CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs and computer monitors have made an imposing presence for a very long time. Today the domination of CRTs is over with the arrival of LCD, Plasma, DLP and LED screens & monitors. These advances in screens/monitors technology are changing the human experience & businesses like never before. Let us begin the comparison between LCD, LED & OLED screens/monitors with an explanation of fundamental differences. 1) Basic Difference: Unlike CRT monitors that generate their own light through cathode ray incidence on fluorescent materials, both LCD & LED displays rely on external lighting as their display is created through manipulation of light passing through polarized liquid crystals. LED and LCD monitors are based on the same basic technology for image display but differ in the kind of backlighting used. Both LCD & LED monitors/displays have two layers of glass which are polarized and stuck together. The liquid crystals are held in one of the layers. These liquid crystals pass, or block the light, to produce images on the screen when the electric current passes through it, effectively acting as optical switches. However, the crystals do not produce their own light. While LCD monitors use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) for backlighting, LED monitors use light emitting diodes (LED). This is the main difference between the two display technologies. OLED screens delivery an image to the screen in a very different way to that of an LCD or LED screen. An organic light emitting diode (OLED) is a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compounds which emit (red, green and blue) ldight in response to an electric current. This layer of organic semiconductor material is situated between two electrodes. The crystals used in LCD & LED screen do not produce the light by itself; lighting is derived from an external light source at the back of the screen, on the other hand OLEDs generate their own light, and so OLED displays do not require external backlighting; which means OLED screens can be made thinner and lighter. 2) Contrast and Black Levels:- Standard LCD screens have a backlight which is constantly on during use. Dark areas are created by "turning" the light away from the LCD panel, resulting in a low contrast level and poor clarity in dark scenes. With LED screens the light emitting diodes are dimmed locally to create deeper blacks in specific areas of the screen, which can also allow for better detail in dark scenes. LED screen offers better dynamic contrast ratio. In line with LED screens, OLED screens produce the light on demand thus giving very high contrast ratio even compared with LED screens. Both LED & OLED screen give true black which LCD cant offer. 3) Power consumption:- In inactive mode LCDs filter the light emitted from a backlight, allowing a small fraction of light through (cannot show true black) thus consume power when inactive, contrary to that an inactive OLED element does not produce light or consume power. OLED screen gives rich picture quality & require a lot less power (generally 20-30% lower power consumption) to operate than LCD screens.

4) Viewing Angle: - OLED screen offers wider off-axis viewing angle compared to LCDs because OLED pixels directly emit light. OLED pixel colours appear correct and unshifted, even as the viewing angle approaches 90 from normal i.e. (almost 1700 wide angle of viewing). 5) Response time: - OLEDs have a faster response time than standard LCD screens. Whereas LCD displays are capable of between 2 and 8 ms response time offering a frame rate of +/-200 Hz, an OLED can theoretically have less than 0.01 ms response time enabling 100,000 Hz refresh rates. 6) Eco friendly: - OLED screens are a lot more eco-friendly because mercury is not used in their production. Being organic polymer OLEDs can be recycled far more easily compared to LCD screens. 7) Lower cost base: - OLEDs can be manufactured using a simple continuous method at low temperature, rather than the batch processing in high temperature clean-room conditions necessary for LCDs. This means that a far lower cost base is attainable for OLEDs in volume production, compared to LCD and plasma FPDs.

OLED: The principle of OLED technology is that when current flows between a cathode and an
anode, an emissive layer of organic molecules (e.g. polyaniline, green in diagram) sandwiched between these electrodes can become illuminated (electroluminescence). For this to happen efficiently, a layer known as the conductive layer (orange in diagram), made up of organic plastic molecules such as polyfluorene, lies between the emissive layer and the anode. The anode is positively charged and therefore draws electrons from the conductive layer, leaving the conductive layer with a positive charge that draws electrons from the emissive layer. Light is emitted as a by-product, in a process known as electro-phosphorescence. The OLED process is explained in the diagram below:

The OLED layers described above total a thickness of around 100-500 nanometres, which is around 100 times thinner than human hair. This makes them extremely fragile and hence they must be supported by an additional substrate layer. This substrate is usually clear plastic, foil or glass of varying thickness, and must be transparent, like the anode, so that the emitted light can be seen on the OLED monitor screen. The layering of an OLED cell can be seen below:

The colour of light emitted from the emissive layer of an OLED monitor depends on the exact organic makeup of the molecules within. As with LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors, OLED units are made up of pixels of different colours; i.e. various organic molecules make up pixels within the emissive layer which will emit light of different colours once illuminated. The brightness (light intensity) of an OLED monitor is proportional to the current applied to the cell.

Unique Password protection of release settings

In conventional protection & control releases the technician configures s the release as per the system requirement for O/L, S/C & E/F (current pick-up up thresholds threshold & time-delays) protection with the Binary coded decimal (BCD) switches. In the BCD CD based protection & control releases, an un-authorised authorised person can change the protection parameters of the release which may lead to partial or complete loss of system co co-ordination. (Protection Protection release may trip incorrectly due to a fault outside of the protection zone zone, , or there may be unintentional early or delayed tripping of the release. release.) Password protected release setting is one of the unique features of the Matrix releases. release In Matrix releases one can configure the release for basic protections e.g. O/L, S/C & E/F & Instantaneous (or can configure the advance protection features such as Over/under-voltage, Over/under Reverse power, Directional short short-circuit etc.) with the help of Configuration (Navigation) (Navigation keys & OLED display. Once the protection setting settings have been done as per the system requirements, requirements the password protection feature of the release doesnt allow the un-authorised authorised person to change the release protection parameters settings.

ZigBee wireless communication

Our innovative Matrix releases are designed to let consultants & system designers help their

Zigbee modules can be used for monitoring parameters of Matrix releases & its supplementary modules like Relay, ZSI, E/F etc. Monitoring parameters include:1) Metering Data - Voltage, Current, Power, Energy, Power Factor, Online Module Status. 2) Status Data - Alarm & Trip Status, Digital Input Output Module & Relay Module Status. 3) Record Data - Trip Records, Event Records, Maintenance Records.

Lets first see whats the ZigBee a catchy name for sure, is all about & who needs it? We already have Bluetooth- and Wi-Fi enabled devices, and Wi-MAX and Wireless USB proliferation are at the doorstep. Who needs another wireless standard? First, lets understand that each wireless technology that makes it to market serves a special purpose or function. Bluetooth and wireless USB provide short-range connectivity in what is called a personal-area network (PAN). Bluetooth serves a short-range, moderate-speed, wire replacer, and wireless USB provides short-range, high-speed device connectivity. Wi-Fi is for local-area networks (LANs) and WiMAX is designed to provide wide-area networking (WAN) or metropolitan-area networking (MAN). ZigBee fills yet another niche. It is a PAN technology based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Unlike Bluetooth or wireless USB devices, ZigBee devices have the ability to form a mesh network between nodes. Meshing is a type of daisy chaining from one device to another. This technique allows the short range of an individual node to be expanded and multiplied, covering a much larger area.

Page 9

One of the primary benefits of mesh architecture is that if an intermediary device fails, is offline, or is busy, the message can still get through via an alternative path. Mesh networks look for the most efficient path available and will automatically re-route messages to avoid any failures. This is why mesh networks are often referred to as selfhealing: the network automatically works around problems that it encounters. Mesh networks also provide self-configuration, in that when a new device is added (or an existing device is moved) the network automatically works out what type of device it is (e.g. router or end device), where its neighbours are, and determines the best path through the network. After devices are configured, they regularly poll their neighbours to collect information about signal strength and possible errors, so that they can recalculate transmission routes if required. There are three categories of ZigBee devices:

ZigBee Network Coordinator. Smart node that automatically initiates the formation of the network. ZigBee Router. Another smart node that links groups together and provides multi-hoping for messages. It associates with other routers and end-devices. ZigBee End Devices. Where the rubber hits the roadsensors, actuators, monitors, switches, dimmers and other controllers.

One ZigBee network can contain more than 65,000 nodes (active devices). The network they form in cooperation with each other may take the shape of a star, a branching tree or a net (mesh). Whats more, each device can operate for years off of a AA cell. That means that each node uses little power. If one is looking for wireless monitoring and remote control solutions, ZigBee may be the answer. Those are the functions for which ZigBee was designed. ZigBee nodes can be used to tie an entire home, office or factory together for safety, security and control. In short ZigBee networks provide smart, low-cost, low-power, low-maintenance monitoring and control systems.

Zigbee V/s Bluetooth

Zigbee and Bluetooth have lots in common, like both operating in the same frequency
band of 2.4 GHz and belonging to the same wireless private area network (IEEE 802.15). But even if this is the case, they are not exactly competing technologies. Also, there is a multitude of differences between the two wireless technologies for personal area networks both in termas of application and technical base. Whereas Bluetooth is geared towards user mobility and eliminating cabling between short-distanced devices, Zigbee is more oriented towards remote control and automation. Bluetooth aims at doing away with the cabling between devices that are in close proximity with each other for example between mobile phone and a laptop or desktop or a printer and a PC. Users with Bluetooth supported handsets are able to effortlessly exchange documents, calendar appointments and other files. Zigbee supports protocols for defining a type of sensor network that controls applications used in residential, commercial & industrial settings. It harmonizes the application software layers specified by the ZigBee alliance and the IEEE 802.15 that defines the physical and MAC protocol layers.
