Discuss- As a class we will discuss why the students think leaders are important. We will compile a list together.

2. Before reading the text we will discuss the meaning of the vocabulary words. The vocabulary words for this lesson are leader and rule. 3. Then as a class we will read pages 44-47. As we read I will stop and ask questions to check for understanding. I will explain concepts as the students read. 4. After the reading we will have a guided discussion in which I ask these questions: o o o o Why do people make rules? Why is it important to follow rules? What does a leader do? Who is the leader in our classroom?

5. Next I will explain the directions on the Reading Skill worksheet. After explaining the directions the students will work on the worksheet individually. As the students are working on the worksheet I will walk around checking on their progress. E. CLOSURE: I will then close with explaining that leaders and rules are important for the safety of others and us. I will explain that it is important to follow the rules and listen to leaders. I will then assign the Vocabulary and Study Guide Worksheet for homework. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will measure students understanding by their answers to the questions in our guided discussions. I will also evaluate the students answers on the Reading skill worksheet and the Vocabulary and Study Guide worksheet.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know whether students understood the concepts of the lesson by listening to their answers to questions about the concepts and also by their answers on both worksheets. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part of the lesson will be teaching the students how to play follow the leader. I think the students will have fun and it will help them grasp the concept of why leaders are important. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging part will be teaching the students the importance of leaders and why they get to make the rules. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will extend this lesson by doing the extend lesson on pages 48-51. In this lesson we will read the lesson and then discuss what happened in the story. We will also discuss why it was important for the characters to do their chores. Depending on the answers to the questions I may have students write a few sentences about a job their parents asked them to do and why it was important for them to do it. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For the students who dont grasp the concepts I will spend more time working with them one on one. I will also use the reteach mini-lesson with the students who need more help grasping the concept. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? Starting out with follow the leader may be difficult, if the kids get too hyper from it. If it gets too out of hand I will just discuss the game with the students rather than playing it. 6.When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson was figuring out the best way to introduce the lesson. Resources: Houghton Mifflin School and Family Social Studies textbook
