A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan is designed to help 3rd grade students learn basic geographic skills. The students will build on their previous knowledge of cardinal directions, while adding the four intermediate directions: northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3rd grade Skill Level: At grade level Grouping: Whole class for discussion, individual for completing the compasses C. Materials: Blank paper, construction paper Scissors and glue Crayons or colored pencils Working compass White board and markers D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.3.1 Identify and use cardinal directions on a compass rose to locate places on a map.

Student-Friendly Standards I can identify and use cardinal directions on a compass rose to locate places on a map.

E. Procedure: 1. Review the compass rose and the four cardinal directions weve already learned. 2. Introduce to the students the four intermediate directions: northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest and where they belong on the compass rose. Have the students come up with a mnemonic device to help them remember the directions (i.e. Never Eat Soggy Waffles, or Never Eat Slimy Worms. 3. Students will now create a compass, including all eight directions, using the colored pencils or crayons, blank paper, and construction paper. Explain that a real compass faces north on its own, and that these compasses will need to be manually faced north. 4. Using the working compass, we will figure out, as a class, which way north, south, east, and west are and place appropriate signs on each wall of the classroom. Based on that, each student will tape his or her compass to his or her desk, making sure it is facing the correct direction (i.e. north on their compass will actually be facing north).

5. CLOSURE: Review with students the eight directions and discuss with them how they can be used in daily life. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will measure student understanding by checking the placement of the compass on their desks. I will also, better, measure student understanding by their completion of the next lessons warm-up activity, as well as the project. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. If students have correctly placed the compass, then they will have grasped the concept of the directions. I will also know by their accurate completion of the following lessons warm-up activity and project. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? Again, I think the entire lesson will be pretty easy to teach. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging might be explaining the difference between a compass (which moves) and their compasses which must be placed to face north manually. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will follow up this lesson with my next lesson plan that focuses more on maps. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who do not grasp the concepts, I will review the compass rose and directions prior to the next lesson. The next lesson focuses on creating a map which will, in itself, be a review. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? None. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? Trying to figure out if there was a better way to create a compass.
