1) Internet is a global collection of computers connected with each other. 2) As a collection of computers, networks and the services they provide. 3) As a collection of resources prepared and accessible worldwide. 4) As a community of people who communicate and interact over the internet. The different things required for an Internet connection are i) Computer ii) Modem Modulator, Demodulator iii) Phone line iv) ISP (Internet service provider) for e.g. Satyam. ISP is a key or permission to use or access the internet. Types of Modem 1) Internal Modem which is inside the computer 2) External Modem which is outside the computer Modem converts digital signal into analog and analog signal into digital signal. The different speed of modem are 56.0 kbps (kilo bytes per second), 128 kbps, 256 kbps, 512 kbps etc. Types of Internet Connection:1) Dial up Access In this type computer dials particular ISP number. 2) ISDN Integrated service digital network It is faster than dial up connection. The lowest speed in ISDN is 128 kbps. 3) Cable Network Connection In cable network connection, we use different cables. It is faster than ISDN and less expensive as compared to ISDN. Server A server is the computer which provides services. It is also called as Host or Web Server. Client / Workstation A client is the computer which request for the service. Protocol Rules and regulations for data transfer. 1) HTTP Hyper Text Transfer Protocol This protocol is used to address the web. 2) FTP File Transfer Protocol This protocol is used to transfer different files on the net. 3) TCP/IP Transmission Controlled Protocol / Internet Protocol Browser (Web browser) It is an internet tool use to access the internet. Search Engines The computers which are used to search any information or any site on the net are known as search engines. The different search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. Web page The different pages on the net which contain information, image, picture etc is called as web page. Web site Interlinked connecting of different web pages together is called as website. e.g. www.indianrail.gov.in www.yahoo.com E-mail E-mail stands for electronic mail. E-mail is a file containing text, image, picture, sound etc received/send by someone. Sections of E-mail To This is the receivers E-mail address.

Cc This is carbon copy. The message is sent to all addresses mentioned in Cc. BCc This is known as blind carbon copy.
