GPRS center The GPRS center (gure 2) connects the GPRS substations (gure1) to the process control system. In addition to managing and handling GPRS data transmission by means of the GPRS connection management (gure 2), the GPRS center is capable of performing redundant inter-control center communication alternative route connection protocol conversion IEC608705-101 to -104 and IEC60870-5104 to -101

address conversion between substations and control center process signal routing time synchronization of substations via the integrated telecontrol node (gure 2). Present telecontrol center design allows the connection of up to 64 substations. The communication between the substations and the control center is based on the telecontrol protocols IEC60870-5101 or IEC60870-5-104.

Figure 2: GPRS center

Telecontrol substation connection An Ethernet interface connected to the Internet/Intranet transmits the remote data from the substations. At IEC60870-5-101 transmission, the telecontrol node takes over the data transmitted by the substations from the GPRS connection management, which provides a logical serial interface (VCOM1 to VCOMn) for each substation. Implemented is the balanced transmission mode, which means that each logical COM interface is allocated to one of the substations. Unbalanced transmission would lead to higher costs due to the fact that permanent scanning of the substations increases the generated data volume.

For data transmission based on the IEC60870-5-104 protocol, the GPRS center provides up to 64 clients that communicate with the substations over the GPRS center's Ethernet interface (IEC 60870-5-104 server). Inter-control center communication The GPRS center can use both IEC60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5104 transmission to pass on the data received from the substations to the control center. To implement a redundancy architecture, the GPRS center can be equipped with several serial IEC60870-5-101 interfaces and/or several Ethernet-IEC60870-5-104 interfaces (10/100 Mbits/s) for inter-control center communication.

The interfaces can be used for parallel operation (connection of several control systems) or redundancy operation (redundant connection of a control system). Every IEC60870-5-104 interface can establish up to 4 logical connections to one or several control centers. These connections can be operated independently and simultaneously. If several physical Ethernet interfaces are used, networks for different control centers can be physically separated (e.g., control center with backup center). Additional functions The telecontrol node of the GPRS center is also responsible for routing the process signals. This reduces the load on the system asonly the data destined for the

connected substation (identied by allocated station number) or the corresponding control center are transmitted over the interface. In addition, the GPRS center can convert the transmission protocols so that it is possible, for example, to pass on substation data received in IEC60870-5-101 format to the process control system in IEC60870-5-104 format. Also, addresses can be converted so that the technical IEC60870-5101/-104 addresses of the substations (ASDU) can be transmitted together with other IEC60870-5101/-104 addresses both in the control system and opposite direction. The connections between the GPRS center and the telecontrol substations are monitored. If a connection fails, the connected control center will be notied.

Parameter denition via standard Web browser 5

If inter-control center communication is based on an Ethernet interface, the time of the GPRS center is synchronized over the network by means of the NTP service or the IEC60870-5-104 synchronization command. If serial control system connection is implemented, the time is synchronized with the IEC60870-5-101 synchronization command of the control center. The time of the connected substations is synchronized from the center by means of telecontrol messages. Alternatively, the synchronization commands of the control system can be passed on from the center to the substations.

Service The GPRS center has an integrated Web server for parameter denition and diagnostic tasks. Access to the Web server requires user authentication. Substations You can choose from three substation designs to best suit your application needs: Compact station in 2 versions for low number of data points (gure 1) ME 4012 PA-M modular system with up to 16I/O modules for medium number of data points (gure 2) ME 4012 PA-C modular system with up to 21I/O modules for large number of data points (gure 3)
