that job. She would have to keep her imagination totally under
control to do that.
Right now, in fact, Sophie was searching for her next dream
character. With a new film project to do for Art Appreciation
class, she hoped one of the paintings would inspire her into a
daydream that would lead to a new lead character that would
shape a whole movie for Film Club to do . . .
Okay now thats what Im talkin about!
Sophie looked over at Vincent, who was three paintings
inside the door, bobbing his head and pointing like hed just
discovered a new vaccine. Like a flock of hens, the Corn Flakes
followed Sophie to see what hed found. Darbie and Kitty
stared, mouths gaping. Willoughby out-shrieked herself.
We cant do a movie about this, Maggie said. Her words,
as always, dropped out in thuds. Those people are naked.
Nathan turned purple.
Painters back then were all about the human body, Fiona
said. Dont get all appalled. Its just art.
I dont even know what appalled means but I think I am
that. Darbie shook her head at Vincent. Youre gone in the
head if you think were going to touch that idea.
Sophie suddenly felt squirmy. While the three boys wandered into the next exhibit room, Sophie put her arms out
to gather her Corn Flakes around her. You guys, she said,
were acting like the Pops and Loops, all freaking out over
naked people and talking about gross things being cool.
Were not doing it, Maggie said. The boys are.
They cant help it, Sophie said. Theyre just boys.
Willoughby gave a mini-shriek.
I know what youre gonna say, Soph, Fiona said. Even
if theyre being a little bit heinous, that doesnt mean we have
to be.
15

The Corn Pops wish they had Jimmy and those guys in
their group, Willoughby said. She looked a little startled,
curls springing out from under her headband. Sorry Corn
Flake Code I know were not supposed to try to make people
jealous and stuff.
Fiona sniffed. Were so beyond that.
Dont say anything else, Darbie said out of a small hole
she formed at the corner of her mouth. Here they come.
A group of four girls made such an entrance around the
corner, Sophie was sure the paintings were going to start
falling off the walls. Julia Cummings sailed in the lead with
her thick dark auburn hair swinging from side to side and
her glossy lips set in her usual I-smell-something-funnyand-I-think-its-you curl. Fiona always said she looked
disdainful.
She swept past the Corn Flakes with her three followers
trailing after her, all dressed in variations of the skin-tight
theme and curling their own lips as if theyd been studying
Julia by the hour. There was a time when they would have
stopped and made a remark about how lame and uncool each
of the Corn Flakes was, but Sophie knew they didnt dare. The
Corn Pops had been back in school for only a week since their
last serious detention.
It was a sure thing they werent going to take a chance with
Mr. DiLoretto on their heels. He strode in right behind them,
wearing his glasses with no rims and his curly grayish hair
pulled back in a ponytail.
Sophies high school sister, Lacie, had warned her about
Mr. DiLoretto when the seventh graders switched from Life
Skills to Art Appreciation for the new semester.
Hes a little weird, Lacie had said, and he gets mad when
people dont take art seriously.

Well, well.
Uh-oh, Sophie thought. Did she say the wrong thing? What
was it Lacie had said about him getting mad when people
didnt get art?
You have the beginnings of a good critical mind, Mr.
DiLoretto said.
Sophie let go of the hair she was still pulling under her
nose like a mustache. I do? she said.
You dont have an ounce of talent for drawing or painting,
but you show some promise as an art critic. He glanced at his
watch. Nine minutes til lunch.
Sophie didnt hear the rest of what he said. She was gazing again at the giant soup can and pawing through her large
canvas artsy-looking bag for her notebook and pen. Ah, there they
were, beneath the camera and the portable tape recorder and her
calendar full of appointments with people who wanted her expert
opinion on modern art.
So many demands on my time, Artista Picassa thought. But I
must make some notes on this piece because it fascinates me.
Very few people had her appreciation for the more bizarre
artists like Andy Warhol. It was her duty to educate people, which
was why she was an art critic. And possibly the most famous one
in all of Virginia, if not beyond
That was it, of course. Maggie could write it all down in
the Treasure Book later.
They would do their project on one of Andy Warhols
pieces.
She could play Artista Picassa, the famous art critic . . .
And maybe artists who were jealous because she didnt praise
their paintings would do something heinous . . .
Too bad they couldnt use Pops and Loops in their film.
Theyd be perfect as envious painters.

Sophie looked around for her group, but there was nobody
left in the exhibit room.
Rats! Sophie said to the soup can.
She dashed into the hall, but she didnt have a clue which
way to go, and the map of the museum was shoved into the
bottom of her backpack.
Wheres Maggie when you need her? she thought. Maggie
probably has the whole museum layout memorized by now.
But that was why Maggie was the clubs recorder and Sophie
was the director. Creative people needed organized people to
keep them from getting lost, Sophie decided.
The smell of food and the clattering of forks finally led
her in the right direction. Mr. DiLoretto was standing in the
doorway of Cuisine and Company, glaring at her from under
his tangled eyebrows.
I got caught up appreciating art, Sophie said.
He just pointed her inside. Fiona waved to her from a table
across the room.
Mr. DiLoretto wouldnt let us look for you, she said as
Sophie slid into a chair.
Tell her what we decided, Vincent said to Fiona.
Youre gonna love this, Soph, Jimmy said. His usually shy
smile was wide.
Sophie looked at Fiona. Decided about what?
The film, Fiona said. Jimmy found the perfect painting
for our project.
Something about the way Fiona didnt quite look back at Sophie
made Sophie feel squirmy. Slipping off her shoes, Sophie pushed
her toes between the close-together bars under the chair.
Maggie pushed a bowl of green soup toward her and
said, Eat.
It looks re what was that word? Willoughby said.

breathe again. By then, Darbie and Maggie, the final two, were
there. Maggie shook her head, splashing her Cuban-dark bob
against her cheeks.
You cant wear your shirt for a hat, she said, words
thudding out in their usual matter-of-fact blocks.
Maggie was the most somber of the group, but that was
just Maggie. Although the lip-curling Corn Pops called them
Flakes which was where their very-secret name Corn
Flakes came from Sophie and her friends let each other be
the unique selves they figured God made them to be.
Only at the moment, Sophie wasnt feeling unique. Just
weird.
Darbie hooked her straight reddish hair behind her ears.
Youre all in flitters, Sophie, she said.
Darbie still used her Irish expressions, even though she
had been in the U.S. for more than a year. Sophie loved that,
but she barely noticed now.
Her moms having her baby sister right this very minute,
Willoughby told Darbie, with a poodle-shriek. Our newest
little Corn Fl
Shhhh! Maggie said.
Willoughby slapped her hand over her own mouth, and
Sophie glanced down the row of lockers to make sure the
Corn Pops hadnt heard. It didnt look like it.
Nobody outside the group knew about the Corn Flake
name. Being a Corn Flake was a special thing, with a code
that was all about behaving the way God wanted them to. The
Corn Flakes had agreed a long time ago that they couldnt risk
Julia and her group finding out and twisting it all up.
Still, it was hard not to talk about it, especially when it
came to Sophies soon-to-be-born sister. They had plans for
making her the newest Corn Flake.

Sophie nodded, but she really did wish she was deep in
daydreams about a new and fabulous character for a Film Club
movie the Corn Flakes could make with the Lucky Charms.
That was the name the Flakes had secretly given to Vincent
and his two friends, partly because they werent absurd little
creeps like some boys they knew.
Is your mom okay? Jimmy Wythe said. His eyes, as blue
as a swimming pool, were soft.
But before Sophie could answer him, Coach Yates gave an
extra-obnoxious blast on the whistle that brought even the
Corn Pops out of their huddle.
Singletary! Coach Yates yelled. Nobody could holler like
Coach Yates. Are you looking for a detention your first day?
Get yourself down from there.
Sophie looked in the direction Coach Yates was yelling.
Her mouth dropped open.
Somebodys making a holy show of herself, Darbie said.
A girl with bright red hair was shimmying up one of the
volleyball poles. Even with Coach Yates still shouting, the girl
reached the top and looked down triumphantly at the entire
seventh-grade PE class.
Who is that? Julia said.
Beside her, Corn Pop Anne-Stuart gave the usual sniff.
Sophie wondered where all the stuff in Anne-Stuarts nose
could possibly come from.
Shed better get down, Maggie said. Shes gonna get in
so much trouble.
Is she mental? Darbie said.
Sophie was sure of it when Red-Haired Girl suddenly let
go of the pole and leaped to the gym floor. Her flight landed
in a roll that brought her right to Coach Yates feet. Vincent
clapped until Coach Yates shot him the Coach Hates look.
135

1/22/13 9:24 PM
She ordered them all to get into their teams for warm-up
and pulled Red-Haired Girl to her feet. Coach Nanini joined
them the big man Sophie thought of as Coach Virile. He
had muscles as big as hams and one large eyebrow that ridged
his eyes. He was the boys coach, but Sophie secretly called
him hers.
Sophie tried to hear what he was saying to Red-Haired Girl
in his high-pitched-for-a-man voice, but Coach Yates blasted
the whistle yet again and sent them all scurrying. The Charms
went to get a ball while the Corn Flakes gathered on their court.
What was that about? Fiona said.
Shell get double detention for it, Maggie said.
Fiona rolled her eyes. Thats, like, something my little
brother would do.
Sos that, Darbie said, nodding toward Coach Nanini and
Red-Haired Girl. The girl was rolling the front of her T-shirt
onto her arms so that her bare belly showed. Somebody on
another team yelled, Woo-hoo! Probably one of the Fruit
Loops, Sophie thought. They were the boys famous for such
talents as burping the alphabet, booby-trapping toilets, and
far worse.
She acts like shes in about fourth grade, Willoughby said.
With an eyebrow raised, Sophie looked around the circle.
Oops, Darbie said. Were breaking the Code, arent we?
Maggie gave a solemn nod, and Sophie knew she was about
to list the entire Corn Flake Code for them.
Never put anybody down even though they do it to you,
she said as if she were reading it. Dont fight back or give in to
bullies; just take back the power to be yourself. Talk to Jesus
about everything, because he gives you the power to be who
he made you to be. Corn Flakes are always loyal to each other.

1/22/13 9:24 PM
Yeah, Fiona said, staring after her, why dont you just do
that little thing?
This, Sophie decided, was going to be a real test of their
ability to uphold the Code.
Before all the Flakes and Charms could get into position,
Brooke smacked the ball and sent it sailing just over the net.
Colton Messik, a Fruit Loop, turned in time to smack it back
over. Maggie jumped toward the ball, hands in perfect position to set it up, but a blaze of red was suddenly there. Brookes
head collided dead-on with Maggies, and Maggie staggered
backward. Jimmy stepped in and caught her.
The court burst into a chaos of shouts.
You should have let her set it up
Youre supposed to play your position
Are you gone in the head, girl?
You can let go of me now!
That last shout came from Maggie, who squirmed away
from Jimmy and glowered at Brooke. Thats not the right way
to play, she said.
I dont know, Tod Ravelli called from the other side of the
net. I thought it was slammin!
Colton and Tod did an instant replay of Brooke ramming
into Maggie, and Julia exchanged lip-curled smiles with AnneStuart and Cassie.
You okay, Mags? Willoughby said.
While she and Kitty examined Maggies forehead, Sophie
watched Brooke. She tossed the ball in the air and stumbled
after it, this time falling into Nathan, who went past red and
into the purple color family.
I think this might be beyond the Corn Flake Code, Fiona
muttered to Sophie.
Sophie turned to Darbie, who was shoving her hair behind
her ears, over and over.

I think she needs some Round Table help, Sophie said to her.
Darbie directed her bird-bright dark eyes down at Sophie.
Thats easy for you to say, since youre not on it, and I am.
Im a consultant, Sophie said, lifting her chin. And I
think I should consult with Coach Nanini.
Darbie sighed. Youre always so good, Sophie. Id rather
toss her out by her drawers and be done with it.
But Darbie followed Sophie to Coach Nanini, who was one
of the Round Table advisers. Round Table was a council of faculty members and students who tried to help kids that couldnt
seem to follow the school rules. Coach and the other teachers
thought most kids acted out because something was bothering them, and instead of just being punished, they should be
helped. Sophie had been on Round Table for the first half of the
year until a new council came on, but Coach and Mrs. Clayton,
the other adviser, had asked Sophie to be a consultant.
Its Little Bit and the Lass, Coach Nanini said when they
reached him. Those are some serious faces.
Thats because we have a serious problem, Darbie said.
Coach Nanini folded his big arms and said, Okay, lets
hear it.
Sophie filled him in, while Darbie punctuated with little
grunts. When she was finished, Coach Nanini peered beneath
his hooded brows in the direction of Team Ones court. The
ball was just sailing from Tod Ravelli straight to Brooke who
had her back to him as she gawked at Kitty on the sideline
waiting to rotate in.
Heads up, Brooke! Fiona shouted.
But the ball hit Brooke in the back of the head and bounced
away. Hey! she said. What jerk threw that at me?
Coach Yates blasted the whistle, and Coach Nanini nodded
his shaved head. She looks like Round Table material to me.
Ill talk to her after class.
