Artistic Director from 1998 to 2007, Paula Danckert increased artistic stability by instituting the permanent position of Dramaturg-in-Residence, a position filled by Peter Hinton, Emma Tibaldo and Greg MacArthur. In 2006, with support from Briony Glassco, Paula Danckert established the Tadoussac Playwrights Residence, which has recently been renamed The Glassco Playwrights Residence in Tadoussac in honour of its late founder, Bill Glassco. Tibaldo was appointed in September 2007 and is the current Artistic and Executive Director of the organization. HISTORY OF PWM
In
50 years the world of English Canadian theatre has evolved dramatically. We now have a rich and increasingly diverse pool of professional playwrights. As one of the original new play development centres, part of our initial work was creating the very idea of the professional playwright. The scarcity of Canadian drama in the 1960s led to the formation of the first still-existent English language organization in Canada, solely devoted to the development of the Canadian play and playwright outside a producing theatre context: Playwrights Workshop Montral (PWM). workshops by volunteers and colleagues. In the seventies, under the Artistic leadership of Roy Higgins, Playwrights Workshop Montral attempted to become a landlord and production house by purchasing a building in Old Montreal.

the hiring of Bob White, the first Dramaturg Artistic Director in 1975, Playwrights Workshop Montral solidified its present mandate. Bob White quickly expanded the developmental and dramaturgical focus of the organization, recognizing the need to develop scripts at a distance from the pressures of production. Per Brask and Brian Richmond followed suit, expanding the organizations reach from coast to coast. In 1981 under the artistic direction of Rina Fraticelli translation became a component of PWMs programming. A program named Transmissions was introduced, with a mandate to translate a Quebecois play into English and an English Canadian play into French. This was done in conjunction with the CEAD. Michael
