft: This was a photo that was taken a few weeks ago. I used the eye dropper to pull in the skin/shoe/wall/ etc. color for each area that was different from the others. Also what was used for this one was a effect on the barre that changed the shape of the barre. oncept: The reason I chose this one was because the change that occurred gave a modern feeling to the picture. Its a simple change and does not look like much is different at

a quick glance. The fact that the change happened this way also can lend to the idea that after one has practiced for long times at the barre and you have mastered your balance you can move away from the barre. omposition: The first thing the viewer should see is the dancer. She stands easy and simple in the front and the movement from looking for her high hand moving down leads the viewer to see her back right foot which leads their eye to the squares of the once positioned barre. Which is the second thing the viewer sees. After seeing the barre the viewer may notice the final background as the third but their eyes may flow back to the barre.

Modern Attitude

raft: This was a photo that was taken a few weeks ago. I took it into to adobe Illustrator and traced it piece for piece from ceiling to floor to barre to her foot to working up to the top of her hand. I used the eye dropper to pull in the skin/shoe/wall/etc. color for each area that was different from the others. The change in this was lines were brought in and changed the color of the stroke to a patter and the thickness of the line was increased. oncept: This was chosen because of the stroke pattern. It continued the patter throughout the

whole piece although each line was not connected to one another. It crops the picture in its own way. It only shows part of her face and really controls what the viewer sees. omposition: The first thing the viewer sees is the pattern and it takes their eye all around the picture. The second thing the viewer sees is the yellow the looks as if it is creeping up her face which crops it nicely to reveal only part of the expression on the face. The third is the hidden barre behind her that has the most chunk of the pattern in the whole

Awaken the Grave

Lets meet Awaken the Grave, located out of New Lenox, IL. They are a heavy metal band working their way up in the musical world.

The band originally started as two people. These two guys, Pat and Mark, (far right Pat, middle left Mark), got together in their sophomore year of high school in 2007. Both of them play guitar. They began playing just the two of them at Another Hole in the Wall in Steger, IL. About a year later in

2008 Tayler joined as their bassist (far left). Billy joined the same time as the drummer. He is no longer part of Awaken the Grave today. Gabe joined late in 2012 as the singer and songwriter. As they collabarate on the lyrics for some songs majority are his own lyrics. They all the share the same goal of making it big.

The band practices about three times a week if not more and put together recordings of their own for others to hear on facebook. They have played about five shows as a full band. One basement show, one at a bar in Midlothian, and three at Another Hole in the Wall. They hope to find some-

one for a new drummer soon to begin playing shows again. They hope to find other venues to play at more in the city. Go to facbook.com/AwakenTheGrave to check them out!

Mark and Pat the Guitarists

These are the guitarists of Awaken the Grave. These two started the band back in 2007. Mark is on the left and Pat is on the right. This photo was cropped from a larger photo. The original photo had nothing else going on in it except for Pat and Mark. I chose to keep the color detail of their guitars in the black and white photo because they both care deeply, as a guitarist does, about their instruments. Looking at the photo it almost looks like a mirror of the same person. This photo was taken with a Canon Rebel T3i and photoshopped.

E.Bennett page 25

This is an image taken at one of the bands shows at Another Hole in the Wall. I chose to add this photo to my magazine because the placements of the members

are perfectly positioned. (Beginning left to right) Mark is up front (left) yet slightly behind Gabe (second right), Tayler (second left) is farthest back, and Pat (far right) is medium front be-

tween Mark and Gabe. This photo was taken with a cannon rebel t3i up front in the crowd and slightly off center. With the photo in black and white, although most of the

photo is black, band members draw attention to themselves. Each is equally black but the guitars/bass or even hair brings lighter color to draw the eye from person to person.

In the Spot light

This is Gabe the singer of Awaken the Grave. Gabe joined the band in late 2012. This photo was taken at a show at Another Hole in the Wall in Steger Illinois. Gabe is positioned alone in the center of the image. He is leaning slightly forward while screaming into the microphone. This image was photoshopped only a bit. The background was fully blacked out to take away any noise. The brightness was brought in with the red color. The light opens up the outline of his silhouette. The red behind him, mostly on the left (his right), brings a different splash of color to the photo from the black and white (in his shirt). This photo was taken with a Cannon Rebel T3i.

These inkblots were made in the summer of 2012. Everyone knows the process for making your own inkblots. Grab some paper, any sixe you desire, grab some ink and splatter that all over the paper to your hearts desire. Fold that paper in half, although I suppose you dont always need to.

Fetuses
The paper used was regular drawing paper, 18x24 inches. This one was folded in half and the image of alien like babies came through. It looks as though as they are connected in the middle yet separated by something, maybe a bunch of cords. Maybe these are futuristic twin babies separated and floating in their own bubbles.

The paper used was regular drawing paper, 18x24 inches. This particular inkblot was crumpled before the ink was added and then folded down the middle. The splatter-

ing was kept to a minimum. What came out of this one was the image a baby that looks as though they are boredly looking out at you with a yawn so big that their jaw detached for the moment. The splatters around them could be all the toys and objects that they discarded from having played with them so often. With its big wide black eyes it looks at you as though to say Theres nothing around here what do you have to do?

Alien Octopus Attack!

These inkblots were made in the summer of 2012. Everyone knows the process for making your own inkblots. Grab some paper, any sixe you desire, grab some ink and splatter that all over the paper to your hearts desire. Fold that paper in half, although I suppose you dont always need to. The inkblot here was made with ink and metallic silver acrylic paint. This was folded in half and the first experiment using acrylic paint as well. At first I did not expect the paint and ink to mix well enough to make a image. It worked out as a bit more smeary and watery than the actual paint. When the image was folded and pulled back I saw a huge octopus with a part body being formed. In the center of the image you can see the head of the octopus. With huge almond shaped eyes in the center and the smeared drips down the center near the bottom of the head that starts to almost form a body. On the sides of the paper you can see the curved dots that form a set of arms of the octopus that are coming out to grab you! A possible second set of arms could be between the head and the side arms reaching back behind the octopus.

Sumptuous Sublime Squid

These inkblots were made in the summer of 2012. Everyone knows the process for making your own inkblots. Grab some paper, any sixe you desire, grab some ink and splatter that all over the paper to your hearts desire. Fold that paper in half, although I suppose you dont always need to. This inkblot protrays a squid rising out of the center of the page. As though she has some important tasks to take care of she rises with her eyes partly closed as thought she is looking down her nose at the other sea creatures that surround her. Beneath her eyes is a human nose shape and then a mouth. Her lips look colored and plumped, almost like a duck face is being made. Also it looks as though she is pointing her shoulders. Or as if she is wearing something to make her shoulders look pointy and important.

About the Artist

My name is Elizabeth Bennett. I am 21 years old and this is my first school year (1213) at Saint Xavier University. I went to high school at Lincoln-Way Central and then spent three years at Joliet Junior College where I finished the majoirty of my general education requirements. I am a Graphic Design major here at SXU. Outside of classes when I have spare time I really enjoy to create anything. For the summer I plan on creating props for my Senior Seminar project next school year (1314). I also plan on creating a tree from dead pointe shoes. I am currently collecting shoes to make that project happen. I hope you enjoyed my magazine for Computer Graphics Spring 2013.All photos and cover were created by me and are copyrighted.
