A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan discusses the different colonies. Students will learn about New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th Skill Level: on level Grouping: whole group for steps 1-8. Large group for step 9. C. Materials: Elmo Picture of U.S.A. flag Map of United States (per student) Map of the 13 colonies (per student) 3 different colors (crayon or colored pencil) Colonies worksheet Computer Internet Access Teachertube.com website 0:00-2:50 minutes: http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=119484 D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o H1.5.5 Describe the social, political, and religious lives of people in the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies.

Student-Friendly Standards I can describe the lives of the people who lived in the 13 original colonies.

E. I Procedure: 1. Show students a picture of the American flag. Ask students what the stripes stand for on the flag. 2. Ask students if they know anything about the original 13 colonies. 3. Explain that the 13 colonies were formed by the British. 4. Using Elmo and the map of the United States, show students where the 13 colonies are located. 5. Explain that the 13 colonies can be divided into 3 groups: New England, Middle, and Southern. 6. Shade each group in a different color on the map. Students will copy on their map.

7. Teacher will show teachertube.com video. Students will fill in their worksheet as the video plays. 8. Class discussion about the video and material. 9. Teacher will write down the state names on the map for the students to copy on their own map. Explain that originally, each state was once a colony. 10. CLOSURE: Students will tell their group 1 of the 13 colonies. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The worksheet will be the assessment. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will check the students worksheets for correct information and to ensure it relates to the lesson and it copied correctly from the video. The material from todays lesson doesnt require much higher level thinking because it includes a lot of introductory facts. I will gather a deeper understanding on day 7.
