Making Choices Social Studies Lesson Plan Day 4 Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is designed for 3rd grade students to explain how a person makes choices about what to buy and evaluate the opportunity cost of choosing one product over another. Students will also explain the relationship between scarcity and choice. This lesson uses the Houghton and Mifflin Communities text pages 274-277. Target Population: 3rd Grade All levels Whole group reading, individual assessment. Materials: Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Communities. Markers, colored pencils Poster boards Magazines Computers Scissors Glue Objectives: E9.3.1 Identify needs as high priority wants, and wants as goods, services, or leisure activities. I can identify high priority items as needs. E9.3.2 Give examples of prices set by businesses for selling goods and services. I can identify prices that businesses set for selling goods. Procedure: 1. TW ask class: If you had to choose between your favorite food for the rest of your life, a wish of your choice, or $1,000,000 what would you choose? Tell your group your answer. How did you decide? You make choices each day, what to wear, who to sit with at lunch, to do your homework, or follow directions. What choices have you already made today? Tell your shoulder partner. Today we will discuss making money choices or decisions. 2. Read pages 274 through 277. Ask the TE questions 1, 2, and 3 on page 275 in the book. Students discuss questions with a partner. 3. Upon completion of page 277, TW go over Lesson Review questions 3, 4, and 5 on page 277. Ask for volunteers. 4. Next, SW be doing the Leveled Practice Extra Support activity on page 275. TW give students a poster board and markers to complete activity. Students may draw their own pictures, cut out pictures from magazines the teacher will have, or use the computer to print out their pictures.

Making Choices Social Studies Lesson Plan Day 4 5. Closure: TW call on volunteers to share what they have created. SW turn in poster boards. Assessment: (Identify needs as high priority wants, and wants as goods, services, or leisure activities. Give examples of prices set by businesses for selling goods and services) TW do informal observations during reading and questioning period. TW collect and grade poster boards. Reflection: Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of this lesson will be helping the students realize that they make choices every single day. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? Explaining opportunity cost might be challenging. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would follow up by doing an activity about scarcity so they can see firsthand what its all about. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who didnt grasp the concept I would pull them aside for additional help. This is a straight-forward lesson. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I was debating whether or not if the activity was sufficient for the students. I didnt want it to be too simple for them. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was finding standards that met my lesson.
