Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and Kingsford Offer Barbecue Judging to the Public!

Kingsford Charcoal and Memphis in May International Festival officials announced today an offer that will allow greater access to judging of championship barbecue at the Festivals annual World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. The Kingsford Tour of Champions Judging offers non-trained judges an opportunity to judge world class competitive barbecue on-site with select teams and determine who goes home with bragging rights and $2500 in prize money for being the consumers favorite. Sixteen of the 250 teams competing in this years World Championship will participate in the Kingsford Tour of Champions contest and judging will occur on Thursday and Friday, May 16 and 17 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day. Interested patrons must pre-register to judge during those days. Pre-registration can be completed at www.memphisinmay.org/worldchampionshipbbqcontest. Registration packets will be picked up at the event. Event guests will pay a small fee to judge, and may register for multiple judging sessions. The patrons will judge one sample each from four select team spaces. The price for judging is $10.00 per session. Each sample will be chopped Boston Butt. Teams will be preparing the meat according to Memphis in May contest rules. Fayette Packing Company is supplying meat for the teams. Previously, on-site judging had been conducted only by judges who were certified according to Memphis in May barbecue rules. Jim Holt, President and CEO of Memphis in May commented: Over the years weve seen an increasing number of visitors to the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, many of whom are from out of town, and their chief comment was that they were not allowed to judge championship barbecue. Working with Kingsford weve been able to identify what we believe is the perfect answer. We feel that the thousands of guests coming to the event will agree. The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, May 16-18 in Tom Lee Park in downtown Memphis is a part of the month-long celebration including the Beale Street Music Festival May 3-5, International Week salute to Sweden, May 6 - 11 and the Sunset Symphony May 25. Memphis in May International Festival is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and celebrate Memphis culture, foster economic growth and enhance international awareness through education. In addition to the major public events of the organization, Memphis in May also produces a major international education component available to school children throughout the MidSouth from kindergarten through high school.
