Responsibilities Social Studies Lesson Plan Day 2 Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is a 5th grade history lesson that will give the students an understanding that everyone has social responsibilities that need to be fulfilled. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History (p. 700). Target Population: Fifth Grade All levels Whole group reading, individual assessment. Materials: Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History. Paper, colored pencils, markers, crayons, pencils. Objectives: H3.5.3 Describe ways individuals display social responsibility. H3.5.3 I can describe how people display social responsibility. Procedure: 1. Class will read page 700. After, teacher will ask students what responsibilities they have at home; examples might include feeding the dog, cleaning the toilets, taking out the trash, etc. The teacher will put three different people on the board and the students will be divided up into 3 sections and assigned a person. They will then create a list of 4 things that person is responsible for (president, parent, teacher). The teacher will have the students share the answers they came up with. The teacher will write the answers under the appropriate person on the white board. The teacher will then take some of the answers and ask the students how they think the person displays that responsibility to the rest of us. 2. The teacher will then assign each person a different responsibility that must be maintained throughout the classroom over the next week. They must complete the responsibility at the end of the lesson every day. The teacher will pull kids aside each day and have them not fulfill their responsibility. The students will realize the flow of life is disrupted when people dont do their responsibilities. 3. The teacher will assign each individual student a different responsibility. (mother, father, teacher, president, banker, principal, student, etc.) . The students will create a poster with a picture of their person doing a certain responsibility and will write 5 responsibilities that person might have. The poster boards need to be colorful and easy to comprehend.

Responsibilities Social Studies Lesson Plan Day 2 At the end of the lesson, teacher will call on a few volunteers to share their work.

Assessment: The teacher will assess by observing which responsibilities they put down in their groups. The teacher will collect the student-created posters. Reflection: Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The easiest part of this lesson will be explaining that different people have different responsibilities. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part will be explaining the cause and effect of someone not doing their responsibilities. Since it is a week-long experiment, it may be challenging for students to follow. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would continue to give them different responsibilities. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I would continue to do more hands-on examples, and if they still struggle, I would pull them aside for additional help. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I think the lesson will work as is. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was creating stuff for the students to do so that they could visibly see the cause and effects of not holding up your end of the bargain.
